When Abbie smiles and her dimples pop she looks exactly like Isaiah
@TheHollyIncident3 жыл бұрын
I think she could understand how the pool is cold, because even though she has delays she has so much sensory sensitivity. So possibly even a small change in air or water temperature is very noticeable and she can tell it would feel intensely cold to jump in. She is using her reasoning to know that, maybe her sensory sensitivity is driving it.

I’ve often wondered at these things with different kiddos I’ve worked with. I once read something in one of my classes that, because people with autism’s brain functions differently than a “typical “brain, they could be functioning at a completely different level in some areas. For instance, colors having a sound or textures having a taste. So... what if, and bare with me, she can see that the pool is cold or warm? That her intelligence is so heightened in this area she can see different shades and know it’s temp? Maybe by the color it gives, or even vibrations? So she was staring at the pool thinking, it’s not the right color yet. Instead of warm or cold? This probably sounds super wacky but I love thinking about stuff like this and have all kinds of theories when it comes to brain function and autism. Bottom line: there is a brilliance there that is way underestimated by most. You guys are doing a great job brining that awareness.

Asa, just a thought connecting back to my comment about swinging and swimming... If you think back over time, when she wasn't interested in swinging as much were those times that she was swimming a lot? Basically, does she replace one activity with the other? When she can't swim, she'll swing, but she'd rather swim....

Regression/progression is not just a thing in children, but also in adults. In my experience, when i focus on learning a new skill, the skill I learned last will regress. It goes back and forth for a long time until it finally balances out. And that will be the maximum obtainable level of acquiring those skills. That is why I choose to not learn certain things because the result will not be worth the effort. It is more profitable to use the energy for things that give energy. Set yourself up for success. If i struggle a lot with learning a new skill, I just set it aside for a better time.

There is also this thing called a plateau. It's when a person is neither regressing nor progressing developmentally but that phase is only temporary. Once the plateau is over there is normally a huge increase in development.

Hello Maas Family, I am Sorry this is a Day Late. Hey Abbie. Well done Brushing Abbie :) Oops, I am glad Abbie's I pad Survived being Trodden on. Did You manage to Convince Abbie to put Her Shoes on? I hope that Grandpa Enjoyed His Coffee and Abbie enjoyed Her Doughnut. What was wrong with the Display on the Pool Pump? I am afraid I really struggle with Fahrenheit. I wonder where Abbie wanted to go. what was Sandy up to? Should have Guessed the Music would have Drawn Abbie out.. Aww, Abbie with the Rock Speaker, Carrying it just like an old Tape-Deck Boombox! Yes, that Speaker is a little too Loud for Abbie to have right on Her Ear! I am glad the Flooring is nice and Safe for You all. Wow, that Plane was Low ! So, Sandy is a Ball Dog? Abbie sure likes those Speakers. I wonder how Abbie worked out the Pool would be too cold to Jump into? Abbie's Communication is doing really well right now. Yes Abbie does seem to be rather more Switched onto the World than She sometimes Appears. You both raised some very interesting Questions there. Indeed, I do wonder how Abbie understands that the Pool is too cold to Jump Into. I, Personally, think Abbie is extremely Intelligent, as She is clearly, at least from what I have seen, very Switched on. I am sorry that some of Abbie's Skills have Regressed, and I hope that they come back on Point again Soon. I am very Pleased to Hear about Abbie's massive Communication Increase :) Interesting comments on the Progression/Regression balance. I am Pleased that Abbie is back into Swinging and Table Tasks again. I am Pleased that Abbie is doing really well in 2021. Wow! So Excited! I hope You all Enjoyed the Takeout. Well, take care then Guys, Bye Now.

I think she understands the pool will be cold because when it's hot outside the pool is still cold compared to air around the pool. I think when it comes to her school smarts it has a lot to do with being OVERWHELMED by her environment and not "focusing" on what other people think is important for her to focus on. The world around her is just so much more interesting than say writing an essay or something like that. That's why those table activity boxes are so helpful. It mashes her environment with important lessons and tools that will help her with other things. The human brain is so mystical* I swear!

I am helping raise my autistic grandson. I agree Dad! There is no ASSOCIATION understanding. They seem to learn something. They may or may not apply it, to another situation, that is different, but contains the same elements, and understanding. They have problems with generalizations. Some, when real young, may know that a banana is yellow, but may not know the color yellow when it is a bird, or as ball. Just for a very basic example
