The Witch-King of Angmar actually hesitates when he realizes he is not facing a man, and he recognizes Merry's sword as being a Barrow blade, a special enchanted sword that is dangerous to the undead. Which it's both Merry and Éowyn that bring down the Lord of the Nazgûl. Both of their swords are destroyed after stabbing the Witch-King, and both are also poisoned, due to the powers the Witch-King possessed.

Sam's victory over Shelob actually cemented him as one of the greatest warriors of the Third Age. That was the first time she had ever been wounded in her entire life, as well as the first time she ever encountered an opponent she couldn't overcome who forced her to retreat.

The absolute best part about that is that he’s not really a skilled warrior or fighter. He’s simply so devoted to Frodo that failing to save him isn’t an option for Sam. Sam is a lesson to all of us about loyalty.

Shelob was basically so arrogant she did not even consider that Sam could hurt her, and that is why she accidentally impaled herself on his sword with all her weight while trying to crush him (that is the description in the book).

I appreciate you doing Theoden's death scene justice. Most reactions don't. A couple have even skipped it! So it's very appreciated. It's the most emotional scene in the trilogy for me after Gandalf's passing on the bridge. Once I realized Gandalf was back, and with rewatches, Theoden's scene became the most emotional.

Also just to make it better next time you watch that scene remember this; theadon’s father hated his father (theadon’s grandfather) and stayed in Minas tirth until theadon was around 10, so when he looks on the city burning he is looking on his childhood home on fire that he has come to save 😭😭😭😭

It's been a while since I read the books but someone reminded me that the "DEATH" battle cry was later in the battle. When Eomer found his uncle the king dead and his sister Eowyn apparently dead he rallied the Rohirrim with grief and rage and they cleaned up the rest of the forces, and I believe "death" was their battle cry then. In the books, the undead had already been released after helping with another battle on the way, but Aragorn has some other help arrive in the form of his old ranger buddies and Elrond's twin sons, Arwen's brothers. Eomer didn't realize Eowyn was still alive until after the battle when he asked why his sister's body wasn't in a place of honor alongside their uncle. Both she and Merry were near death because of the backlash from killing the witch king, but Aragorn's skills at healing brought them back. It's one of the ways the people of Gondor knew him as their king because of all the work he did after the battle healing those who had received magic-ish wounds from the Nazgul and Felbeasts. Also I always thought Eomer's actor did a great job portraying the shock and grief of him finding his sister apparently dead. I kind of ruined the mood the first time my dad saw it though by saying during that scene, "Don't worry, she's only MOSTLY dead! There's a big difference between that and all dead."

Denethor’s story is more detailed in the books. He has been using the a palantir (one of the crystal balls like the one Pippen looked into) to see Sauron’s intentions and even attempt to mentally assail him. As happened with Saruman, Sauron was able to use that connection to corrupt and derange Denethor’s mind. Seen from this perspective, Denethor is not just an idiot and a bad father. He was trying to help his people but was simply no match for the power of Sauron. One can be more sympathetic to his fate given what really happened to him.

I feel like they could’ve explained his story better in the movie with a few lines of dialogue or a brief scene showing him with the palantir.

I need to copy and paste this paragraph into so many reaction videos. Everybody gets confused with Denethor's actions. I think Tolkien wanted to express despair in his characterisation of Denethor and the mistake of thinking you know everything because you've looked into a Palantir.

One of my favorite scenes in the book is when Shelob (the giant spider) first sees Frodo holding the light up; "She had been there when that light had first shown, it didn't scare her then, it didn't scare her now" Because Shelob is anceint, and more than just a big spider. Great bit of world building.

