OMG!!!! Never in my life have I heard anyone react to Loreena McKennitt! Thank you Adam, and THANK YOU to the person who hassled you into it LOL. I LOVE her and have been lucky enough to see her in concert twice. She is just as good in concert as she is in recordings. She writes and sings songs that are based on different historical tales and times; many of her songs are old stories or poems put to music (The Lady of Shalott, Greensleaves, etc.). Her version of Dark Night of the Soul is based on a poem written by the 16th-century Spanish mystic and poet St. John of the Cross, and is one of my favourite songs of hers--she is inspired by different cultures and the literature they have inspired. Actually, I've met her--she's a very unique person (she knows my dad, it has nothing to do with me...:) Thank you!!!!!!

Blast from the past. Memories of me walking around with my discman at the turn of the millennium listening to Loreena McKennitt, Clannad and Enja. I still have the CD's, although I havn't had a CD player for more than a decade. Further listening would include Dante's Prayer, The Mummurs' dance, The Highwayman (for the story) and The Old Ways (that has a special place in my heart). Oh man, sometimes I am overwhelmed by grief for all the music I have forgotten but once loved so dearly. I guess you really can't see all the beauty of this world and keep it too.

Reading your post made me feel like I could have practically written it myself. The discman, too! I had a discman that claimed to be skip-proof, but I still always had to jog slow whenever I wore it. Lol! Love the songs you mentioned. Loreena McKennitt's ability to take a melancholy moment, or idea, or story and elevate it to something transcendently beautiful -- while still embracing the melancholy core *as* beautiful -- somehow digs powerfully deep into your soul. I feel it every time. The Old Ways I just rediscovered last year. Events led me to want to hear it again, and it was more gentle and powerful than I even remembered it being. And very healing. Dante's Prayer too. One thing I'd add to your list though is "The Lady of Shallott". Springtime is simply not springtime, until I have listened to that on a cool, bright, partly cloudy day. Which reminds me, I should start looking for those CD's!

Adam, if you ever get the chance to watch the parts of (or even better the complete) concert of her in the spanish Alhambra, you will get blown away by that incredible performance. It's one of the few concerts for that I would have given everything to be there, if I only had known early enough that it would happen ... sadly I learnt about years after the happening. (sorry for any grammar errors in my comment, I'm still learning english)

Wonderful selection and reaction. She is one of my favorites in world music. She has so many influences from her travels around the world, Celtic, middle eastern, etc. Please consider playing and reacting to my favorite - “The Mummers’ Dance”, where she plays the accordion. She is also proficient on harp and piano.

Cool choice for a reaction! What’s fascinating about Loreena is just how many genres and sub-genres she explores. Her catalogue can be broken down into traditional-sounding Celtic/Irish music, Middle Eastern music, and piano ballads, plus combinations of all three. But it’s also so much more. She describes her music as a form of “travel writing”, developed as she’s studied the history of the Celtic tribes from Europe through Asia and everywhere in between (thus the strong Middle Eastern influences as her albums progressed over the years). On top of that, she’ll write and compose haunting original songs (like this one), but also just as well adapt a centuries-old melody or poem to song, even from the likes of Shakespeare himself. Oh, and she also plays harp, piano, and accordion, is her own manager, and is the only artist on her own record label, 100% controlling her own career in all aspects from the beginning (record labels famously bowed to her wishes and terms when they offered to help with distribution when her career really started to take off). Her music truly takes you to another place, and she has a song for every mood. Want some Celtic ethereal peace? Courtyard Lullaby. Want to break your heart and put it back together? Dante’s Prayer. Want to bellydance? Marco Polo. Want an ancient Celtic/Eastern bonfire festival? All Souls Night. Want an Irish breakup by the ocean? The Old Ways. Want a slow, hypnotizing camel ride through the desert? The Gates of Istanbul. And those are all just individual examples out of her countless songs that take you to equally amazing times and places. Welcome to an amazing new musical world like no other! :)

Thanks for reacting to Loreena McKennitt. She is a long time favorite of mine. In retrospect, it isn't that surprising that you enjoyed this. You pretty much can't go wrong with a single track on this album. Each is excellent in its own way. Several of her songs from other albums, especially The Mummer's Dance, have been used in part on various movie trailers over the years, so you may hear bits that sound familiar. Along the lines of this kind of music I suspect you would like, if you haven't already heard them, would be Dead Can Dance. Tremendous amount of varied, traditional intruments from all over the world with lots of different influences.

