I studied in the Mormon religion when I was young. Met and got to know quite a few. There are a lot of good people who are Mormons but there's something about the religion that I can only describe as cult like. Whatever it is, it seems to breed a lot of dysfunction and toxicity in families. Whatever was the causation, the basic personality of both Chad and Lori is narcissistic in nature. It's the dynamic that created the setting for them to go down the rabbit hole. Their narcissism and religious fanaticism was a perfect storm that allowed them to be okay with murder. People who have NPD lack empathy and only consider their needs as important. What a perfect justification. People they see as a threat or baggage turn into zombies who's body needs to be destroyed. Makes sense if you are a sociopath.
@TheInstigator1026 Жыл бұрын
Mormonism was certainly the beginning of this. Members are indoctrinated from birth. Also, they talk about the last days a whole lot. In fact, their full name is The Church Of Jesus Christ Of LATTER-DAY Saints. Later-Day meaning- this is the end of times, by apocalypse. The wrath of Jesus Christ, of which, Mormons believe they will be spared.

@@milagiganticurchod6138 it’s the magical thinking that concerns those from the outside looking in. I knew nothing about the religion until I made friends with some JW ladies. I got interested in looking into many religious groups considered under a broad blanket of “Christian”. The way the Mormon church started is absolutely startling to me with golden tablets that were never seen, then stolen, then returned, being read out of a hat….. It teaches generation after generation to literally no question anything you’re told. Not by God, but by man, and that’s alarming. I am a non religious Christian. Every church I’ve gone to have their own weird things that make no sense. I’m Catholic by birth so there’s Limbo, Purgatory, confessions, etc,. I was baptized Pentecostal as a teen by choice. There was speaking in tongues, a love of money, no make up and only dresses, music so loud my 6 yr old sister cried, and a good amount of segregation even. I attended a Church of Christ where literally I think they sang the whole time… I studied the Bible with the JW women. There’s no Christian holidays observed nor birthdays and other very nonsensical things. I’ve worked at an Amish plant nursery here for a short time. My cousin-in-law is a pastor for a church that seemed pretty normal… until we went to a formal dinner and there was calm almost ballroom style dancing. That’s where we found out in their religion you’re not allowed to dance, not even with your spouse of 40 years lol. But of all those religions, Mormons are the strangest. Even the most integrated into society seem disconnected with society. They have their own words for things that make no sense, because words already exist for whatever they are talking about. And then Joseph smith… Lord help me lol And the Angel Moroni? Then let’s not talk about the groups that practice polygamy. Yes I know it’s been denounced, but the founder sure believed in it lol… But you know the one thing that got me? The hot drinks thing…. And hearing more and more stories from families within the church, I started noticing that there weren’t many acts of kindness. There was no service or humbling to the lowest of God’s ppl. Much in the way Jesus did. It’s all self a absorbed culture. Everyone sees or speaks to Jesus or angels, everyone has a book, or podcast, or business, or holds important positions in the church. All of those positions have titles with prestige and ppl want that title/prestige because it makes them feel important. And conference after conference… In todays society we are taught to be more accepting of things, but for me… when someone told me they can’t have hot drinks, but coffee was fine… I lost all respect for them, just as I lost respect for my family member when they wouldn’t dance with their wife.

@@milagiganticurchod6138 I respect LDS and other beliefs, whatever makes one happy and doesn’t hurt anyone is fine to me. If one wants to believe in Joseph Smith, one may do so wholeheartedly imo. Please don’t be disappointed though, the LDS religion is considered a high-demand religion with strong behavioural guidelines and control mechanisms. This aspect in combination with strong hierarchical structure and the concept of personal revelation from god can enable religious-authoritarian or so-called cult-like dynamics in a group. Also, Mormons can tend to be a little shut-off from other worldviews by the LDS Church who proclaims their “one true church”, where members can spend a lot of their time and don’t even need friends outside church; Mormons can live in a fully Mormon bubble, a kind of fully immersive experience which many other flavours of orthodox religions also can offer. In any religious environment that asks as much obedience as the LDS church through scripture and that tells its members not to question their living (!?) prophets, I would proceed with extra caution and probably also refrain from joining; that is just me, personally.

I have thought that Chad had low self esteem and was basically lazy. He conned Tammy into being the bread winner for a large family so he could write his little books that fed his self esteem. However, he was a con man and he knew it. When he met Lori, she had read his books and had stars in her eyes. It was the perfect opportunity for him to pursue a fantasy life based off of Julie Rowe's quasi LDS beliefs. He had a hot new chick on his arm and was ready to live his best life. The worst of Lori and Chad's character traits created these heinous events. Both of them allowed their darkest thoughts to manifest. Eventually Lori would have worn Chad out with her narcisstic neediness and she would tire of him. Just as fast as these relationships ignite do they wither to nothingness. Lori and Chad are sad and pitiful people.

