I grew up in Fresno from 1945 to 1967. It was approximately 80,000 in population at the time. The Central Valley, also known as the San Joaquin Valley, is considered by many as the fruit and bread basket of the world. The large basin of the Valley collects a lot of smog from the San Francisco and Los Angeles areas plus it's own contribution. The last 20-30 years have seen an improvement of the air quality, but we are experiencing a huge influx of people from SF and LA as a result of the high cost of living. Fresno now has 546,000 people and Clovis next door has 125,000+. It is quickly becoming another Los Angeles with traffic problems, crime and other issues brought by population influx. It is a nice place to live, close to both the coast and mountains, but getting harder to get around. A town southeast of Fresno by the name of Selma used to be the Raisin Capital, but Fresno usurped it. Merced to the north west called itself the Gateway to Yosemite, but Fresno took that away, too, by naming the airport the Fresno Yosemite Airport. The air terminal is still called the Fresno Air Terminal (FAT) by the FAA. Yes, there are lots of homeless - we used to call them bums. Yes, there is trash and graffiti. Most of the poor live "south of the tracks," but there are lots of poor neighborhoods surrounding the immediate downtown. The reason you see clean streets downtown is that most of the city is now government offices (local, state and Federal) and the present mayor tries very hard to keep the area clean. People don't live there in large quantities. They commute from the northern suburbs. The downtown is largely Hispanic now. In the "old" days, there were a number of great, art deco theaters now somewhat run down: the Crest, Hardy's, White, Warnor's and Wilson. Cost of living is better than most places in California. The interesting homes you were looking at about 20 minutes in on the video are called Craftsmen homes - something developed by Sears and Roebuck. Very nicely designed and built. It does get hot in the summer - low 100's, but as we like to joke, "It's dry heat." North Fresno and Clovis are the places to go for shops, restaurants and services. All in all, Fresno is a good place to live, perhaps better than most areas of California. Unfortunately, people are finding us out and moving here. Thanks for your nice review. Many of us hope that Fresno keeps getting bashed to keep the population down, but we are obviously losing.

Born and raised in Visalia, approximately 45 minutes south of Fresno. @brookswilson1072 enjoy your comments on the area. I might add that the hot San Joaquin Valley summers have been part of the landscape for as long as I can remember; the explosive gas/electric bills that doubled for me in the past 3 years have been directly linked to the Biden administration.

Welcome to Fresno, Joe and Nic! Been a resident for over 20+ years (originally from the Bay Area). Regarding homelessness, they do exist but they are just outside the downtown area (near the shelters). Our current mayor was the former police chief and does what he can to have them not squat within the downtown area. When you get the chance (if you haven't already), check out the nearby Yosemite NP, Sequoia NP as well Shaver Lake, Bass Lake and Huntington Lake in the Sierra Nevadas.

US 99 was the only way through San Juaquin Valley when I was a child, we used to stop at the different fruit/vegetable stands along the road. My favorite stop was near Fresno for watermelon, they kept them floating in old concrete cattle troughs with blocks of ice. My Dad would buy one and they'd split it open for us, we'd sit on the fenders of our '49 Chevy and eat and spit seeds to hearts content. It's weird to be so old...we may have enjoyed the last of the best. I hope there's some watermelons left for the rest of you. 😁😁😎😎👍👍

As a little boy I lived in downtown Fresno. Beginning when I was about 7 or 8 years old (1956-1957) my parents would allow me to see a movie alone at the Wilson Theater on Friday nights. I walked to and from the Theater by myself and never had any trouble. The "Main Drag" for teenagers was on Fulton Street, which is the street that the Wilson Theater is on. It was like the movie American Graffiti.

