Thanks for sharing. I have seen the pre-electrification pictures of 1980’s but never knew the vertical alignment of this line. What the Nohabs did back then must have been spectacular. This in combination with the mechanical signals (candelabras) which were well known by themselves. Both are gone. 25kV and ETCS level 1.

Fascinating contrasts here, thank you! At our first French signal 2:07:30 presumably our stop of nearly 3 minutes is to reconfigure the onboard signalling setup - would a newer loco, such as Vectron, allow you to do this on the move? ETCS balises are certainly very visible from this point onwards, what level ETCS is running and what help is it giving the driver? This whole area has seen much conflict over more than a century and the need to swap to right-handed running 2:47:00 is part of the legacy of that - it's a strong argument for the benefit of cab views such as yours, thanks for sharing this rich history with us \m/
@jamestappin4741 Жыл бұрын
I assume the switch to right-hand running is where the railway was built by the Germans in the 1870-1918 period when Thionville was part of the German Empire. The Left - right split is much more even on the railways than the roads.

Very enjoyable ride along yet found one aspect of this trip very interesting was that so many onetime train stations along this route seemed to have been stopped being used in and around the 1984 time-period. Many of onetime train stations operated for a century or more but closed in 1984, seems if rail industry back 84 was going through a period of consolidation by closing unprofitable stops, just found it intriguing that it was center around 1984, or if it was a governmental edict that forced it?🤔🤔🙄
@lorirocks777 Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I assume there might've been some kind of reform that involved cutting costs. Train systems were probably running on autopilot with the government absorbing all the losses. There were many unprofitable railways operating during the 1900's (and still many today).. and I guess it was just a matter of time - sad as it may be.
@richardlong3745 Жыл бұрын
@@lorirocks777 Thank you for taking the time to give me you're thoughts on this matter. It just intrigued me as you passed-by onetime operating train stations is how many ceased operations in and around 1984, thank you once again for taking the time to reply to me.

@@richardlong3745 Hi Richard. 1984 was the year of implementation of the so-called "IC-IR" plan at SNCB/NMBS. BY this plan, the schedules were totally (really totally...) changed with introduction of new "IC" (Intercity, as you may guess) and "IR" (Interregio) routes. Those last finally disappeared being replaced either by IC or "L" (Local) trains, and with "P" (Peak) trains still operating nowadays. Those new schedules were replacing the "good old" "semi-direct" and "omnibus" trains, complemented by "direct" trains, most of the time international trains (Belgium was crossed by a flow from Paris to Amsterdam, but also from Paris to North/Eastern countries like the Nord Express (Paris-Copenhagen) or the Ost-West Express (Paris-Moscow with USSR coaches), while having also an flow from Brussels to Switzerland and Italy, former Yugoslavia, Austria; most of those trains disappeared being replaced by Thalys PBKA, German ICE's Brussels- Frankfurt and Eurostar's Brussels-London). At the same 1984 period, many stops/stations were closed all over in Belgium just for cost/attendance reasons.

@@philippeguillaume7413 Thank you, I really find information like this very fascinating because it shows how much thought goes into making keeping a industry profitable yet responsive to customers needs, must have been allot of turmoil when at these things were taking place for the riders and train routes when all this was happening.
@philippeguillaume7413 Жыл бұрын
@@richardlong3745 There was, indeed. Now, the strange side of human beings is that when f.e. a company plans to close stations, people complain. When a company plans to re-open a line... people also complain because of the noise generated, and so on... We are strange animals equipped with a serious resistance to change... This turmoil however, had less visible elements impacting even more people and families : closing of material maintenance sites (f.e. Latour, where the NoHab operating this line before electrification where maintained (were also maintained in Ronet (Namur)) and Stockem close to Arlon, both in the very south-east of Belgium), closing of marshalling yards (again Stockem, f.e.), so, basically optimizing the business model... but cancelling revenue sources for quite a lot of people. Good thing ? Bad thing ? Up to every one to make up his own opinion...
