Eons ago, the Elder Gods were born. They created many planets before finally creating the perfect world, Gielinor, before vanishing, leaving their artefacts behind.
Soon, the artefacts were discovered by mortals, ascending them to godhood. One god, Saradomin, then conquered the realm of the Naragi but his actions attracted other gods. In the conflict, one Naragi named Guthix lost his daughter when Skargaroth fell on his house. Enraged, he grabbed Skargaroth's sword and slayed him. Guthix ascended to godhood, becoming what he hated most, and wandered the multiverse.
As he travelled, Guthix discovered Gielinor and invited mortals to his perfect world. He scattered runestones across the land, granting them magic and giving Gielinor the nickname Runescape, but soon, the mortals worshipped him. So Guthix slept, hoping to be forgotten.
In his absence, other gods started the devastating God War. Guthix awoke, banished all gods from Gielinor with a barrier called the Edicts of Guthix and returned to sleep. Mortal factions, longing for the return of their gods, hunted for Guthix's resting place, eventually killing him and removing the barrier.
In death, Guthix has granted you, the World Guardian, his power. Will there be a new God War? Will you seize power for yourself? Or will you AFK train instead?

Nice video, but shame you skipped whole 5th age which is, uhm, basically 99% of the game's story & lore. RS has one of the most complex storylines in MMOs. This video is basically lore from like last 3 years with 12 years of content skipped :P Oh well, that's just the format I guess, it's nice it got some recognition anyway.

As a lore nerd, a small clarification: The Elder artifacts are 12 items that the Elder gods used to create the worlds. The Catalyst, the Siphon, the Kiln, the Blade, the Locator, the Horn, the Measure, the Mirror and the Needle. However, only 7 are known to reside on Gielinor at this time. For example, at the moment, the most popular artifact in the spotlight is the Catalyst better known as the "Stone of Jas". It is a... well... stone. Owned by Jas, the eldest Elder God, and it is the centerpiece of the point in which the story is currently. Essentially the younger gods, who used the Elder Artifacts to rise to godhood are fighting over the massive amounts of power the Stone contains. It's pretty cool.

+Dr4gonshade Just to continue the thread. The Stone of Jas was actually the reason the God Wars ended. Zamorak, after stealing the power of Zaros, the dark god of control, used the stone to essentially scorched earth the entirety of Forinthry, Zaros' crumbling empire, now known as the wilderness. This made the Anima Mundi, or the soul of the world scream. The scream woke Guthix up and he kicked everyone out, and locked the door. Also you forgot to mention the Crown of Archival, which made Saradomin a god, and the Staff of Armadyl.

People going 'RuneScape has lore?' There's always been quests and books in the game if you read the dialogue. It was in and around 2008 that quests became more story intensive and that's kept improving over time. The focus in this video covers content that got added from 2013 to present day, where the plot and backstory got beefed up in transition to the Sixth Age.
