Pretty sure they amputated Picard's hand and forearm (or at the very least severely mangled it) in installing the implant on his arm. But as they showed in DS9 with Nog's leg, Starfleet medical science is definitely advanced enough to replace limbs. The only reason LaForge had his visor was because he was congenitally blind and Trek humanity still has a major hangup with genetic engineering thanks to Khan Noonien Singh and pals.

The idea Janeway slowly began to become completely ruthless and would let worlds to save her crew that she's so consumed by her signal drive to get voyager home that she put her boot of the arse of time itself to get her way is interesting. It's only a pitty that the show writers didn't lean into it. As I've started to think that a good arc would have being have Janeway fall feather and feather from the ideals of star fleet while Chakotay becomes more moral. That he is the only one that can rane her in. Not that he starts drinking the star fleet cool aid but he eather retains his morality or becomes the more moral of he and Janeway.

@Allhailthesith5 жыл бұрын
Interesting! Can you explain further?
@schwarzerritter57245 жыл бұрын
@@Allhailthesith The whole point of having a hive mind is so that the Borg do not need a leader. A single leader can make mistakes and the Queen has made mistakes. She is relative easy to outsmart. You could argue a specialized unit can think more creatively than the Collective, but the Borg can temporarily give a drone more autonomy if a task requires it, like they did with Locutus or Seven of Nine. So, at best, the Queen is useless. Furthermore, glitches in the Collective are not unprecedented, there is Unimatrix Zero for example.

I'm honestly a bit iffy on that last point. Janeway and company were assimilated for a New York Minute whereas Seven was a drone ever since she was a little girl. Picard wasn't assimilated for all that long, but he recalled what he did, namely killing over 11,000 people, with traumatic clarity. Neither of those really apply to Janeway and company, and I'm reasonably sure that Tuvok succumbing was purely for suspense. And, even though this does allude to the hand-waving you mentioned earlier, the suppressant seemed to hold except in Tuvok's case, so the psychological effects might've been mitigated. You're not the only one to complain, however. I remember seeing a fanfic where, in a bit of role reversal, Seven had to help the trio readjust to being non-Borg. Maybe you'd like to see it and/or pin it as post-Unimatrix-Zero-maybe-done right? Just a thought.
@venus_envy5 жыл бұрын
That sounds cool.
@shibolinemress89135 жыл бұрын
Maybe it was different for Janeway and Torres because they went in willingly and were never actually assimilated. While Tuvok also went willingly, he was briefly assimilated. Picard was in another league entirely because not only was he abducted and assimilated against his will, but as Locutus he destroyed nearly the entire Federation fleet and killed many thousands of people. Logically, he should have spent at least the entire 4th season recovering from that, and we'd have had a season with Riker in temporary command, which could have been quite good. Sadly, we didn't get real story arcs like that until DS9 and again in ENT S3.

I can't understand why the borg would care that a tiny, tiny fraction of the borg could escape to their own virtual world during their regeneration cycle. I mean, it doesn't affect their waking life any, they can't remember it while they're "awake" and it was shown that if they become free of thought while they were awake and away from the collective (survival instinct season 6:2), they couldn't care less How petty is the borg queen that she gives two Fs about Unimatrix Zero Akso I was always fascinated that Voyager found so many drones who were assimilated at the Battle of Wolf 359, a women. Riley Frasier in Unity season 3:17, Mirika Wilkarah, a Bajoran in Survival Instinct season 6:2 and Laura from Unimatrix Zero 1 & 2 season 6:26 and 7:1 That borg ship was destroyed so how did they end up all the way on the other side of the galaxy
@Shapes_Quality_Control5 жыл бұрын
dragonweyr44 For your first point it’s common in collectivist philosophies to be almost autistic about the disorder a few individuals could potentially bring. Because someone can do something is license enough for a collectivist to purge the heretical element even at the cost of thousands, because remember the individual life does not matter as long as the collective survives.
@Shapes_Quality_Control5 жыл бұрын
As for your second point it’s possible the cube launched probes or spheres that returned the new drones to the collective for study. It’s not unheard of for a Cube to do this.
@dragonweyr445 жыл бұрын
@@Shapes_Quality_Control That was my guess that the cube from Wolf 359 launched a ship back to the Delta Quadrant but for one thing, Enterprise D never said they detected a ship leaving the battlefield AND wouldn't the newly created drones stay there to assist in assimilating Earth rather than immediately heading "home" as soon as possible? We saw them assimilate a planet before on the Voyager episode Dark Frontier and none of the drones left that area until the entire planet's population was assimilated
@dragonweyr445 жыл бұрын
@@Shapes_Quality_Control The thing that concerns me about the first point is that we saw in the Voyager episode Collective that when a cube was disabled in the Voyager episode Collective, 5 drone children survivors of a disaster tried to contact the collective to "rescue" them but they were deemed irrelevant and left to fend for themselves while others were "rescued" when they sent a distress signal in Survival Instinct. These same drones, when they were separated from the collective by 7 of 9's actions were left to themselves. The same thing happens in Unity in which tens of thousands were freed from the collective So that theory is kind of hit or miss in my opinion
@Shapes_Quality_Control5 жыл бұрын
dragonweyr44 In regards to your first comment consider two things. First the distance from the collective. The later case involved an entire homogenous species population located in close proximity to Borg space so resources and risk required to secure an intact specimen is minimal compared to securing new specimens from a variety of species spread out across a vast swath of space with little more then a single cube a galaxy away to work with. As far as your second comment goes we don’t know the exact calculations or rationalizations that went into the collectives decisions in each of these instances but also consider that if the Borg are representative of collectivist regimes in real life then what the Trekkie might see as a narrative inconsistency is actually an honest look inside how these regimes function. I always likened the Borg to Communism. A group in search of the perfect utopia of harmonious forced equality that through its self assured moral superiority is blissfully unaware of its own inadequacies and frankly hypocrisies. The reason I see Voyager as superior in this regard to most of the spinoffs is that it remembered to try and stick true to the human themes. These creatures and aliens and technology are not ends unto themselves but devices with which to reflect the human condition.

