flo abr the DLC is almost always the best content. Of all four games with DLC, ashes of ariandel is the only one that isn't amazing, and even that has Sister Friede to make up for it. But yeah, while I'm willing to accept that midir isn't objectively the best boss (compared to Gael or Orphan for example), he's my personal favourite and a good contender for the top spot regardless.

*Some explanation:* Dark Souls 3 bosses typically have 2 phases, the second phase being much more intense which the tracks typically reflect. So the first and second phase need to be able to loop independently until the player drops the boss to its HP threshold.

1st phase is showing how he is on the outside, he's strong, but mentally broken, he's not afraid to die. But when 2nd hits you know Midir doesn't want to go insane, he's afraid. Afraid because he cannot control his actions due to the dark eating away at his mind. Notice how in the fight he stands still after every attack. He's still fighting his insanity, it just takes almost full control in 2nd phase

Darkeater Midir is every violinist’s dream/nightmare (those high notes....xD). I’m sorta kidding, but as a newer violinist...it’s on my list of top ten things to learn to play efficiently. The sound and particular notes are just too unique and beautiful. Anyway, here’s another vote for Slave Knight Gael ✅ Btw: When selecting DS tracks, you may want to choose the base album versions if you wanna just hear the original song that’s not looped. The album will be automatically generated on KZbin or else on Spotify/Pandora. I can recommend it as they don’t leave anything out except the loop and the fading out. This one looped both phases twice as you heard, but I don’t know...you didn’t seem to mind. It’s up to you of course. I listen to the base versions when I’m just analyzing or learning to play the songs and that’s why I recommend it. Looped versions are still fun af because you get to hear your potentially favorite parts more than once.

@@AtlasBenighted Yeah, those are both good suggestions. However, I would probably recommend the Topic channel for the album versions if you don’t want the loops. Great video! A few points on things you mentioned: Comparing the feel of the soundtrack to a Greek epic is a very good analogy to the events of the game. To summarize, the world is dying and you are on a quest to sacrifice yourself to extend it. Currently your character is in the ringed city, where the lands of the world draw closer (literally) and come together. The city itself is a kind of prison the gods made for humanity. Darkeater Midir is an enormous Dragon (Dragons are integral to the dark souls story), who was commanded to guard the city against the Dark by Lord Gywn. Eventually, he succumbed to the Dark, and became corrupted. Earlier in the game you encounter him and knock him into the pit where you fight him. While the song plays, you fight one of the most powerful beings in the Souls universe, a being of legend decended from the oldest age, before the Gods even came to be. It's a intense and difficult fight of a man against a titan. Also, you mentioned a martial feeling. While this can apply to much of Dark souls, it is especially fitting here as Midir was the Guardian and Warden of the Ringed City, a soldier to watch over them. But now he is corrupted and attacks any who approach. Speaking of which, you mentioned how the music made you feel. To me this always evoked a desperate, clawing struggle for survival against him. It also evoked the corruption in its shrill noted and pitched choir, which you can see in the black/purple crystals and dust you can see coating and falling from Midir. That beat in the background told you to not stop, to keep moving, that you were never safe unless you did not hesitate. Midir's soundtrack, while not my favorite (that belongs to Gael's Theme), is excellent and I love the feeling and drive it brings to the encounter. You did very well in the analysis of this song.

Hey Atlas, great video. Just wanted to note that this exact track you listened to was an extended version which looped at some points, it actually has a end where it doesnt just fade out! I've always thought this song was about Midir the dragon rather than the main character. But your interpretation is quite good as Midir was raised as a slave basically by those who slaughtered his own kind and he kept to his duty even after everything fell apart, wounded and tainted with darkness. You are actually not required to kill him but there is an NPC that tells you to do it so that he can rest in peace after an eternity of pain.