I think you nailed it. They conned each other, and the reality of their faults and deficiencies would have become apparent to them both soon enough, had they not been arrested. Lori declared herself a leader of 144K when she met Melanie Gibb BEFORE she met Chad. So I think Lori and Chad were a catalyst for each other. Their relationship was toxic in the worst way because they facilitated each other. Lori was murderous before Chad as evidenced by her own words during a talk at Melanie Gibb’s house and she watched Alex’ attack on Joe Ryan in Texas. Let’s hope the sentence is life without parole for them both.

I could never agree with the actions of either Lori or Chad. Lori had an unstable upbringing. Chad may have convinced his followers of this bazaar belief system which allows them to murder even their own spouses and children to get payouts from insurance companies and marry the person of choice etc. It's so sad. From a lot of commentary I've listened to by lawyers and court reporters it seems that this trial came pretty close to being one that could/should be studied as an example of how a trial conducted by a fully prepared judge and lawyers and witnesses who were absolutely on point. When the trial began I was really critical of the judge's decision not to have cameras in the court room but as the trial progressed I saw the wisdom of that decision--IMO. The prosecution team kept the momentum going amazingly well. And bless those defense lawyers! I was a secretary in a Public Defender's Office years ago and know what good guys they are and those two deserve medals! They did the very best they could in a very difficult situation and with an impossible client. What Dr. John is saying about Lori and Chad really believing that the world is ending eminently is what I’ve been saying… It explains why Lori is so nonplussed about anything going on around her. She doesn’t picture been incarcerated for decades; she thinks they’re all going to be swept up in the next moment, or the moment after that, or the moment after that… She and Chad probably anticipated it happening around the time of their honeymoon. Doomsdayers are scary people because of their disconnect to ANYthing within the confines of what most of us consider normal; If they are not going to be here (2nd coming or whatEVER reason), it doesn’t really matter what they do, because they won’t be around to have to answer for it. I know one of those kind and though they are not a murderer, I have considered the possibility for years. Lori wasn’t a killer her whole life either, but now….she’s STILL a dangerous person.

If this case has told us anything, it’s that relationships are not always what they seem, and it’s vital that those with questions, including those who witness or suspect otherwise, should speak out and be available to those needing a way out. Happy Mother’s Day Lauren. You deserve hugs and love every day. With love and eye balls from Australia 🇦🇺.

Such a great insight, it is so important to have someone who listens to victims and believes them. Difficult situations can arise when a person cannot help themselves anymore and requires support, but it needs listening by environment to alleviate situation and/or prevent further harm. It was so hard to see how Lori lied and manipulated to prevent Charles from getting help, really heartbreaking how tragedy enfolded ;( to me, Lori was criminally genius to use the bias against men as fathers in custody cases, Lori was alleging an affair against him, too. I believe, Charles had no chance that law enforcement would listen to him instead of “loving mother by all accounts” Lori, her evil genius in manipulation are ALMOST admirable, wow.

As this part of the story comes to a close, I wanted to say, how much I've appreciated your growth and openness. You always conducted brilliant interviews, and people trusted you enough to come forward, when they wouldn't have to anyone else. I came to this, not as much of a "true crime" devote, as one who has been questioning, why people believe what they do. Especially during the pandemic, I began to notice many - stuck in their homes, looking at screens - seemed to fall prey to wild, fantastical beliefs, sometimes affecting families, communities and politics, in very destructive ways. I was raised by a mother, who was the queen of magical thinking and a father, the king of practical, logical, materialistic thinking. I have direct experience of seeing auras or watching my mother shew away clouds, premonitions that came to pass, and yet I can explain all of those in terms, even my father would understand. So I think I get your theory of Chad's world. But I want to add this: I believe Chad may have begun writing books about the end times, using his imagination, akin to an LDS version of the (LaHaye/Jenkins) Left Behind series, bestsellers in the 90s and 2000ies. I imagine him thinking: Why couldn't I write a series like they did - but for Mormons? They'll make me famous. And the movies...." And then he met Suzanne Freeman and Julie Rowe. And I see him thinking: Seems like there's more interest and credibility when you have had an NDE or 2... So he gradually began to refer to his fiction as visions. And his justification: his NDEs - whether he had any or not - it doesn't matter. We all tell stories about ourselves; kind of - an elevator pitch biography. Whether some of it's inflated or not, it becomes habit. And we introduce ourselves, sell ourselves, to the world like that so much, that we don't even remember what parts may be untrue: we even begin to live into it. Like John said (perfectly) the Accidental Profit. To end - I also want to thank you for raising the question of Joe Ryan's death (and Alex's too). I'm not ready to speculate, but surely think there should be a deeper dive into their untimely deaths. LE has access to LollyTime and Lori4Style iCloud accounts - I'm sure they could at least do a cursory search for Lori's movement around the time Joe would have died. BTW He also had life ins., which Lori cashed in on - not Tylee. And if there were any communication with Zulema around the time of Alex's passing. I guess the prosecutors needed to keep some evidence out of the court so as not to sully certain witnesses. But maybe more will come out in Chad's trail. I see him trying to cast a shadow on Melanie Gibb's testimony, which could potentially reveal more. I mean, didn't anyone one ask Lori whatever happened to that husband you were going to kill?