Hah this Time you didnt get me ;) Off topic, i believe that the queen was created as a direct reaction of the experiences with locutus and the species, while at first it should help straighten up processes, her entety grew to powerfull and in the end "overthrew" the hivemind, forcing her will upon it. The Borg Queen isn’t just an Avatar of the collective. "I bring order to chaos" Borg Queens are highly intelligent gifted woman from certain species who excel at multitasking and decision making. They retain some free will, at least enough to take decisions on the behalf of the entire collective. With little to no opposition. They are rarely or even never seen outside of Borg space and usually surrounded by an Armada of cubes and spheres. To me they sound a lot like a proxy server. They are there to maintain and facilitate the connection between different drones. This would explain how the Queen can shut off a drone from the collective. But also why if they go too far their connection get severed. She’s like a living wifi…maybe their pointy head is actually bc they use it like an antenna As for the other matter, I would put all the inefficient decisions made by the Queen on the account of politics and pride. Any Borg trying to assimilate you will say the same…they aren’t there to hurt you but to make you perfect. To add to their perfection. They believe they are doing what is right and at some level I believe sometimes they want to prove it. Especially to individuals who truly challenge that notion. Probably as a way to show others that THEY are right. Resistance is futile. Finally, idk how much canon it is but Seven of Nine in Star Trek Online created what is called "the cooperative" which is a voluntary and free collective for disconnected Borgs who still wish to be part of a hive mind. Bc as it was pointed out by many ppl throughout ST entire history. There is beauty in the voice of a billion minds united.

I mean, if it were me, and I were in Janeway's place where the queen started to blow up Borg ships, I'd sit there and let her. After all, the Federation is AT WAR with the Borg, you can't help all of these people who were assimilated, you can't save them all and bring them back to individuality, so why not let the queen wipe out her own army? What about those she can't hear on Unimatrix 01? Does that mean if Janeway had held out eventually the queen would have blown up the unicomplex? I'm just saying, I'd let the borg destroy themselves self destructing entire ships.

The queen is a critical flaw and weakness in the collective .

The thing that pissed me off why didn’t chakoty Delete janeway’s etc command codes ???? As the Borg used tuvoks to lower voyagers shields. Why!!!!!!!!! Would you keep there codes active Also the Borg couldn’t assimilate janeway fully as she was injected with a modified version of the nano virus, the Borg didn’t know how to over come it they where trying for weeks and the queen said to a drone at the very start of the episodes “it could take years to identify everyone” so she didn’t know how to “ neutralise” them Also I think you’re forgetting the queen activated the tactical cubes self destruct voy and the sphere didn’t destroy it

I had to stop myself from including that nonsense

Lore Reloaded actually that’s a point you made about tuvok the virus wore off meaning somehow Vulcan physiology destroys it..... the queen should have jumped on this analysed his immunity! In order to replicate it and spread it through the others.

maybe they didnt wand to put mulgrew in tons of prothetics while shoving her in a phone booth. plus it was probably cheaper.

Sure..but even if thats the reason.. you can write your way out of it as well

You can say, " their deaths are on you." Or, "the blood is on your hands." Saying something doesn't make it so.

When I saw this two-parter originally, I believe I’d have said it was one of the weakest, in all of VOY. I think much of what you mention here backs that up. I don’t take a very cynical view to Borg episodes in VOY, as many fans do. But this was one that threw everything at the wall - even literally getting the Delta Flyer destroyed - to achieve thematically and dramatically very little.

Humanity's assimilation seriously screwed up the borg in general. Way to many flaws added to the collective.
