Hello! Love the video! Wanted to make a few corrections - we actually have a fire department with two fire department buildings here in McCrory. Also, the Ken is open for events, plays, musicals (Motown and Hee-Haw) and holiday shows. Plus we have a lot more cats than what you saw :). Our closest movie theater is located in Searcy. It is apprx 35 minutes from here.

Lots of people don't go to a movie theater because they have air conditioning and 9000 channels of cable. Air conditioning killed off front porch socializing, cable TV and big screens eventually killed off the rest... 📺 📡

Great video Joe! I love Arkansas! I spent a lot of time there back in the 1970s. My grandparents owned around 150-200 acres and my parents had 10 with a spring running right through the middle of the property. The water was so clear that you could see crystal clear to the bottom. You could see the rainbow trout swimming through as well as other fish. This was in Yellville Arkansas. My Uncle opened the first pizzeria back in the early 1970s. Cappies Pizza. It was very successful and he opened a second location a year later in Mountain Home Arkansas. The natural beauty of the area is breathtaking. If anyone remembers, Dog Patch Arkansas was a big tourist spot back in the day. It's gone now. It was the hometown of Lil' Abner and his wife Daisy Mae in the Al Capp comic strip that ran from 1934-1977 in newspapers around the country. Great memories and natural beauty.

Arkansas is and has been for a long time, a ''long way to anywhere" sort of place. Only in Wyoming, do people drive further to work was a stat for many years. You deal with it or you leave. I always appreciate you noticing the cats. My son moved to France temporarily some years back, to work for a college fellowship scholarship he received. He had just met and was getting serious about his then girlfriend, who stayed behind in Texas. She adopted a foster cat that she named Joyce, to dote on while she waited for my son to return. I knew my son was serious about marrying her when he doled out 2K for Joyce's vet bills! My son and his girlfriend married in March of this year. They planned a honeymoon in Japan with friends that would take place in October. They went to Japan, were gone for just over 2 weeks while a friend stayed at their apartment to look after Joyce, who lived indoors. When they came home, my son called me to tell me that Joyce came down with an acute breathing problem within their first night home. They took turns watching over Joyce during the night, until she passed. My son was very sad, he said that he wished they had not left her to go overseas, but they had no idea she was ill. Little Joyce represented an important turning point in their relationship, cats and dogs can be so good at getting entangled in our hearts during the short time they are with us.

The newest and most classic Joe comment "the Dollar Trifecta". Your humor is insane, I love it. Now besides cats the "Trifecta" must be mentioned when it is noticed in a small town. Very good video as usual. I'm with you on the big Victorian and older homes even though I live in a 1200 sq. ft. cabin on Canyon Lake (it is easy to cool in Texas). I've always admired those homes and enjoy that your videos feature them when you encounter them. It seems good towns have cats also.

Hey Joe: Recently you traveled to a couple towns close to me. Brinkley was one and it is only 25 miles from Clarendon. You would like Clarendon which has gone down since I was a child but, it has a lot of history. It is the County seat with the court house (antique) and several historical homes that are on the register. Clarendon sits on White River and known history of fishing, hunting, shelling, etc. There has even been a couple movies made here and several books written. Just wanted to throw this information to you in case you are ever in this area again. I truly enjoy your videos.

I was raised just a few miles from Gibson Bayou Church and Cemetery, and occasionally attended services there in the late 60's and early 70's . I've had a few acquaintances and friends buried there in the past few years. It seems to be a place where a lot of the people who grew up around here want to be laid to rest at. I suppose it's a calm and peaceful place to be buried is the main reason. On a sadder note, Earle, once a bustling small town,is now one that seems to be going downhill at a rapid pace,but that is pretty much par for all of the small towns in Northeast Arkansas. All of them need an infusion of jobs to remain viable, but the jobs are all going overseas, leaving these once thriving villages in distress. What a shame on the business, industry, and government of this country.

I really enjoyed all your videos. You have a tendency to not talk a town or community down like another KZbinr does! You do your research and not just the research on poverty like he always does. What info you give is way better interesting than just crime and poverty. I mean poverty and crime are important, but they are "not" what makes a town or community what it truly is! Anyway, you find the good in each place you visit, which is very refreshing. You even find a small home pretty and interesting. You always talk about the history of a place too, which is nice. You don't just go and find the worst neighborhoods and cut the entire place down because of that area. Every single town in the U.S. has in some way, or another been impacted by so many different factors over the years, that usually cause a loss in population. You usually mention things like that. For my town it was the interstate in the 70's and then a major lumber mill that left our town. But it's still my hometown, I've never left and don't plan on it. It's such a great place to raise a family. As for why a big, beautiful home might be sitting empty, my thoughts are that a lot of the time it is just simply family issues with the children of the original owners, of course lots of other reason too. I know of several in my town that way and it's all because of family issues. Keep these great videos coming!

How about the only Carnegie library, completely restored and working! If you are ever back in Washington, Ritzville is on I-90 west of Spokane in the middle of the state. You will be blown away!!!!

There are a big difference between small rural towns of US and those one in Europe. US has extense towns, people live far away from house to house. However in Spain, my Country, houses are together and we see people on the streets to any hour of the day.

As a foreigner, I like the small town vibe.. at the same time, I wonder how life is in such places, wish the population grows but still stay relaxed, not too populated. Enough for businesses to thrive

Compared to European Towns these small towns in the USA look dead of life, i guess European towns really are built for folks to be a closer knit community.

@@duncancallum yes which is sad. But people have to have income, and some get bored, some want better opportunities. Hopefully small towns grow back, or maybe new ones will appear. City is nice, but the simple life of small towns..I think is much better, hopefully not too far from the city

It has been transfomed into a resort town. It is the jewel of the Delta! English Tudor beautiful! Let me know if I am bugging you, please. I know I have commented this a few times. probably the low average home value in McCory has to do with the smaller post-war bungalows, those are small & at least in places like Virginia, usually pretty cheap (even in quite wealthy towns) also, would Cajun be counted as a separate group, or would they be included into the "white" category?

What you may consider as squalor, lifelong residents of these small delta towns consider it as just poor folks quarters. Squalor brings a very negative impact on the description of the dwellings and surrounding areas of the less fortunate of the population. Although poor,most would give the shirt off their back to help a stranger in need.
@DonaldChisolm
@DonaldChisolm 10 ай бұрын
I think I’m correct in saying you just pretty much gave the definition of squalor. Maybe you are saying for those “less fortunate “(poor), it’s ok to not clean up your residence ect..@@bomcelya368

It's too bad you didn't get to feature the Woodruff County Courthouse in Augusta; it's beautiful and in the middle of a residential neighborhood surrounded by older homes - one of which, the Ferguson House, had to be razed in the last few years due to becoming too decayed to save. In Des Arc (pronounced Dez Ark) you likely drove right past the Frith-Plunkett House on the main road through town; it's all boarded up, but is historic due to being used as a Civil War hospital. I've spent years studying and documenting the decay of the infrastructure and architecture of the Arkansas Delta, as a passion project. Next time y'all are out this way, I could show you some fascinating towns.
