These were built in farm country . No nonsense machines. Straight and to the point. Always loved the understated beauty of these center dial washers. Maytag didn't need hype or "Heavy Duty" stamped on their panels to sell their machines . People knew what they were getting with these machines.

I have a 1987 Model which is very similar to this except they changed the button layout. I bought it with the dryer for $100, 3 years ago. I haven't had any problems and haven't even had to replace the belts yet. The guy I bought them from said they were left by the previous owner and he didn't want these old machines, he wanted new "advanced" front loaders. I bet he's already had them break down on him. Should have stuck with the classic!
@spencerwilton5831
@spencerwilton5831 4 жыл бұрын
Smitastic You do realise that in Europe we have been exclusively using front loaders since the seventies? America thinks they are "advanced" we just think they are normal. They are certainly much better than top loaders, they wash better, use less water, use less power, less detergent, spin faster, damage clothes less. Why anyone still uses top loaders other than for historical interest is beyond us!
@smitastic7030
@smitastic7030 4 жыл бұрын
@@spencerwilton5831 They don't clean better than a conventional top loader. You forgot to add, cost more are less reliable and are far more expensive to repair. I'll keep my 1987 Maytag for another 30 years, you'll be on your fifth front loader by then. It's not more environmentally friendly to keep manufacturing new machines when could have used the one same reliable machine for years. My parents have only had 2 Maytag top loaders since they got married in 1968, and the first one they left in the house they moved from.
@ENB2002
@ENB2002 4 жыл бұрын
@@spencerwilton5831 Well, the thing is front loaders are more expensive up front than top loaders, and when built correctly, a top-loading washer can clean clothes much better and faster than any front-loading washer can. I wasn't kidding in my original comment when I said a Maytag could realistically run decades. My great aunt had a Maytag Dependable Care in her condo, and in the 20 years she lived there it never had to be repaired once. She also used to have a Maytag more like the one shown in the video that was from the 1960s and, despite having a hole in the tub, still worked perfectly when she gave it away in the 1990s. Also, my Whirlpool Direct Drive has had only two things have fail on it since my family purchased it in 1997: the motor coupler (a $25 part) and the agitator dogs (a $5 part). In 23 years of owning that machine, we have spent $30 replacement parts, and it has outlived two dryers. No front loader will ever manage to do that. Remember, it doesn't matter the savings in the reduced water, electricity, and detergent usage if you have to spend all those savings repairing or replacing the machine every few years. Also, in my experiences, top load washers don't damage clothes at all unless you severely overload the machine. One reason I think front loaders are less popular in the United States is because in the 2000s, there were several class action lawsuits against various front load washing machine manufacturers here such as Electrolux, LG, and Whirlpool claiming that their machines didn't wash away soap residue well enough, and that resulted in mold and mildew buildup in the machine that ruined clothes. Those lawsuits covered about 9 million front load washers and left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths regarding front loaders in the United States, which resulted in the market shifting back towards top loaders.

My son found this vid & sent it to me. I STILL have this very Maytag. One small thing went wrong a lonnnnng time ago. The repair man came out, fixed it and said, “These machines are workhorses. Never get rid of it.” I lived in a Cleveland suburb (2 1/2 years), and in the Fall of 1977 we bought this machine. It moved from Ohio to Southern California, been three homes, and this Maytag washing machine, & it’s companion dryer, are still going strong. These babies are almost 43 years old, and they work & look better than I do. Thanks for this vid. You made an old broad very happy to see her “babies” on the internet!

I myself would pay $3000 for a vintage washer/dryer set for many reasons. I was just talking to my friend and I told him I miss the days when we had Sears and other appliance stores where you could buy quality appliances cause to me they were commercial grade anytime they last for years on in. I always encourage my friends and family that have old washers and dryers to at least keep them in storage if they are not working and one day have them restored. I wish I still had my grandma’s harvest gold Hotpoint washer and dryer set I would most definitely have it restored. Thank you again for all your videos because a washer fanatic as myself have memories of the washers and dryers. Just listening to them wash, spin, and one of our other you tube family members say the buzz click clunk is just so soothing. Thank you again and be safe.

Antonio Carter You could just buy Miele, and not have to worry about breakdowns for years, and even then parts will be available unlike forty year old machines. Plus a Miele will wash better, using less water and less power than any antiquated top loader.

This is one of my favorite washers ever! We had a newer version of this in harvest gold worked perfectly up until I decided to change it. grandcarriage1 Yes I absolutely do regret it I should’ve kept it if I only had the storage space I had bought a direct drive GE before the Hydro waves it’s still downstairs my cousin is using it. I rather would’ve had the Maytag. I’m sure with a belt replacement or a minor repair it would’ve still been here.

I grew up with this same machine, but in white, looked slightly larger though, and the one my parents had (from 1976 - 2009) had 5 cycles (Gentle-Delicate/Handwash, Soak'n'Wash, Pre-soak(and drain), Normal Wash, Permanent Press) and 3 more button sections (No Drain/Normal Drain, Save Suds/Return Suds, Regular Rinse/Extended Rinse and Spin/Long Spin), and there was a toggle switch for the end of cycle signal buzzer on/off on the right outside of the top console. Best machine I have ever used.

Enjoyed the vid. I watched the restoration vid earlier, 👍🏻excellent. My grandmother purchased the base model of this generation Matag washer back in 76. I still have the owners manual w/her receipt. Hers wasn’t cheap for a base model (A107). It ran long after she had passed. It was because of her washer with its reliability that I purchased my Maytag set new in 1997. Got the flagship set just below the first generation Neptune. Still running strong. There was an intermittent leak with my grandma’s machine I couldn’t pinpoint, but after watching the resto vid, I believe it was the tub clamp up top. Never checked that but remember seeing streaks from there. Sibling threw it away before I could get to it. That machine you just restored👍🏻 is going to last a very long time. Enjoyed the vid, great content, thanks for sharing it.

