Elrond Half-elven is a renowned lore-mater, advisor and leader within Tolkien's works. His deeds served the Free Peoples in many ways, and he rightfully earned his place among other legends in Valinor. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts about Elrond in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

Hey everyone, I just wanted to amend a mistake. At 9:25, I should clarify that Gandalf never mentioned Bilbo’s ring, but his suspicions about the Hobbit’s ring at that time were quieted by Saruman’s belief that the One Ring was lost at sea (although Saruman just wanted to search the Vales of Anduin without the interference of Sauron or suspicions of the Council). Thanks everyone!

Another of Elrond's strengths is that he can acknowledge his own limits, and is willing to yield to the counsel of others. He recognizes that Frodo, unlikely as it seems, is the best choice as Ring-bearer, and that hobbits in general have strength of both endurance and character that make them a people of worth. He never condescends to them, not even Sam. He also follows Gandalf's advice and allows Merry and Pippin to join the Fellowship, despite his misgivings. And in the end, he acknowledges Aragorn's accomplishments and consents to him marrying Arwen, despite the personal cost.

This character had more than his share of sorrow! His grew up without BOTH of his parents. He was adopted by 2 brothers that killed his people. With one of the brothers at times ambivalent with their care. He and his brother were given a ridiculously heavy choice that could decide the future of he and others. (I couldn't imagine making this choice.)He went to war and he witnessed the death of his friend and king. His wife was brutally beaten and raped by orcs. He suffered from not being able to heal her wounds and her departure from Arda. He was lied to by Saruman who he confided in many years. Housing Aragorn probably reminded him of his lost brother whom he would never see again. Living with the knowledge that Aragorn may influence Arwen to become mortal. He had to come to grips with Arwen's choice to be mortal and live separated from him. His "only" daughter. And to wait and hope that his twin sons would not follow suit. This character went through h*ll! So happy, to a tribute vid of him. Great job!

rashida7777 That is one of the pitfalls of immortality, or, for that matter, living a long life. The loss of loved ones, family, and friends. But he and his brother are not eternally separated. They, and those elves who have died, will all be reunited at the ending of that world.
@shorebreakers96
@shorebreakers96 6 жыл бұрын
John Cronin I would say that it's even heavier for Elrond, as many of his losses were others immortals, so there is much "lost potential" in a way. With mortals, even if the death may be sad, it is unevitable, the time is ocunted. With elves, it's harder, as each and every one who fall to harsh death could have been someone important or a great friend for many more centuries.
@brianmessemer2973
@brianmessemer2973 6 жыл бұрын
Elliot, you make a really great point. It has me thinking now about how when an elf dies in battle, or dies needlessly, there is so much potentiality that is lost, because that elf could have become or done something very important indeed in 100, 500, 1000, or even thousands of years in the future. It's something we mortals of 100 years or so at best don't have to consider and it is daunting to think about! If Elrond and his brother were not shown hospitality and raised up to Elven adulthood but rather were slain as the children of the enemy, the entire fate of Middle Earth would have been completely different. Neither Rivendell nor even Numenor would have come to be the way they did. It tempts the question, are Elven lives "more valuable" than mortal lives because they are not mortal? I guess I'll stop there.
@jimmyboy131

If I remember correctly, even Elladan and Elrohir, both chose to be counted among mankind, not the elves. So , like their sister Arwen, they eventually died a natural death, just like any other human. So Elrond's choice of immortality was a very costly one. in that sense.

Technically he is a full elf, as him and his brother were given the choice to live as either man or elf, but not both. Clearly Elrond chose to live as one of the Eldar, a Noldor elf, and his brother chose to live as a man, and went on to become the first king of Numenor, starting the lineage that Aragorn belongs to.

@@rowineveloso4832 yes. Although the Elven blood helped the line of Numenorean kings in the shape of longevity. Aragorn was still in his prime at the age of 83 at the time of the Fellowship and he ruled until he was 200. He is not quick to judge, but always swift to lend a friendly hand, even to the dwarves. I'm so glad you made this video. Mainly because the fact that he was half-elven before he even made the choice to be an elf forever really confused me. Gosh Elrond is one of my favourite characters from the entire legendarium. His story is one of the saddest. At a young age he lost his parents, then soon after his “adopted parents”(Maglor and Maedhros), then his brother who decided to be human... then there was peace for a time and he met his wife and had 3 children and then his friend Gil Galad was killed(likely in front of him too), his wife was tortured and had to sail, then ultimately his daughter also chose the fate of men... can this guy catch a break? XD and yet he is still one of the wisest and nicest men in all of Middle Earth and has not given up hope! Thanks for doing those videos, this is one of my favourites. Keep up the awesome work!

