Lost Caves of Mustang: Ancient Tibet
The Lost Caves of Mustang documentary explores the cave temples found in Mustang, which is is the former Kingdom of Lo, where Tibetan languages are still widely spoken and traditional Tibetan culture remains.
Mustang’s status as a kingdom ended in 2008 when its suzerain Kingdom of Nepal became a republic.
The influence of the outside world, especially China, is growing and contributing to rapid change in the lives of Mustang’s people.
In 2007 Liesl Clark filmed her husband Pete Athans and climber Renan Ozturk as they tried to access some of these caves, and record them for the first time.
They had only a month to do the work on this visit, and they get off to a poor start being obstructed by snow blizzards.
Eventually they get some fine weather and began the exploration in earnest, turning up long lost paintings and artifacts from the caves, including manuscripts.
Later they are joined by an archaeological crew, both local and foreign, as they access more of the caves.

The painting and the colour that they put on the wall are Magnificent. Still after hundred and thousands of year they are so refreshing as if they are saying something or giving a message to the viewer. Thank you for making it happen bringing it to the people who can't go there to witness by themselves..... And the work of @Proper_Gander is beautiful. Love FroM ThE ToP Of ThE WoRlD 8848🇳🇵❤✌

You guys are really doing a great job by discovering these monuments which otherwise would be left unseen. It will be an immense help to the people of Nepal, Mustang and to those who love Buddhist teachings. My heart is filled with joys are some tears of happiness are running down my chick. I am looking forward to seeing the continuation discoveries being done to this site and help spread the ancient written scripts by the great Buddhist lamas and yogis.

Most of teaching scriptures were destroyed, the teachings were all bon and shamanic teachings which was great and still great that respects so much for nature. Buddhism came later basing all teachings from Bon religion. This can be seen from discoveries of scriptures

Thanks for sharing this documentary and working so hard on finding every single thing about these caves. I was always curious about those caves. No matter how hard it was to reach those caves, what I think is, you r all blessed for seeing something that no one ever did. I felt bad, that’s the villagers ask for money, they shouldn’t be doing that. Other than that, Everything is great 👍 I like it !! A lot!!

This is a great video,I must say, and I'm really sorry for the money u had to pay. But that is quite normal for any person to try to protect their property. I'm from Nepal and we know how irresponsible our government can be.. So as far as we understand, we can't trust the government blindly. We live in a poor country and these ancient properties are all we have for glory. We can't even think of risking those...

One may wonder why there were humans when the surrounding environment is so inhabitable. Yet, you see monkeys in the paintings. Monkeys need to eat fruits and climb trees. Also, you see wood structure that used to allow people to go in and out of the caves without much difficulties. Where did the wood come from? The region must have been rich in vegetation, perhaps with a lot of conifers or even some hardwood deciduous trees. The current state of the region must have been the result of human deforestation, overcultivation, overgrazing,... leading to climate change, erosion, ....
@kathmandoo
@kathmandoo 6 жыл бұрын
Arthur Hau You make some very good points. In the Khumbu region near Everest the tribes also cut down huge forest areas which started to affect the erosion in that area, especially around Namche. Edmund Hillary was a leader in reversing this and now the forests are quickly growing back. They now use dried dung for heating and cooking plus some of the bigger villages now also have gas. Your point is good in that if this deforestation was left unchecked then it may end up as a desert.