Issues addressed, now for trivia. The actor who played Gothmog, the Orc leader of Sauron's armies who declares, "the age of men is over", also plays the Witch King. So in the scene where the two characters are talking to each other, it is one actor talking to himself. :D Also, that brief shot of Sam's arm holding Sting as he appears to help Frodo, was not Sean Astin's arm. It was actually Peter Jackson's, the director/producer. He decided two weeks before the film's release that he wanted a bit of an old West, gunslinger moment for Sam, so he grabbed his replica Sting and got Andy Serkis, who was visiting, to film the shot in Jackson's studio apartment. The footage was sent via internet to WETA digital in New Zealand and added to the movie. Last bit of trivia is about the scene with Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas standing on the shore threatening the Corsairs on the boats. The crew of the main one they address are actually most of the production crew; the one Legolas "accidentally" shoots, for example, is Peter Jackson. There were also camera crews, designers, people from the costume and props department, all getting in one last chance for a cameo. :D

My dad passed away this April, and this was one of his favorite stories. He gifted the books to my mom in the 80s, and when I grew up in the 90s, it was a story I always heard and held dear. So when the movies came out, it was a family affair. Later it became our movies (extended) to watch on a rainy Sunday. I love seeing your reaction and how you enjoy the story so much. It feels like I get to experience it all over again. Thank you. 🥲

Imagine being king Theoden. After a successful Calvary charge and routing the enemy, you hear chanting and feel the earth rumbling. As you turn you see giant beasts, with tusks as long as two men. They stand as tall as many buildings in Rohan. You have never seen any animal like this, you have heard rumors but doubted them to be true. To have the courage, after having those rumors confirmed in front of you, to lead another charge right into the line of beasts, is such a testament to his character and will.

What I love about the ride of the rohirrim is that unlike Denethor (who abviously is a more comlpexe character than is being shown in the moive) Theoden is leading from the front, you can clearly see his white horse being at the very front during the charge. He leads from example not just by giving orders.

I love how Tolkien described Sam fighting shelob (giant spider) in the book; No onslaught more fierce was ever seen in the savage world of beasts; where some desperate small creature armed with little teeth alone, will spring upon a tower of horn and hide that stands above its fallen mate.

These movies are truly the epitome of glorious, epic, cinema. I am constantly getting fully body goosebumps at the pure excitement and extreme emotion, hit after hit. The march of th Ents on Isengard as the soprano sings, the horn of the Rohirrim and Theoden’s speech to as they ride to death, Eowyn avenging her father in the battlefield as a shield maiden of Rohan, the whole of Middle Earth giving praise to the heroes, the hobbits. The score riddles me with shudders and chokes me, it’s MASTERFUL. I saw this on dvd at home as a teen. What I’ve had done to see this in the cinema. It’s the odyssey of our time.

Fun fact, in both the book and this movie, Aragorn and company don't buy the Mouth of Sauron's bullshit claims of capturing Frodo for a second. They know what Frodo was carrying and what his mission was. If Sauron really _had_ captured Frodo, he wouldn't have even _bothered_ with sending an Envoy like the Mouth to Parley. He just would have put on the Ring and wiped out their army without even a pretense of treating with them. By even attempting this guile trick, the Mouth gave away that Frodo was alive and well and _uncaptured,_ and that they had encountered him, come across his things somehow, but he himself eluded them, they yet had no idea why he was even there or who he was.... and both Aragorn and Gandalf were well aware of this. Indeed, Sauron had no idea what had happened at Cirith Ungol, but had recieved Frodo's possessions in a package that had been sent to the Mouth just before the infighting broke out. The Orcs there mostly wiped each other help (Sam finished the handful that remained) so nobody could tell him who the prisoner was or anything that had been found out. He thought a band of probably elvish warriors (guessed by the mithril-shirt and elvish cloaks) and their halfling scout (the prisoner, he thought had been rescued by his elvish masters) to help them, were sneaking about but to their purpose he could not guess. Likely spying for his enemies, he thought. just after the prisoner's stuff had been sent away the elvish masters must had attacked and killed everyone in the citadel to keep whatever the halfling knew from reaching his ears... he assumed. So he set up the deception that the halfling was captured and had already spilled the beans. He didn't realize the _TRUE_ extent of the danger the halflings posed, and the purpose of their mission, until Frodo was _literally inside the Chamber of Fire_ and claimed the Ring as his own... and against all shocking odds _actually MASTERED it_ and became, for a few seconds, a Dark Lord in his own right, which Sauron sensed happening the moment it did and proceeded to _absolutely shit bricks_ when the Ring stopped calling to him and he sensed it gathering its power under _another MASTER._ In the book it points out the moment Frodo claimed the Ring and put it on, Sauron's eye snapped STRAIGHT to Mt. Doom and all his malicious will was straightly withdrawn from the Orcs still fighting at the Black Gate as if they had been totally forgotten, which caused them to lose all unit cohesion and tactical ability. He also called the Nazgul to abandon the battle and wing it as fast as possible for the Chamber of Fire... further dumping the battle victory in Aragorn's lap because _the Ring being lost to him was the only thing he cared about at that moment._

Another piece of trivia: when Aragorn say "For Frodo" and runs towards Sauron's Army, the choir sings in quenya (the elvish language) "if by my life or death i can protect you, i will". Its the words that Aragorn said to Frodo in the first movie, when he joined the fellowship. Howard Shore is a freaking genius!

