One of the coolest scenes in the trilogy when the Balrog is introduced and when it's approaching them at first. The buildup is great. IMO the most badass demon in films (can't think of any better at least). Let alone in books, this thing is just terrific in its flaming awesomeness.

And to think there was more of them in service of the Dark Powers, namely Morgoth and his lieutenant Sauron (Could name Gothmog the Lord of Balrogs). Of the same order of spirits as the one who guards/follows the sun, Arien, but fell into shadow under Melkor in his splendor before he became the Morgoth.

People don't understand how cool this is. This a Balrog, one of the very doom guards of Morgoth, sent out as a host to collapse armies. There were maybe less than a dozen, and they warred along side Dragons making the battlefield covered in flame and shadow. Like the Dragons, few if any survived that war as told in the Silmarillion... yet, there was word that Durin's Bane, one of the Balrogs in battle with the armies of Dwarves, chased them deep into the chasms of Kazadum, and was lost in the innumerable great halls and was unable to find his way to the surface ever again. There the dark things and the orcs fed of his power, until he was awoken dozens of centuries later and came face to face with Gandalf the Grey.

The music, the tone.......it was like i was on the adventure with them. It's hard to explain but........like when i was watching the Hobbit, yes it's set back in those days but with the CGI overload and modern 4k cameras it still felt too modern. The Lord of the Rings trilogy looked like it visually came out of the book, wasn't too HD and high teck. For 2001 the Balrog looked perfect enough, letting the music take the lead and not the CGI, now movies are doing it the other way around. Music is a BIG part of the story, whatever story your telling. Sorry if this sounded off, just trying to explain my feeling for this trilogy the best i can.

This. This is where Gandalf shows his magical prowess. Other times he just uses his staff to make lights or crack rocks. Here, he kills a giant flaming demon beast while falling hundreds of meters. On his own. He then gained enough XP to become about 17th level (from about 10th or 11th) and became Gandalf The White.

Tolkien was a master of crafting worlds, but equally, he was untouchable when forging ominous personas and entities. The tests of power between light and dark, between conflicting entities, usually through battle and war within his universe, are so grand and epic, and they never feel as if the parties involved are using video game cheats to achieve those levels of might. Instead, they feel tangible and justified in their might, due to the eons of their existences, the origins of their respective creations, or the intelligence they wield to serve as the only attribute to match their physical/mystical prowess. When you attach such compelling lore to each individual character, you draw out the details that truly distinguish them from other universes, where powerful creatures only feel as if they serve as spectacle, rather than plot-enriching devices.

@Filiouss8 жыл бұрын
+K IRA Probably Balrog wins. Its depending on the type of dragon. For Example; smaug versus this balrog; Balrog wins easyly.
@StudioMod8 жыл бұрын
+Filiouss No I think it was pretty well established that Balrogs were second to dragons, but only barely. Like you said it depends on the dragon, but Dragons are severely larger for the most part, and their very magical, making most of the magic fire the balrog uses useless, and the dragon fire useless to the balrog vice-versa. It would be an animalistic fight and the dragon really has the winning body for that, being so large and toothed. Regardless, it would be a fight that would leave the other out of commission for quite some time.
@Filiouss8 жыл бұрын
Slaver Its very easy to say that; Balrogs are used to be Maia in First Age of Middle World (now they are servants of Melkor) and Dragons are not. So Balrogs probably beat dragons. Of course that Fight may vary according to the type of dragons and Balrogs. We dont know exactly the winner, it would be very exciting.
@Filiouss8 жыл бұрын
ᅚᅚ Balrogs have types like dragons, The Commander of Balrogs, Gothmog is the Most Powerfull Balrog in the Middle Earth. He Killed Feanor(First Elfs, and Creator of Silmarillons), Fingon and Ecthelion. He probably kill the Ancalagon the Black but I would like to see that battle too :)

@TheMushroombadger7 жыл бұрын
Ruben Manssens You seriously suggesting that digital effects have gotten worse over time? That's so fucking retarded.
@rubenmanssens7 жыл бұрын
Maybe it looks more detailed now, and animators have way more options, but back then they used cgi as a last resort, and when they used it, they made it look convincing by using cgi in a dark enviroment or where you couldnt see details well, now directors usually show off with their cgi.
@Edelweiss11027 жыл бұрын
+TheMushroombadger The digictal effects themselfes may have gotten better, leaving the animators with tons of options. But the use of it definitely didn't. Back in the day they used CGI as a last way out, and if they did, they tried to do it as convincing and realistic as possible. Nowadays the directors often just go way overboard and the movie becomes one big cghi slaught fest. Just compare the Hobits with the LotR triology. The cgi in the Hobbit often files lifeless, overused, not really fitting. If you're going to use cgi in like 90% of your movie you might as well make an entirely animated movie instead. I prefer a good mixture of good acting and staging with some cgi where need over cgi slaugh fests anyday, LotR is a perfect example of how it's done.

To be sure, Gandalf tried hard to suppress his own power in Moria, so the Balrog would not sense him. I bet the Balrog thought it would be an easy win because Gandalf was a Maia bound in mortal flesh. Then Gandalf revealed his power, and reminded the Balrog, that the demon is hideous, and fallen far from what he could have been. While Gandalf, bound as he is, has enough light to banish the Balrog's darkness. He smote his foe, but had not earned his rest, as his work was as yet unfinished.

I remember fighting Balrogs in Ultima Online. They were tough even with prep time. Gandalf kills one on a chance encounter-solo. Righteous.
