There are parts in this series that I do actually like Emily and Richard, but there are plenty of parts where I really don't like them, especially Emily. She thinks she knows what will make Lorelai happy when she doesn't even know her. If she tried to actually get to know her daughter then she would see that it's Luke that would make Lorelai happy not Christopher. But Emily is too much of snob to see how incredible Luke is! This was a huge scene for Lorelai and Emily. With Lorelai graduating college and then finally opening up the Dragonfly Inn Emily finally started to see her as an adult in her professional life but she still sees her as that 16 year old girl who went and got pregnant and is running away from social obligations. I think this scene was the beginning of Emily seeing Lorelai as a capable adult socially too, which obviously culminates in season 7 when Chris and Lorelai's marriage is going downhill and for the first time Emily sees why Lorelai made the decisions she did. This was also ironic because in the episode Lorelai says she's worried about saying the wrong thing to Rory cause she doesn't want Rory to run away and here we see Emily show the same worry but instead compensating by being overbearing and controlling, and in the end both end up being the wrong decisions because they're both so far out of balance so neither Lorelai nor Rory had good support systems.

Max wasn't better he picked a fight when Lorelai gets stressed out. I never saw Max comfort Lorelai without starting a fight. Luke maybe be grumpy but he was so kind and loving to Lorelai. Tell me what did Max do for Lorelai that Luke didn't do for her.