I’ve just reached the end of this Livestream from the nosebleed section of the Replay Crew… I have MANY thoughts and feelings swirling around my mind and body and at this point I’m not able to succinctly express them or pare them down for comment on a thread where people’s time and attention is limited… But, regarding the Conclusion of this Replay I need to say that YOU TWO ARE SOOOOOO ADORABLE AND CUTE!!!! 🥰 And I LOVE watching you both role model intimate emotional openness and vulnerability in a public space ♥️😍💎 Imo, we need more people like you both role modelling healthy relationship intimacy and showing what this looks like because not enough people know what it is and how it looks and this keeps personal growth held in the bondage of Fear… We need THIS normalised!! Thank you 🙏🏼 💎🫶🏻

I have always seen it like how DR. John explained some of it: When a person experiences things ( ie. Chad almost drowning), then the memoery re-arranges things in your mind thru experiences later in life, I believe when he started going to those conventions and meetings, his book sales were based on fiction.( he did an interview stating such), then as different ppl started talking around him about " NDE's" and the like, he saw a potential for bigger sales for his books. Then he starts being asked to " speak" at those meetings and conventions. This is ego boost. Ego boost to a man who is fantasy monded to start with ( ie. his references to being like harry potter, going back under his little box under the stairs. The moment he thinks Lori os attracted to him. On the flip side, Lori's fascination with him is " he is an author", and all the other women are enamoured with him, so he became the "competition", she ised on him exactly what she used on all men in her path over the years: Her looks and ability to manipulate through and by her looks! I honestly believe it was the ppl who began gathering around them, listening to them, who fell for what chad and Lori began selling( their sell was for the " attention"), this, the power and control they began feeling they had over those around them grew to the point, chad and Lori began a power struggle between the two, because Lori was NOT in it because OF Chad, she was in it for the power and attention they were getting. When I heard the texts where he was telling her she would lose her protection if she didnt listen to him, he felt threatened of losing HER attention she gave him! We have to remember, there is more evidence that we werent able to see or know about, than what we learned in this trial. I am sure, in the next few trials we will find out MICH more about ithers involved, and more planning and evidence. Zulema didnt get " immunity" for what she testified to in Lori's trial! I am sorry! There is MoRE to this story than we know right now! Sadly, there are ppl who can believe something just enough, to justify killing children! I think this case will teach us, evil comes out in ppl in many forms, but in the end, evil is just that.... evil !

We have to remember that in the USA, the court is not designated to adjudicate religion. What it adjudicates is the harm that is done to others. Anything else confounds the legal issues. Addressing blasphemous religiosity belongs in the arena of the church. They can excommunicate them.

Thank you for asking Dr John to touch base with Colby. I’m also concerned about his ability to deal with the finality of Lori’s guilty verdict. He’s forced to face the reckoning of what his mother and Chad destroyed when they committed these crimes, even though he had nothing to do with them.

There are so many things about these people that seem oddly familiar to me, minus the murders thankfully. My LDS BIL had many similarities to Chad. He fancied himself as a more spiritual church member due to his revelations and visions and closeness to the “spirit”. He didn’t claim to be a prophet or write books, but his personality disorders (borderline,narcissism) caused him to manipulate people using these supposed “ gifts.”End times thinking and Julie Rowe prepper following were common among him and his family and friends. His antics created a lot of chaos and trauma in the family. The line between evil and mental illness can sometimes be difficult to discern.
@elizabethh1111 Жыл бұрын
I am curious, do you think the reason why Lori was not upset about her children dying as well as not being upset about the guilty verdict is because she still believes in it all so profoundly?
@TheInstigator1026 Жыл бұрын
She's all in, believing she's saved them, spiritually speaking.
@deborah7164 Жыл бұрын
Yes. I think she truly believes her delusions. She wanted what she wanted, which did boil down to sex, money & power
@carolmilatz5648 Жыл бұрын
@@deborah7164I think the prosecution was really smart in using that theory. They made the pieces fit. They left out the pieces that didn't fit. They also knew how to use drama to affect the guilty verdict. For instance time and time and time again showing the pictures of the dead children and the pieces of Tylee too great effect.

Justice allowed JJ to fly out of that grave in his little super hero pjs to rock guilty verdicts. I wished the trials hadn't separated. Both convicted now meant the children could have been returned to their families for burial. So long in bringing them home must be so difficult for their families.
