My grandmothers name was Ada Lorena. She was born in 1902, and most likely named after this song.

Although it be true that this song was very popular during the War Between the States, it actually dates back to 1857. It was written jointly by a married couple.

The tune reminds me of the church hymn "What a Friend We Have in Jesus".

Unrequited Love is always moving and nostalgic. I'm thinking the "The Hills of Shiloh" is far more evoking of this tragedy. A poor lost sole searching the hills for years for her lover.

very fine, thanks Jim. First heard the song from John Hartford. A good song is like a time capsule.

Is this singer a young Bill Hayes, husband of Susan Seaforth Hayes? Looks like him!

I'm afraid I don't know he was referred to as a singer (no proper name) in the video that was featuring the army chorus in archive.org

In the South it used to just be called "The War". AKA The Late Unpleasntness; the War of Northern Aggression; War Between the States; etc., etc.

This is a Bill Hayes. His name actually was in a video that mentioned above. On a 1:06. I think his name should be in a title or at least in the description of this video.
