Don’t kick yourself man. You grabbed it by the tail so you absolutely landed it. If I get a big fish to my feet and he pops off I’m usually psyched because it’s a clean release. Not getting a nice picture for your memories can hurt but nothing about that catch should get you down! Outstanding fish on 6Lb. Especially without a steel or braided leader.

So here's what a buddy of mine taught me: he carries a 4 ft piece of parachute cord rolled up in the pocket of his fishing vest. On one end he has tied a permanent loop large enough to put his hand through it. On the other end is a slip knot (like a lasso). When he catches a big fish and doesn't have a net (or the net is too small) he simply "tails" the fish (puts the slip knot around the tail and cinches it down). When a big fish tries to swim away the slip knot tightens and the fish can be held tight by grasping the permanent loop on the other end of the cord. Fish are easier to "tail" than to try to hold them by the body or lip or gills. If you've ever watched the TV series "Wicked Tuna," once a tuna is brought close to the boat with a gaff hook, the first thing the guys do is put a rope around the tail with a slip knot and it secures their catch!
@bassntroutfishing
@bassntroutfishing 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that makes sense.. lot of armchair experts in the comment that say grabbing them but the tail is a no no. But they’ve probably never caught anything bigger than 2 pounds😂

LOL! Fish long enough & that just happens if you are being “gentle” on the fish with a light weight line. I agree with others that it was caught. If that happens to me & I want to keep the fish, what usually works is back up a bit from the bank. That keeps the fish from seeing you as easy & takes the deep bend out of the rod. When its tired enough to get near the bank reel & pull in one big continuous motion, so the fish builds up speed approaching the bank, & haul them up on shore. Then quickly run up & get between the fish & the water. Do this the first time the fish approaches the bank. The fish is still trying to figure things out. Don’t mess around with light line, haha. I don’t do this to fish I’m going to release though…. Otherwise you best get those feet wet & get in there, snatch that gill plate (gill PLATE, not gills), & lift them out of the water to unhook them if you don’t have a good net…. Better to have your experience then nothing! 🎣👍🏻

Bro, I know the EXACT feeling... I hooked into what was likely a 38" lake trout last ice season on a 26" medium light rod with 6lbs test. I fought that fish for about 15-20 minutes to get it to the hole. It was so big, I'm not even sure if I could of fit it's body up the 8" hole. I had it's head up, trying to get it by the gill plate, but every time I tried it would start thrashing and I didn't want to lose it. About 3 times this happened trying to get it up the hole, and on the last time I tried lifting it just a smidgen higher to get a better grab, and my line snapped... it was so worn out in just sat there beneath the hole for a few seconds before swimming away, and there was nothing I could do to grab it. So I feel you man, I thought about that fish for a good 3 weeks after thinking about what I could have done differently. In the end, you hooked it, you touched it, so don't beat yourself up. It happens. Nothing left to do but get back out there and go after it again 💪

Bro that was so painful to watch. Just grab his tail harder or give him a little toss onto the bank. He won’t be injured. Or when he’s half in the water half on the bank put the net in front of his head before he makes a run even tho it’s too small it would keep him in place while you get a firm grip on the tail. Ultimately there was a few ways that could have been avoided but I still count it as a catch. Absolutely beautiful fish
