I Played Lords of the Fallen (2023): I was lucky enough to be invited to a preview event in London to play the game for 2 and a half hours and interview the Creative Developer Cezar Virtosu. In this In-depth hands-on preview video I will be showing off new Gameplay, a walkthrough of the opening areas, discuss gameplay mechanic like Umbral and Axiom and New Lore details.

Basically- Lies of P: Bloodborne meets Pinocchio. Lords of the Fallen: Dark Souls meets Blasphemous. Definitely not complaining. This looks awesome.

The drip, seamless co-op, and the messed up demon enemies are huge draws for me. I know many people think that From’s games ruin other games for them, but many souls-likes have features that make you wish Fromsoft copied others for once. Hopefully this game holds up on release day.

Reminds me of the time warp/travel feature in Titanfall 2. I forget the name of it, but the device lets you time jump throughout the level to get past insurmountable obstacles and hazards. I hadn’t seen something like that before. Sounds like this lantern is somewhat similar?

On our Polish side one site also had some interesting things to say. Like for instance the involvement of Devs personal favorite pop culture elements integrated into the game. Like the Lightreaper (Smiling knight on that 3 headed dragon and Pursuer of this game) being based in some way on Batman who Laughs. Or that people who made it really like Blasphemous. Seems like those devs are one of those that make the game they want to play and that is a good sign.

20:57 the way the fireball physically forces you back, grinding your heels into the dirt is awesome. I hope that weighty feeling translates into other aspects of gameplay. I wouldnt want my character to feel as heavy as Arthur from rdr2 or anything. But your character usually feels very light in these games, being able to whirl and flip like nothing, so it could be very new to have a character feeling a bit more connected to the physics

It was a really great fight - I quickly realised that despite how intimidating his zweihander looked, he is deadly at mid range.

Your character usually feels light in Soul like games? I mean, compared to what... Because one of the distinguishing features of the genre has always been relatively slow, heavy movement and combat compared to other action games. Its definitely been getting faster, but it's still far from, say DMC or Ninja Gaiden.

Excellent preview Smough! I feel like no game managed to do a dark phantasy this brilliantly, since Bloodborne...The Nazgūl-like art direction, the enemy design, the setting, the lore. TLOTF looks like the most faithful Souls-like we'll get (Nioh aside), that doesn't just copy From's Dark Souls like the first one (ironically hehe). But has alot of unique and innovative additions to the genre. And i couldn't be happier, it's a day one!

I feel that developers of souls likes are now understanding that they have a level of quality and polish that the community expects. This game alongside Lies of P, seemingly understand that. Both titles are looking really good and the confidence that all the play session reviews of Lords of the Fallen have given me makes me think things are going to get much better. The Surge, Surge 2, Lords of the Fallen 1, Thymesia, etc, all just don’t scratch that itch for me. It’s hard when you have had caviar to switch back to tuna.

@SmoughTown - Could one play through the entire game in Umbral if they wanted to (despite the difficulty)? This would make the living world of Axiom entirely irrelevant. Good game design would have you weave through both worlds to progress.

I believe so? and you could rest at a vestiage and then like immediately go back into umbral after resting. They did mention they were interested in challenge runs of Umbral only etc.

It sounds like you can but good luck with that, since there is a system in place that will call more and more enemies to you. Since this game has a stamina system you can't fight hordes forever, it sounds like if you stay in umbral for a long time you are guaranteed to die. Maybe it can be viable on higher level character?

It really needs to be stressed that this game is not only a complete reboot of the original with everything different, but has a completely different developer. Hexworks studios has seemed to knock it out the park here, and I'm worried people will have a bad taste from the crappy first game deck13 studios put out.

I hope they brought back the unique combos/attacks that you can do if you time your consecutive attacks correctly. That was one of the couple of unique and innovative things they did in the first one that went under appreciated imo.

I'm getting more and more excited for this game. From the couple reviews I've seen so far there seems to be much consensus. I hope it will run decent on non-flagship hardware, seen its graphic fidelity and UE5 engine. Optimization must be good. That, for me, will decide if I buy this game at launch or not.

Yeh for sure, I also hope that it runs as well on console, as it did on the pc I played on! But overall I was very happy with my time with it. Especially the two worlds system, which is defo more than a gimmick

Thanks to your review I definitely will buy this AND a ps5. I trust your judgment in games. You don't just praise or appreciate them for design, graphics, or mechanics (although those are important as well). You also give a good sense of how immersive the game is in its story and worldbuilding. I.e., you're very good at letting us know whether a game has this SPARK that will just engulf us in a unique experience. Your explanation of the dual world system piques my interest in a way that only few games can. Thanks so much and keep up the good work!

I hope they make it so that you can always be invaded in umbral. That would make it way more threatening and cool. Also, invaders wouldn’t have to be as try hard if they weren’t invading tanks 24/7. Best of both worlds.

The boss fights look legit. I’ve been playing Remnant 2 and having the seem-less coop is nice. I can’t wait to see to them implement it here.
