Some nice points made, but two nits here: 1) "Chapter 6 is all about fear" is seriously overstated, as you can see at least at three points: 1.1) During the meeting, Ralph repeatedly holds fear in check and speaks reason: "This is more than a hunter's job" -- "Now think, Jack." -- "If the beast isn't there we'll go up the mountain and look; and light the fire." -- "We'll eat first. Then go." These are not the words of one consumed by fear. Sure, there is considerable fear, but the children still master it, make partially sound plans, and carry them out in a systematic manner. 1.2) When going alone into the castle, Ralph "realized with surprise that he did not really expect to meet any beast". So even in this extreme situation, Ralph is still able to act in cold blood rather than feeling his blood run cold. 1.3) Finally, Ralph and Jack discuss further actions when they find the castle empty: "We'll have to go back and climb the mountain. That's where they saw the beast." -- "The beast won't be there." -- "What else can we do?" Those are not the words of boys scared out of their minds. Rather, they simply stick to their more or less reasonable plan to systematically assess the situation and relight the fire if possible. Right afterwards, Ralph's problem isn't at all to cheer frightened children, but rather to stop them from wasting their time in idle play; fear is almost completely forgotten at this point. In conclusion, while chapter 6 is the first chapter where the general direction of the boys' actions is based on their mounting (irrational) fears, those actions, in detail, are still carried out with quite some rational deliberation. So there isn't any landslide from rationality to panic; rather, fear is slowly expanding its range and effect, not continuously, but in fits and starts: two steps ahead, one step back... 2) It's not quite true that none of the boys notices that society at large is just as flawed as their own micro-society on the island. Apart from Piggy's remarks in chapter 1 ("They are all dead"), Simon, as usual, exhibits an amazing perceptiveness in chapter 6: "However Simon thought of the beast, there rose before his inward sight the picture of a human at once heroic and sick." If only Simon would have had the verbal power to express himself to the others, or if only the others would have had the patience and listening skills to understand him... Failure at communication, cooperation, and using different talents in concert rather than in rivalry is among the main reasons for the downward spiral into disaster.

James Hoyle yes and he's doing a great job. Mr B is not God's gift to GCSE English students. He's a good starting point after you edit out all the woffle and irrelevant crap

You keep going on about the innate evil blah blah but this is crap. The younger boys are far less evil than the older ones so surely this implies innate innocence, right? And that evil is learned through aging... The adults are killing each other too.