Hi there Joe and Nicole! I agree with you about the old Fresno courthouse, but remember that Cali is earthquake country, which can affect the life expectancy of our architecture. If you are impressed with Fresno, you will be blown away by our beautful coastal cities, yes! Including Oakland. Be sure to visit the Crocker Highlands, Rockridge, Trestle Glen Road and Montclair districts to see beautiful neighborhoods, Lake Merritt in the center of downtown, the thousands of acres of surrounding regional parks and the former Mills College now Northeastern. And of course the Oakland Hills and the Jack London Oak Tree downtown; Rockridge is one of the largest examples of pure Craftsman architecture also found in parts of Berkeley; the Oakland Museum of California is very special and check out the Estuary and Jack London Square; in spite of the crime numbers we have felt safe in our 47 years here with NO incidents and of course a Mediterranean climate that is the best in the country! Have fun!

Joe and Nic, you should go up to Northern California's Redwood Forest area and check out The Redwood State Parks none as Ave of the Giants as well as Humboldt county. You should visit Ferndale which is a very clean village with no homeless people as for homeless you should visit Eureka and Arcata

Eureka's pretty far north, and it's full of homeless now? Wow. I love California but had to leave when I became disabled. Had a condo in S.F. on straight side of Lombard Street. Used to travel the state; miss it so, and I love Fresno, but always there for work, so I missed those beautiful old theaters and buildings.

I’ve been to this place once when I was in school in the early 80s. My friend’s parents house is in Fresno but he studies at Orange County and because he doesn’t have a car so he asks me to drive him home every summer break (because he has a sister…😁). The impression I left here was going to pick Cheery which I will never forget. Thanks JOE & NIC brought back beautiful memories for me.

I have lived my entire life in Fresno and I have been happy here. I attended Fresno State University and worked as a social worker for around 30 years. I met my husband here and raised our grand daughter here. We are very fortunate that we can travel to wonderful places like Hawaii which is only a 5 hour flight from here but are always happy to return home. The majority of people here are good friendly people. Icam very blessed to live in Fresno.😊

Lol I've lived here 49 years (my entire life) and I'm impressed with how we're looking on your video too! 😂 We have our homeless, we have trash... but they've been really trying to revamp our downtown area and it really is nice down there now. And you know, in 49 years, half of which was lived in the poorest most gang populated area, I've never been mugged, never had a car stolen, i did have a cat broken into once 20+ years ago and all they stole were my cassette tapes 😂. It does get miserably hot here, and we get terrible tule fog in the winter, but other than that it's been a pretty good home to me. Thank you for such a great video❤

Thanks for doing a video on Fresno. I’ve lived here 32 years and Fresno does get an unfair rap mainly from false perspectives and here say. Fresno’s crime numbers may be high, but I’ve never experienced much of it. Like any town or city that mainly happens in it’s bad parts. Living in NE Fresno I don’t experience much of the high crime numbers. I will say that it use to be really inexpensive to live here and although I am not comparing to SF or LA it is getting more expensive the more that people move here. There are a lot of great quality people that live in this city.

During the last century California had it all. Beauty, weather, jobs. Fantastically diverse geography, industries, culture and population. By far the most desired state to live in. Unfortunately that popularity caused 100 years of uncontrolled growth, all but ruining paradise by the turn of the century. Now everyone loves to bash her. I left in 1990 and glad I did but I still like to visit.

That was done all over, not just in California during the1960s and 70s. A lot of it had to do with cities experiencing growth and the old buildings being too small. The smarter cities kept their older Civic buildings and built a "courthouse annex" or "city administration building" next to the Renaissance courthouse or Gothic city hall. The modern International style was cost effective if not attractive, so cities starting to feel the tightening of decreasing tax revenue built them

I moved to Fresno over 34 years ago at age 27. I moved to Fresno to find a place to settle down. My own personal experience has been wonderful. I have met some of the most beautiful giving people here. In addition Fresno is centrally located betelween the mountains and the coast. Very diversified of people and foods. Although crazy is here if one looks, and sadly, yet lately the homeless encampments has increase, but that seems like many places in California. Cost of living is manageable.
