'Suddenly the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. Éomer rode there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first éored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Théoden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when his world was young. His golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shone like an image of the Sun, and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed. For morning came, morning and a wind from the sea; and the darkness was removed, and the hosts of Mordor wailed, and terror took them, and they fled, and died, and the hoofs of wrath rode over them. And then all the host of Rohan burst into song, and they sang as they slew, for the joy of battle was on them, and the sound of their singing that was fair and terrible came even to the City.' - The Return of the King - The Ride of the Rohirrim.

Personally, I like this version more than the book. In the book, the arrival of the Rohirrim was STIRRING to my heart, just as this one is here. The portrayal of Theoden at the moment of the charge is quite different. "And in that very moment, away behind in some courtyard of the city, a cock crowed. Shrill and clear he crowed, recking nothing of war nor of wizardry, welcoming only the morning that in the sky far above the shadows of death was coming with the dawn. And as if in answer there came from far away another note. Horns, horns, horns, in dark Mindolluin's sides they dimly echoed. Great horns of the north wildly blowing. Rohan had come at last." But the kings speech here, some was spoken by his son Eomer when he found what he thought was the remains of his sister, and he went mad, almost undoing their absolutely magnificent charge in to the flank of the Orc army. The king prior to the charge: - At that sound, the bent shape of the king suddenly sprang erect. Tall and proud he seemed again, and rising in his stirrups he cried in a loud voice, more clear than any there had ever heard a mortal man achieve before: "Arise, arise Riders of Theoden! Fell deeds awake, fire and slaughter! Spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered, a sword day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now, Ride to Gondor!" Eomer upon finding the body of Eowyn amidst the wreck of the fallen Lord of the Nazgul: "'Death, death, death! Death take us all! Death! Ride, ride to ruin, and the worlds ending!' And with that the host began to move. But the Rohirrim sang no more. DEATH they cried with one voice, loud and terrible..." I guess both work, exquisitely well. But I do like the way they did it here.

Fucking poetry holy shit I gotta read the book again
@welshlout34003 жыл бұрын
Combining the two scenes into one was a clever choice for efficiency and for giving Theoden’s speech a memorable tone that distinguishes it from the speech Aragorn gives at the black gate. The fatalistic “ride to ruin” and the “death” chant happening immediately after the conventionally inspiring rhetoric is exactly the kind of thing the charge needed. That death is acknowledged and embraced at the outset is just the sort of thing that I could see inspire fear into the hordes of evil.
@rorus95303 жыл бұрын
I don't like the scene with gandalf vs the witch king though. Firstly, I don't think he is more powerful than gandalf, and secondly, I don't think he would simply fly off when he had gandalf at his mercy.
@shkotayd97493 жыл бұрын
@@rorus9530 Agreed on that part. In the book, Gandalf was about to face off with the Witch King, and had not been knocked back, nor lost his staff. He was the only one able to stand up to the horror of the kings glare and magic. But, when the horns sounded, off the king did go. He wanted to fight Gandalf just as the city finally fell, and did not foresee the coming of the Rohirrim, and went to protect his flank. Almost did it too. Killed Theoden, utterly scattered the cavalry charge that was cutting his army in two, and brought morale back to his own camp. He just didnt count on Eowyn and Merry when he recalled the prophecy of his demise :D
@111sdh3 жыл бұрын
I do love the difference in the book... in the charge of Theoden King the Rohirrim "sang as they slew" a sort of powerful joy of battle against the dark forces. The charge of Eomer King the chant was "Death! Death!" -- much more fell and angered a kind of vengeful rage.
@trajano7773 жыл бұрын

Actually, according to the movie it looks like the Rohirrim would have been defeated without the intervention of Aragorn (also because the Corsairs would have *added* their number to the oliphants and the routed orcs).