He has closer bond with men than most, especially line of Numenor kings (Seeing his brother was first king of greatest human civilization). So his his disappointment with failures of that line and humans makes sense. But even while being disappointed he was most active in affairs of men and middle earth than rest of the elves.

He lost his wife to Orc violation, almost lost his sons to the anger and despair of what happened to Celebrian and in the end he loses his daughter to his foster son whom he deeply loved as well. Elrond gives so much to Middle Earth and loses so much in the process. I find him admirable in his ability to give and work towards good when he knows it will benefit others and only take from him. He is the definition of the one who works towards the Long Defeat. Thank you for the video.

8:38 Elrond sent Arwen out of Rivendell to live with Galadriel in Lothlorien while Aragorn was still a child growing up in Rivendell precisely because, had they grown up together in close proximity all the time, they would only have a brother and sisterly platonic love towards each other and would not be capable of feeling romantic love for each other after coming of age. I can't remember what this is called in behavioral biology but basically if you grow up with a member of the opposite sex since childhood your brain/body categorizes that person as a family relation and this prevents you from developing romantic feelings for that person when you both come of age. I would suggest this is clear evidence of Elrond's plan to set Aragorn up with Arwen. Perhaps, besides being extremely wise and perceptive, Elrond's ring granted him the foresight to convince him to take this action. I'm sure he missed Arwen while she was gone but he did it with the greater good for all of Middle Earth in mind. What an incredible being Elrond is!
@tiaaaron3278
@tiaaaron3278 4 жыл бұрын
This is false. After what happened to her mother, Arwen was a frequent visitor Lótien because her grandmother comforted her. Elrond didn't expect a love between Aragorn and Arwen. They were betrothed without even asking for his permission. And Elrond was "grieved". He had already told Aragorn Arwen "is of greater lineage than yours" so he banned their marriage. Elrond told Aragorn to either become king or never have Arwen. Elrond deliberately got in the way of a betrothed couple. That is not only a terrible thing to do but also completely against Elvish costume. Elves marry freely and for love.

When I first read LOTR, a millennia ago 😄, I was initially taken by the idea that Elrond was haughty and overbearing with Aragorn, setting him a seemingly-unlikely task in order to win the hand of his daughter. But, after you realise the character's full backstory, you'll understand WHY this is so. Elrond SEES the potential in Aragorn, and in his ascendancy to King, Elrond is also honouring the memory of his brother, and restoring his lineage. Videos like this help demonstrate this better, top work sir! 😉
@blitva1
@blitva1 3 жыл бұрын
Ooooh, you think elrond had a premonition about aragorn succeeding to become the high king and set him on this path. So he wasn't setting him up to fail as aragorn probably thought, but to succeed, as elrond already knew he could do it if he worked at it. That's some galaxy brain parenting right there lol
@divinefallfromgrace
@divinefallfromgrace 3 жыл бұрын
@@blitva1 I'm not 100% on Elrond having a 'vision' of Aragorn succeeding; we do know, like a lot of senior Eldar, that he DOES have premonitions, but the only one mentioned regards Arwen's fate. I've just come to realise that, by reading the material outside of LOTR, Elrond is no mere overbearing, demanding Father-In-Law, lol. Having known him since he was a child, Elrond sees Aragorn's nature, and realises he'd be an outstanding ruler, and wants him to realise his potential. Like you said dudo, he is one of the sharpest knives in the drawer alright! 😉

The amazing thing with Tolkien created his world by his lonesome, where as the likes of Star Wars has had teams of various writers to fill in backstories and make up lore, and to continue the film series. One man. I think that has to contribute to the greatness of Tolkien. 400KrispyKremes no, they were made with the light of the two trees that we're destroyed by Morgoth and Ungoliant. Which were unhealable and that was the only thing left of their light from the eldar days, save the one flower and something else did one bear before completely dying even after the goddess tried to heal them. This is what makes them SO special. There is a whole epic storyline behind these three jewels and the man and his house who created them. Do give it a read when you are able. It's well worth it!