I used to have 30 A21s at my coin laundry. I rebuilt most of them. I had to rebuild because a customer got oil on her clothes (60 dollar payment to her). Agitator seal breaks down after several years and hot water gets into the transmission, forcing out the oil into the tub. This was after 13 years of continuous service (about 4 loads a day).

I truly hate about the way some people whinge and whine about Maytag's slow agitation and spin. I have a 1973 HA-806 I bought from a guy and asked him "Why on earth would you want to get rid of such a meticulously maintained machine ?" He told me his wife wanted something new. About a month later he emailed me and asked if he could buy the machine back because his wife hated her new one. That was 6 years ago and I love my Tag. As with any machine, if you do not overload it, you'll have great results. Providing you use Hot/Warm water for the wash and good Powdered detergent. (My choice is Persil Universal Powder) I have a Miele front load 4842... another model that was bashed, and it does a great job. The 806 has the most selections of combinations of Temps, Agitation and Spin. What other machine ca you program a Cold Wash and warm rinse ??? Not that I would ever use that combo, but you can do it with a 806. Beautiful Restoration as always Eugene. You are very Meticulous an a Talented man. Anyone that restores vintage appliances and work on any Mercedes Benz earns a Nobel by my standards. My best and healthy wishes to You, Your family, and everyone.

I wish they made them like this now. We have a newer Maytag and I hate the HE water efficiency function. You can't just set it and walk away.....you have to wait and see how much water goes in. 9 times out of 10 not enough water goes in and I have to manually put water into the basin. I think the agitator on the newer model seems backwards. I think it should go big to small to the top but it's opposite. These older machines lasted longer too....cause the majority of the parts were metal. Thanks for posting this CLASSIC!!!!!!!

Wow. You see that little bit of water coming out from the top as it is spinning at 13:32.... It is almost like they had turbo shot way back then (the turbo shot function LG uses in their new machines). Crazy. Even the rinse thing at 15:30. Just like the spray nozzle LG uses on their washing machines now that spray a fine jet of water to rinse better. The clean water then gets pulled through the clothes as it spins to rinse it out better before the actual rinse. Amazing the concepts used back then is still used today although in a slightly different manner. Ahead of its time this.

One other question... older machines (especially 1960's models) had exterior lights near the knobs or across the front panels. Was there a switch to turn the lights on or did they just work when the timer was active? How did they work?

We had the 1960s model when was growing up. I loved the dash light! It was activated by a little button on the dash. I believe one button for on and one for off. I currently have a 1984 A712, running strong, no repairs ! I will probably never get rid of it... too afraid of today's expensive unreliable junk. P.S. You can see the buttons for the dash light on this video. They are on the left side of the controls. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ip6lpZ2sjtp0nas

The late model 141, 142, and A700 washers used a switch on the left side of the console that would turn the console light on and off independent of the timer. The 160, 702, 806, 900, 902, and 906 washers routed the console light through the timer.

Clearly the machine is doing it's job. If you own an 806 you can wash anything! However, the user does not have a grasp of how to properly launder work items with this degree of soil or the rinse water would have been clear, not dirty. Making sure the machine is not overloaded is very important for good cleaning and rinsing and as we can see the clothes in this vid are rolling-over very well. There is a reason for "pre-washing" and many machines of this vintage have cycles for it. With heavily soiled and greasy/oily work clothes they should always be spot treated and pre-washed with detergent AND ammonia (to cut the grease!). Then, when proceeding to wash, plenty of fresh detergent (more ammonia depending on grease/oil levels) and HOT wash water. With white clothing it is important to use "regular" Clorox liquid bleach in the last four minutes of the wash cycle. Clorox liquid bleach is the only liquid bleach marketed here in the US that has the ph adjusted for the water in the area in which it is sold. There is a science to properly laundering clothes and if one follows the science your clothes will be very clean.

Hello! I have a question. I have the same washer and it’s been stopping during cycles. Recently it only runs for a few seconds and shuts off. Is there anything I could do to fix it?
@muziklvr7776
@muziklvr7776 Жыл бұрын
Did you fix it? Could be the motor overheating or the timer motor/timer assembly is dying.

Why do/did a lot of Maytags spin immediately when first draining? I always found that disconcerting as I would think it puts a lot of stress on the linkage....rather than just running the pump for the first minute or 2?
@grandcarriage1

Ram14250 lots of machines have that, vs a neutral drain (like you mention). My theory is that it goes back to the solid tub days when the only holes were at the top of the tub, and the machine used centripetal force to throw the water out those holes
@solarflea4115

Ram14250 These have a spin drain because they don’t have an individual pump motor. There’s only 1 motor to control everything. When the motor is spinning one way, the transmission engages and the washer agitates. The pump is spinning the opposite direction needed for draining. When the motor reverses direction, the transmission locks up and spins both the tub and agitator together at full speed. The pump is now spinning the other direction, sucking the water out the tub and pushing it through the drain pipe. The motor needs to be running in order for the pump to work. Therefore, a neutral drain isn’t possible with this design. I honestly prefer spin drain to neutral drain. Less parts and electronics to go wrong, and they more evenly distribute the clothes along the height of the tub, allowing for a more efficient spin.

@@solarflea4115 The center of gravity is lower in a neutral drain washer and therefore will or should spin better. Spin drain machines can go off balance if there is too much water and to little clothes in the basket .

@@solarflea4115 My Speed Queen spin drains and I agree. Never once in 7 years has it gone out of balance and banged against the cabinet . Steadiest machine next to our old Westinghouse. Our old Norge was pretty good also. Though the spin on the Norge would slow down with an out of balance load