YES, I am so here for this!! I bumped a comment awhile back that suggested Loreena McKennitt, and while I mainly stick to your Aurora and Wardruna reactions, "Mystic's Dream" came to mind as one you'd enjoy. So glad you did! As others have said, you really can't go wrong with any of _The Mask and the Mirror_ album; I'm highly partial to _The Book of Secrets_ , too which has a few of the popular next song requests in comments. "The Mummers' Dance" is a classic, more upbeat in general. "Full Circle" is stunning and soothing, "The Highwayman" introduced me to the poem and... pulls no punches, but that's why I love it. "The Bonny Swans" is a fascinating story that goes very fantasy. I also listen to Clannad, an Irish folk band (with Enya, in early years) and realized their song, "Two Sisters", was the same story, but without the fantasy elements.

I second all the calls to "Dead Can Dance", too. Anything from their _Toward The Within_ live album. Lisa Gerrard singing "The Wind That Shakes The Barley" (which Loreena has also sang) is absolutely chilling.

A song a lot of people are neglecting in the comments is her song Ancient Pines. It has no real lyrics, but it is transportive. Close your eyes while listening and it just pulls you somewhere else. It is soooo beautiful. Edit: she was the narrator and performed the main song in the first Tinkerbell movie, and also has a song "Bells of Christmas" that is used in The Santa Claus.

This comment might be a little late for you to read, but I hope you do, as I'm a long time, huge Loreena fan as her music captured my heart back in 94. I suggest listening to every song of hers, if you haven't already! Her music is based off of Celtic and Arabic songs and rhythms, hence the catchy drum beat. It blew me away hearing dumbeks with a harp and cello! She was asked to write the music for The Lord of the Rings, but turned it down as she is the owner of her recording career and was too busy. She did write and sing a song for the Tinkerbell movie. Please watch "The Movable Musical Feast". Loreena highlights her career and who she is and how she thinks. She's the most humbled musician I know. Nothing about Loreena reminds me of Enya. Maybe because when I listen to Loreena my mind, creativity, opens up and with Enya I just listen. Loreena makes the wheels in my head turn, turn so much I published a novel called, "Karmann Krist's Zylophila" which I'm intending to turn into a trilogy. The Highwayman song started a story in my head and all I could do was write it down. I reincarnated The Highwayman and his beloved Bess. I'm glad you have found Loreena and enjoy listening to her. Have a beautiful day!

I have read that this particular album Loreena McKennitt uses Middle Eastern influences in her music, and as I lover of such regions and Loreena's music, I hear the sound of the zills (or sagat - finger cymbal) as the higher pitch "ding" sound, as well as the Spanish castanets mixed over the drum beats. I think you've described it perfectly as her voice being enchanting while she tells us a story from what seems long ago. I am also a Pagan and have felt the call to create a ritual dance to this beautiful composition. And after listening to "Mystic's Dream" for over a decade...it still fills me with overpowering emotions every time I hear it. The timeless Gregorian chanting by the male voices, the instruments, Loreena's otherworldly singing, and the poetic lyrics...it's a musical work of art

Oh, nice reaction, she is great artist. :) From celtic music I love french breton artist Cécile Corbel, she made music in genres like folk, folk pop, sometimes more pop, I love her version of song "Brian Boru". She is singer and she play on celtic harp. Celtic music is very beautiful, the most I like song "Siúil a Rún", beautiful folk song. But my favourite version of this song is by japanese artist Kokia, she is incredible, you should listen her, my favourite song by her is "Il Mare Dei Suoni", especially live version from History tour 2012.

Wow! That was a trip, Adam. Enjoyable piece of art. I really appreciate your comments. I am an old man, 70, who is a huge Morissette fan. I think you need to get into KZ Tandingan , another incredible Philippine artist and performer. Try her 2018 SInger performance of Rolling in the Deep to get started. You can thank me later.

This isn't the music I normally listen to, but I have fond memories of it being played in the car as a kid , drifting to sleep on the way home from visiting friends. It is quite beautiful.

Listen to her entire catalog, but her album "The Visit" is a good place to start, and was her first big album. Also her Christmas album is the best.

My first exposure to Lorena was at St Lawrence Market in Toronto Canada. She was a busker there promoting her tapes. Yes, tapes, per CD. I have them and every CD, seen her 5 times and loved her wiry every note musical and vocal….

Love Loreena! The Highwayman is a track I often listen too to wind down after a night of DJing. That would be my suggestion, but really all of her music is lovely.

Her work was used in the movie ' The Mists of Avalon' and takes one on a journey to a time of mysticism. Live at the Alhambra h is enchanting
