LOSSIEMOUTH stamps class on Mares' Hurdle to set up 2025 Champion Hurdle tilt

Lossiemouth was a straightforward winner of the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
The top-class five-year-old grey is trained by Willie Mullins in the colours of Rich Ricci, and Paul Townend never had any reason for concern at any stage riding the 8-13 favourite in a field of 11.
Townend was a picture of patience, allowing others to make the running before cruising through to sweep up the hill to an unchallenged success from Telmesomethinggirl aboard a mare who had been talked of as a possible Champion Hurdle contender after her scintillating win on Trials day in January.
Mullins said: “She was great - she’s a Champion Hurdle mare, we all think. Once again, Paul was very cool on her and she can improve another year on, when she’s a bit older. Running like that, in that ground, she’s got everything.
“We made the right decision (not to go for the Champion Hurdle this year). She didn’t get a grueller like if she’d been in the Champion Hurdle, she’s only five and getting a grueller in the Champion Hurdle is not what you want.”
He added: “I think I was part of the big roar at the last myself! I never do that normally, but when she went for it I joined in and that isn’t normal for me.
“I don’t think we’ll go to France, I’d have thought it will probably be Punchestown for a mares’ race and then after that I’ll have a chat to Rich.
“It’s very very nice to have a treble on the first day. Of course we’re in a position where we are bringing a big team across, but they have to win and after the Supreme I was worried that it was going to be a day like it was on the first day a few years ago when we had no winners.
“Of course I’m very happy with the day, I can enjoy the rest of the week now.”
Ricci said: “Paul did exactly what he told us he was going to do, which was hang back and pick them off. He seemed in the perfect position the whole race and she is just fantastic.
“The plan is the Champion Hurdle next year, let’s see if she is up for it, she’s been wonderful to own and she’d be undefeated if she hadn’t run into trouble at Leopardstown last year.
“I’m delighted with her, we’ve been very lucky with our mares and she is brilliant.”
Regarding this year’s Champion Hurdle, Ricci said: “Hindsight is wonderful, we had a plan and we stuck to it. Hopefully we’ll be able to go for it next year, we’ve won the Mares’, it’s a Grade One so we are delighted.”

Class performance with Townend full of confidence after a great opening day for him. Hopefully all goes well with her next year to take on Constitution Hill as Stateman won't be beating him so maybe this mare will give him something to think about

Cracking days racing, had a nice each way yankee on 4 of Elliott's horses and went pretty close to a 5 timer only for Embassy Gardens to let me down in the last. Nice to have a few bob in the account to cover the next couple of days. Good luck with the bets, hopefully winners are flowing tomorrow though I think bookies might start to fight back after Ballyburn.

i was surprised with ashroe she couldn't stay 2m but has won over 2m3f over similar ground paddy rode her a bit forward and keen and made her front runner i felt she set her own pace and was too fast. she should of got home much better than that, lossie made it easy too hands and heels through the center no stopping her great job to paul townend some day for him, hard luck jack and all the rest... so happy for derek o connor winning that national hunt he deserves all the winners he can get after 1000s of ametuer wins in P2P.

she was pulled up way off the mark compared to her win at 2m3 she blew out, ground was fine for her! galloped through it as front runner and set a great pace but that's what caught her out, too fast to quick that's my point really not that i have to clarify for you whoever you are. @@johnsonkevin1

@@johnsonkevin1 paddy rode her as a front runner to take the sting out of the rest while paul rode lossie easy even dropped her out at the start, willie wanted a lossiemouth win they planned it this way.. if paul was on ashroe and both ran to win it would of been a much closer race.. ashroe already beat lossie.

yeah you're correct my bad she beat gal marceu and gal marceu beat lossiemouth but i know it's all different trips days etc i just know ashroe is a good horse she never lost against another mare only beaten by 4 geldings in 2 races, i think she's good and only 4-5 like lossiemouth... i would never go against lossie again though after that run at trip it was stellar, but i do hope ashroe comes along at 6 and 7 like i know she can. @@johnsonkevin1

Certainly a class act this girl. Love Envoi and Maries Rock both running below par though Maries Rock is certainly not the mare she was last season, probably a stone less than last season. I find this a lot with Nicky’s horses, they are great one season and then they seem to be finished. I would imagine the paddock beckons for these two but Lossiemouth seemed different class. Congratulations to Willie and team, what a great day for Ireland.

@@paulrichards6894 yes aside from the champion hurdle third who ran well, the rest-well- mostly pulled up. Some are running like they are short of optimum conditioning and thats probably the going! However the yard seems out of form

Champion Hurdle? She has to date beaten nothing and will think she's gone into orbit against the likes of Constitution Hill and State Man. I don't think I've ever seen a poorer renewal of a Mares hurdle