Few people actually listen to their soundtracks, unfortunately. You should react to the Epilogue of Dark Souls III, it's the most emotional track of the game (probably of the entire trilogy). The fact that represents the very end of Dark Souls gives to it a powerfull impact to the player. Dark Souls III is the end of everything. The Epilogue has a particular taste of nostalgia, resignation. It lulls you because is very warm and peaceful and it's like a sunshine through the apocalyctic scenery, It'almost like you awake from a long dream

Never realized the heartbeat, but makes sense considering midir's circunstance. In this fight, you found him unconcious in the pit where he was droped from the top of the tower in the picture after losing a fight with the player. Midir is also going mad from his eternal duty of eating the darkness and the pain from his wounds. it is kind of sad, cause midir is in lore an ally to the player's cause (of stoping the dark age), and the player is only trying to put him out of his misery. Midir is one of the last 2 bosses (you can do them in any order), but midir is considered the stronger one of the two

To be honest, my favorite Dark Souls track is the Main Menu theme of Dark Souls III. Yes there is little storytelling, it's not as depressing as fighting the final boss of Dark Souls 1 who is nothing but a shadow of his former himself, turned into ashes, but on the pure musical standpoint, it's my favorite by far.

So my boi Midir got a Diamond :D I loved your breakdown. And you were almost right. In fact this fight is one of the last bosses in the game. Moreover yes YES, this fight comes after a lot of battle but not just for you... but for both of you, so both Midir and yourself (actually Midir a lot more). That's why it is so perfect. However I suggest you to react to "Lorian and Lothric" OST. One of the best of soulsborne series. This is my top ten in random orther if not specify. I'm not an expert, I'm more a Common listener so my list will be pretty classic, but I wanted to share it. 1) Slave Knight Gael. The masterpiece between the masterpiece. Three perfect tracks one better than the other. Perfection is an insult to this ost if you want to describe it. 2) Cleric Beast. Simply the best soundtrack in BB in my opinion. That Soundtrack IS Bloodborne. - Darkeater Midir -Ludwig -Champion Gundyr -Gehrman -Lorian and Lothric -Yhorm -Soul of Cinder -Laurence

Really cood video, a suggestion I have is to maybe after listening to only the track listen to it again but during the actual boss fight, the way how the music connects with the rhythm of the boss attacks and phases is top notch. In midir's case you were talking how it starts reaaly fast and than it kinda slows down, thay because when you enter the arena he does a crazy charge attack where he lunges acroos the arena spitting flames and swipping his arms erratically, then the 1st phase music is more rhythmic as he used mostly melee attacks, the almost pause between phases is when he stands still and buffs himself with the dark into an explosion where the 2nd phase begins and the music goes insane when he spews out his super combo with the laser and then it slows down again has this laser attacks leaves him exhausted and the end notes mark when you finallly defeat him. I haven't played DS3 in over a year and just by listening to the track I can play out the whole fight in my head, this just shows how memorable it is

so about that "heartbeat giving the human touch" Midir is a dragon, personally raised and owned by Lord gwyn (the zeus of the dark souls universe) raised to consume all darkness surrounding the ringed city, place where all the humans lived however, people seem to think that by "consuming the darkness" it means stopping the spread of the abyss (the flood in halo). That's not what it means at all, at least not completely. It actually means eating all humans that venture outside the ringed city, effectively confining them to it. So where does the dark type attacks come from during the boss fight? it's because humans hold a portion of the plot of the series "the dark soul". the dark soul is actually our emotions, our sanity, our will to live. when you lose the dark soul, you become a zombier- zombie (humans always respawn in dark souls, making them undead).

The funny thing about your story is that Darkeater Midir is indeed intended to be the very last and greatest challenge of not only DS3 but the entire series. It isn't actually a part of the main path but a well hidden fight you have to proactively search for and it is entirely focused on challenging the player on a mechanical level as opposed to Gael who is the final boss of the story and has more focus on spectacle and theming.

I'm liking these videos. Though one thing I want to point out is some of the soundtracks you're listening to have repeated sections in them and aren't the true I guess complete song, they're artificially extended by cycling the track (this is done in games because well it'd be awkward if the song ends in the middle of a fight). I would recommend playing the soundtracks that don't cycle to experience it's true form, like for instance the Laurence one didn't cycle and the midir one did. I know it may be hard since finding the right one that doesn't cycle may ruin the point of a first reaction but it's just a tip. To find the ones that don't cycle I recommend either Yuka kitamuras topic channel where you can find the complete songs (plus she composed most of them bless her) or dudewhereismyspoon's channel. Otherwise keep it up dude.
