Simply unmatched soul-stirring majesty and intimacy - Loreena is a goddess...

I can’t believe I’ve been listening to this angel for over 30 years. I can always count on her music to soothe me when nothing else does. I’m glad to have passed on her music to many others. A hidden gem that deserves a broader audience. And I feel more people deserve to know and experience her brilliance as well. Personal favorites include The Gates of Istanbul and Beneath a Phrygian Sky from An Ancient Muse. Thank you.

This is one of my favorite songs of all time across any genre (and I'm mostly a rock and metal guy). Thanks for doing this, subbed just for covering Loreena!

The live concert she did at Alhambra, Spain makes the music come alive and lifts her music to new heights with a whole orchestra of traditional instruments. Not as smoothly produced as ger studio albums. Love it!

You MUST see the Alhambra concert JP - maybe even react to it? You won't believe how good it is, musically, visually, in every way.

😍 Oh my,my, the most melodic Mennonite, in Manitoba! I immediately did a deep dive on her, after hearing hers,(and I believe Mike Oldfields), version of "Bonny Portmore" on the Highlander series. Not to be mistaken for 'folk' music, she has and does have folk songs and influences. More properly she writes, covers, and records/performs, World music, Celtic, Middle Eastern,Canadian native/folk influences. The music she composed the music for the Canadian documentary on witchcraft in the Middle Ages, "The Burning Times", it is be-witching! Nice to change it up with this talented, auburn-haired, artist. Peace & Love.

I met a fiddle player who played on some of her recordings. He said she is a perfectionist and it shows in her music and recordings. I love her voice and genre of music.

Interesting, but not surprising. Her CD notes show how much background research she does on each song.

Absolutely beautiful track. My friend Patrick is a big Loreena fan and has played me a few songs, which I appreciated. But after hearing this one I'm all in. Got me choked up!

We agree completely on this one JP. She just takes you to a special place. Where your soul is calling to you. Have you done Dante’s Prayer? Have you? Or for similarly excellent lyrics, Prospero’s Speech. (Lyrics just don’t get any better than Shakespeare)

If someone asked me for my favourite female singers I would list Loreena McKennith together with Floor Jansen and Melissa Etheridge, different styles but o so great voices

The song is actually about expressing ones deep love of god. A love poem to the allmighty.

I can see that a few of your commentators did not get it. The lyrics are the work of a 16th century Christian mystic heavily influenced by the Sufi poets who wandered through Iberia for centuries previously, heavily influencing the development of the troubadour tradition. The Sufis frequently clothed their treatment of Divine love and unity in the idioms of romantic love. Read Rumi and Hafiz as the poetic exemplars. Don’t know what the commentators on twee and trite were expecting but they could stand to widen their horizons beyond this decade. This is not the best recording of the piece but overall this translation of the lyrics (I can’t recall off hand whether the original is Spanish or Latin) is very lyrical considering the need to retain the specific metaphors of the original while still being poetic and Loreena’s musical contribution make this piece sublime. If the listener cannot detect that it is not the fault of the music, but of the limitations of the listener. You could play this on a single reed flute and it would still be sublime. And yes, o uninitiated, that is a specific reference.

@@Owlstretchingtime78You'd think so wouldn't you... I am a fan, but at times have to be in the mood, and today I wasn't. Listenend to the first minute or so, and turned it off. If I never hear anything like that again, in that style with the twee and rather clichéd instrumentation, and singing I'll be perfectly okay with that.