Those caves were probably built my sherpas who are in that area. In Nepal the Indian decedent people who look brown, known as chettry and Bauns. A majority of the people in the country look down on sherpas and use terms such as bhote. Sherpas decent from Tebet and the areas around it. We are also Buddhist and if you go to any Buddhist area in Nepal you will see sherpas and they live near the Himalayas. Most monks are also sherpas and we have our own language which is very similar to Tibetan. The food is also similar so. Sherpas were most likely to have been the ones who built the caves and lived in them aswell. The people there are also sherpas as they are speaking Nepalese in a Sherpa accent. The government of Nepal profits from sherpas with climbing and mountaineering. The state of the country and the lack of development in those regions of the country. I don’t see why others the people from the other casts think they are entitled to the money that comes from the Himalayas. They have no right to be proud and say they we are all Nepalese when a our people do something. As sherpas are Buddhist and are peaceful they haven’t done anything until yet. However times are changing, there are thousands of Sherpas growing up abroad due to the mountaineering success. Most of them are in America. Theres a minority in the United Kingdom, where I grew up. My own family members are in the Nepali government and a my aunt is one of the leading eye doctors in the country. Slowly but surely sherpas will get the rightful treatment that they deserve. My people back at home will get the compensation they deserve and the respect they should have had a long time ago.

They are a post deluge society. When the great flood happened, it collected in valleys and didn't drain out for decades. The people that farmed in the valley below, either died, or made homes in the cliff. For reference, I'm talking about the end of the ice age, when sea levels rose a couple hundred feet. I'm really speaking RIGHT after or "during" you could say. I'm no geologist, but if you fill up that valley with water, it's miniscis will meet the bottom level of caves....falling off was meaningless to them, they would have fallen into water. It probably stayed that way for 10-50 years. This also explains it's abandonment, as it got harder and harder to get into your house or village you would eventually move. Not to mention, the population could have begun to boom again. The cataclysm that caused their way of living was bound to have taken the old, the weak, the infirm. Leaving uneducated, unskilled people behind (for the most part). The culture survives in their memory, and was continued as best they remember. If you are reading this, and have more resource than I...check the valley floor with lidar from the air, look for a grid pattern. You may have to satellite spectroscopy.

The documentary makers disgraced themselves. There is no way locals would want foreigners (who are not even Buddhist) to be poking around. Government Permission? Since when has government respected Tibetan culture? - the majority of their spiritual leaders are in exile, working tirelessly to preserve what they can. The rationale of the man who asked his audience to question how valuable is their spirituality if they are willing to put a price on it...was like listening to a child whinge after being told to get down from a high play ground. Right from the beginning the narration contradicted itself, one minute they attempt to convince us that the locals knew nothing of the caves, except that they do, oh and they have books etc and if you speak to a Tibetan monk or lama (there are plenty in the west who have gone to the effort to learn your language) you would have been informed. But, alas, clearly the thrill seeking/do good documentary makers prefer to portray themselves in a humble, humanitarian light, but probably just jeapordised these valuable caves further by exposing them publicly (Let's see what the Chinese government does next, shall we?) The only truth the documentary makers managed to say (in that husky and ever so false humble tone) was that they didn't know what they were about to discover. Well, if you'd done any research at all....it's Padmansambavah himself!...he removes the ego - oh and how he delivered!! You found it - your whopping great big intellectual egos driven by foolishness, pride, arrogance and desire. This is not a rant or an attack, it is one exhausting exhale and an eye roll. I pray that you learn something, like don't do anything like that again. Ever. Om mune mune maha muneye soha.

wouldn't that have been hilarious if when he kicked and pulled out that rock the entire side of the mountain fell on him. Poor rock was there thousands of years and this prick comes and kicks it and pulls it out. But no seriously, great documentation.

I guess they are influenced by Bahunnism. After all, bad things are easily learned. Aryan Netas didn't hesitate to sell Nepal piece by piece and these people are selling their heritage.

+Tenzin Gurung i couldn't understand...when anything happens wrong you mongolian blame bahun...today all nepalese claiming most of the part of india was of nepal..so all nepalese of india claiming gorkhaland in india and all these nepalese include bahun,chetry,magar,gurung,limbu,rai etc..Do you know why they are able to claim today bcoz of the king of khas(bahun, chetry and thakuri) who got victory over land of india..so today the all gorkhas of india dare to demand land over there.

Shame and Pride are friends. Hubris (Greek) is not truly pride but false pride supported by comparisons with others. When false pride is revealed or "hurt" it reveals as shame. When true pride is revealed it reveals as love. Love and forgiveness are friends.
