She's speaking about her fears with being in the public eye-maybe in the beginning, people adore her and follow her music, but later get "bored" of her. She's afraid of being discarded- how many current pop singers share that? "The truth is I am a toy that people enjoy 'til all of the tricks don't work anymore." It's brutally honest and so compelling how she can tell her experience in such a visceral way. I love her.

It's a song that has a double meaning, or rather it says the same thing regarding her love relationships and her fame. Her fame got in the way of her relationship, her lover did not like how much success she had, as it made their relationship unbalanced. The excitement and freedom of her new life did not bode well with the extatic feeling of being in love. She was also angry, proud, jealous and possessive (the rest of the album). She also realized that she was the one to put the effort, as she compares herself to a toy people play with until they're bored. They like her quirkiness, her sensitivity and her art, but when she's depressed all of this reflects on her qualities in a negative way. Remember, there's love and then possessiveness. There's pride, and then there's ego. The same things but in a positive or negative light seem wildly different, but they come from the same place. Some people have a hard time recognizing love when it's expressed through anger or fear, which drives them away. I know what it feels like to see angry words come out from a place of love. She managed to understand that the problem lied in her inability to communicate her feelings in a healthy way, and her lover's inability to try to understand her. But anyway... Put yourself in your lover's shoes once in a while, and you won't suffer like this, i guess. But also, never forget your worth. You're not a toy, you're a person. With your freedom and desires.
@Raccocooney5 жыл бұрын
I might be two years late but anyways. Melodrama is a concept album revolving around one night at a party and this song means quite literally what it says. But yeah, you can interpret it that way I suppose.
@moongrum14 жыл бұрын
this is a very wrong interpretation but I understand how you came about it. Lorde never wants to be a popstar, she says it all the time. it does seem to have that narrative, though. the album concept is a one-night party, "Liability" is introspective and intimate ≠ not her relationship with the public.

This performance was amazing. Her authentic emotion really comes through to her audience. I almost cried hearing how real this performance is. It made me love her even more than I already do.

god I hate how much I relate to this song. lorde is so authentic and emotional in all the music she makes - she makes it for herself and I SO respect that. keep doing what you're doing lorde! we love you

God she's amazing. The unadulterated pure emotion she manages to weave into her lyrics and singing is legendary. Only artist who can bring me to tears in the first few seconds.

This is my favourite Lorde song. It reminded me that I used to feel like this in my twenties. It's crystallized emotion.

This song means so much to me because I feel like it sums up so many of my friendships. I love it, but it makes me so sad too. That's how you know an artist has reached a level few have reached.

Beautiful. For me it is about loving yourself before you love anyone else. Once you love yourself each part of you is easy to love for others.

Definitely my favorite part: ..I'll go home Into the arms of the girl that I love The only love I haven't screwed up... Besides everything that can happen this is the love that we need to keep and never screw up. Great song I cant stop listening.

It’s about herself. She’s not lesbian. She said that all a stranger would see is a girl dancing alone stroking her cheek.