Small clarification: Gandalf would have defeated the Nazghul leader were it not for the fact that Sauron was giving him a good amount of his power, knowing that they would fight. I don't think it says in the movie but in the book Gandalf fights all the Nazghuls at once for a whole night, so in Middle-earth at that time he should be the second strongest character after Sauron. I hope you don’t get discouraged by them taking your videos down. I love your commentary and reactions and I hope you keep growing! Much love

This movie is the most incredible end to a trilogy that I've ever seen, and I rewatch the whole journey at least once a year. That being said, I will never not laugh at how ready those orcs were for a gang war.

I watched these reactions a while ago, but I just kept thinking about how good they were so I wanted to come back and show my appreciation. These are some of my favorite LotR reactions ever - and I've seen A LOT. It's just so good to see someone show deep emotional investment while giving smart, thoughtful thematic analysis, _especially_ when blind to the canonical material. +1 for band geek status

The books explain there is healing power in the hands of the King. This becomes one of the signs to prove Aragorn is the rightful King of Gondor.

Hey man, I definitely recommend you read the books now! You’ll get so much more backstory and lore on everything and more about the characters. If you aren’t big into reading, there are some very immersive audio books out there, that really make you feel like you’re there in the story and watching it all happen. I would definitely do one of the two after finishing these movies, as the story is much more detailed and expansive than what the movie show.

Eowyn actually contracted the same illness as Frodo did by the hands of the witch-king. This is why she was incapacitated by her arm wound. Aragorn being the true king was able to heal this, and this proved to the people of gondor that he was the rightful king, even before Aragorn planned to reveal this to them.

9:23 I’m sure someone already told you this, but Denithor had a Palantir (crystal ball) and Sauron has been polluting his mind for ages. Plus lots of other things. There is a suggestion that a lack of wife may be due to her dying in childbirth with Faramir who is the youngest brother

The Ride of the Rohirrim might very well be responsible for more manly tears than the movie Old Yeller. And as others have said Denethor got dealt dirty here. I love the movies, but in the books he's a far more complex and tragic character. The movies make him into little more than a cardboard villian. Gandalf also didn't get off entirely. His confrontation with the Witch King of Agmar is alot less one sided. Its also probably one of the most epic scenes (in the book) in a story filled with epic scenes: In rode the Lord of the Nazgûl. A great black shape against the fires beyond he loomed up, grown to a vast menace of despair. In rode the Lord of the Nazgûl, under the archway that no enemy ever yet had passed, and all fled before his face. All save one. There waiting, silent and still in the space before the Gate, sat Gandalf upon Shadowfax: Shadowfax who alone among the free horses of the earth endured the terror, unmoving, steadfast as a graven image in Rath Dínen. "You cannot enter here," said Gandalf, and the huge shadow halted. "Go back to the abyss prepared for you! Go back! Fall into the nothingness that awaits you and your Master. Go!" The Black Rider flung back his hood, and behold! he had a kingly crown; and yet upon no head visible was it set. The red fires shone between it and the mantled shoulders vast and dark. From a mouth unseen there came a deadly laughter. "Old fool!" he said. "Old fool! This is my hour. Do you not know Death when you see it? Die now and curse in vain!" And with that he lifted high his sword and flames ran down the blade. And in that very moment, away behind in some courtyard of the city, a cock crowed. Shrill and clear he crowed, recking nothing of war nor of wizardry, welcoming only the morning that in the sky far above the shadows of death was coming with the dawn. And as if in answer there came from far away another note. Horns, horns, horns, in dark Mindolluin's sides they dimly echoed. Great horns of the north wildly blowing. Rohan had come at last.
