Don’t give up on those suckers yet, man! I’ve been eating them for years. We gig them during the winter and have a fish fry in the bank. 1. Scrape all the scales off 2. Filet the fish; leave the skin on 3. Score the fish every 1/8” by cutting to but not through the skin. This allows those bones to cook down in the fryer 4. Bread the filets in cornmeal or fish fry of your choice 5. Deep fry at 350 for a few minutes 6. Remove the fish and add salt and pepper 7. Enjoy with ketchup, hot sauce, or any other sauce Let me know why you think. I can send a few pictures if it’ll help :) Enjoy!
@benhawke72312 жыл бұрын
I don't even filet or bread carp. I just scrape, score, and cook whole. If the fish is too big for a butter filled fry pan, then I cook it on my smoker in a butter filled baking pan. Use a good Cajun or catfish seasoning. Do not over cook or it will become crumbly like in this video. Just like catfish or tilapia. I think it tastes a lot like rock bass from the Puget sound, just less oily.

I realize I am late to the party but you need some education. Suckers ARE NOT AN INVASIVE SPECIES, do not compete with trout. Do not eat their eggs. Are found in most North American waters. Are important to the ecosystem. Like catfish, carp, gar, bowfins are misunderstood and part of natures cleanup crew.
@bassntroutfishing Жыл бұрын
I guess you know more about this specific waterway than someone who lives there. Let me educate YOU. In this specific area suckers are so dense they can and have outcompeted trout. There are two reservoirs below this creek that are taken over by them because they thrive more than the trout do in drought years. One lake got drained to try to remove them. There are a number of lakes around here that struggle to have a decent sport fishery because chub and sucker density is so high. Not saying every sucker in a lake is bad. Not at all. But around here they’re a nuisance. Can’t pretend like you know everything about every lake bud.

@@bassntroutfishing this would be an alright reason if all those trout species you listed weren’t invasive(considering the suckers are native). I guess I know more than someone who lived there. Bro, those are pretty good to eat. You need to fillet, cut the ribs out and then leave the skin on and then slice the meat every 1/8th to 1/4 of an inch all the way down the fillet to cut all the small bones up. You slice just to the skin and the skin keeps everything together. Then bread in cornmeal or corn starch and fry in oil. I catch those here in co and eat them occasionally... They're really not bad. The bones, once cut up like that cook soft like the bones in canned salmon, you just eat them. Scale them as well. Alternatively, i suppose you might be able to skin them, leave them whole but clean the guts out. And then slice down into the ribs and backbone would work as well i think. After you cook it, you can then make fish cakes out of it and re-fry it...

Cutting through the rib cage is a real mistake. I had sucker for the second time tonight and it was delicious. Fillet the proper way, dip in egg and bread crumbs, fry in oil with some pepper and salt and we had a fine meal. There are some small bones, but nothing to worry about. Lemon pepper is like steak sauce--completely unnecessary if you know how to cook!