I will. Tolkien wrote the best stories. Only one other story was as epic as his own, and it was put to film. It was called "The Gods Must Be Crazy". In many ways it is very similar to the Lord Of the Rings, although it was far funnier, and had a much more anti-climatic ending.
@400KrispyKremes
@400KrispyKremes 6 жыл бұрын
I will go further now with me previous comparison, and suggest that the creator of this channel explore it in a future video because it is important. Please do this. The Film "The Gods Must Be Crazy" is the first actual time that The Lord Of the Rings was put to film. In that film a place of truly peaceful people who live of the land, and love all things that grow are besieged by a truly evil item, and a hero arise's from their place to destroy this item by throwing it off the edge of the World. The rest of the World is embroiled in a massive war that threatens all the civilized nations of "The World". Somehow throughout all of this the tiny man (in the eyes of all other men, like Hobbits) walks this path to the end and destroys the most evil item in the World. The comparisons are identical, aside from the fact that Xi can destroy the evil item of his own will.

Very nice! Very thoughtful... and most of all: very densely packed with information! Great job making this video :) You presented the material very well and efficiently and layered it with beautiful images from many sources, you even managed to underlay a musical soundtrack⸺a feat nearly always failed by most who attempt it. But not only did you make appropriate selections of music which complimented and enhanced the other content, its volume remained pleasant and well balanced throughout. For someone like myself with minimal knowledge of this amazing, rich and intricately detailed fictional world, you did well to explain just enough crucial elements so that I could follow along despite a great deal (which was obviously not feasible to explain) going over my head only to be appreciated by those who have invested far more time into learning of this world. The ease and precision with which you speak all the names and words of from Tolkien's world is impressive for they are often riddled with combinations of sounds in an order unfamiliar to English and somewhat tongue twisting to even hear. And further more you do so with great velocity which leads me to the almost inescapable conclusion that you have much practice and experience and that you probably even familiarized yourself with language and script developed by Tolkien. As one fascinated and intrigued by languages and especially writing systems, natural and invented, I have been very curious and impressed with all that Tolkien has created, and especially by its beauty and elegance. I have found some beautiful fonts in various styles of different languages; this was one of the first things that drew me to Tolkien's work...

Here's a question I've had for over forty years that has always bothered me & maybe you can answer it for me. The Valar gave the children of Earendil & Elwing the choice to be counted among the First-born or the Second-born. Elrond chose to counted among the Eldar & that choice also went to his children. Elros chose to be counted among the Atani & so his children were automatically mortal, although they were given long life-spans. Why is that? Is it because Elrond married an Elf? If Elros chose to be mortal, but also married an Elf, would his descendants have been given the same choice? Arwen chose to be mortal & the choice was not passed to her son, Eldarion. Is this a question only Mandos knows the answer to? LOL! I'd really like to know your opinion on this....
@harrylangton3206
@harrylangton3206 6 жыл бұрын
That is a really good question. I don't know the answer but if I were to hazard a guess I would say that the choice is lost unless they have enough elven heritage. So half elven would get it, and three quarter elven - Arwen - but her children with Aragorn would not as they don't have quite enough elven heritage? Or maybe once they choose to be mortal they (and their bloodline) can never go back? Honestly don't know!
@hotmale5221
@hotmale5221 6 жыл бұрын
I think you might be on to something. Technically, the first half-elf was Dior, son of Beren & Luthien. And if I remember correctly, he wasn't given a choice, he was automatically an elf. That might be because his grandparents were a Maia & an elf that had seen the light of the Two Trees, since he was born after Beren & Luthien were sent back from the Halls of Mandos & were both mortals....

Tolkien’s work has inspired me. I am not a literary scholar, and because of that I’m really inspired by most of all Tolkien, Peter Jackson’s films, and Howard Shore’s symphonies of the films. They have altogether inspired my life. And as a result I’m happy to see literature scholars such as this creating videos that explain more in depth the story.
