Oh I’d absolutely love to see a spin off. Could you imagine a spin off of Jacob and the man in black leading up to current time? Jacob seeing his dead brother for the first time and how he has to be able to process that. Learning how to use his powers, learning how to travel to the mainland or at least project himself there. Dealing with the smoke monsters antics for so long that by the time Richard appears, he’s talking to the smoke monster like they’re frenemies. That would be amazing

Man, what a video. This whole series of Lost Explained has been 10/10. I went back to check if there was a marked location in the Lamp Post showing the island being in the Mediterranean at one point. The Med isn't really shown on screen, unfortunately. Creators missed a nice link by not showing us that.
@LOSTEXPLAINED1083 жыл бұрын
It's interesting that you picked up on that detail. Let me add this: it is possible that the Mediterranean was the Island's original location and, after the Egyptians moved it for the first time with the wheel, it never returned to that point again. Perhaps a future video on this channel will touch upon this idea a little bit further... ;)

I never notice the significance of Jacob's tapestry showing the timeline of the Egyptians and the fact that they left the Island oneday!! I always assumed somehow theyd ALL been killed but it literally shows boats leaving on the tapestry! Wild stuff. I deff like to think Jacob sent them away so the rest wouldnt be distroyed. Love the interpretation on these Temple and the summoning chamber as well!

Thank you for mentioning the Hindus. I am tired that everyone are just giving the Egyptians all the credit, while I think it's obvious that several civilization came and left, died out and fought against each other. It's just that either many had Egyptians helping out since the Egyptian area overlapped a lot or that the builders were referencing them, like the Swan referencing the Egyptians. Like you said, The Temple includes a lot of Asian features, with Hindu iconography and Hindu temple architecture. There's a statue of Brahma there. And a mural of possibly Durga (the goddess with ten arms and several heads. Could be built during the Khmer empire (9th century - 15th century). You also have the rope bridge (possible Mayan), which illustrates the point of "they come, they fight, they destroy, they corrupt". History repeating itself with various civilizations, often mixed together. Further illustrated with Oceanic 815 that have people with vast histories (Paik/Kwon family=Asia, Hurley=South America, Sayid=Iraq and further back you have Mesopotamia and so on).

Hi again. This just might be your crowning glory. I've always met some resistance when attempting to assert that the Egyptians were centuries later than the events of "Across The Sea", but you make a compelling case here. The translation of the hieroglyphs in particular is enlightening and your entire chronology leaves little room for reasonable doubt. I can only say "thanks" for now, but doubtlessly, I'll return with at least one related question. 🤔 In the meantime, take a bow.
@LOSTEXPLAINED1083 жыл бұрын
Thank you :) I am hoping that this video (and the next one coming up) will be able to provide convincing enough evidence (and reasoning) to challenge the narrative that keeps coming up around the chronology of 'Across the Sea', which continues to be a very misunderstood episode imo. The timeline of Mother, smokey, the Egyptians, and Jacob/Man in Black is an argument I have been having with fellow Losties since 'The End' back in 2010. Hopefully, these videos will serve as an easy and efficient way of setting the record straight on the timeline. I can just re-direct future arguments here and let the video do the convincing! :D

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108- it's fascinating to think how Sawyer in particular (because he held the rope) was unwittingly an influence on the Egyptians and on the Island's history. The same must apply to Charlotte's body, given that she died in that same flash. I wonder if Jacob buried Charlotte before the Egyptians found her (given that he would probably be immediately aware of her presence), because surely there would have been mass confusion over her appearance, clothing etc?
@LOSTEXPLAINED1083 жыл бұрын
@@drewc.4061 Also, we have to wonder if the rope Sawyer took through time with him becomes the same rope the Egyptians use in the well, which Locke climbs down and takes through the jump. If so, then that rope is just like the compass and has no origin. It's probably a different rope but, either way, this kind of circular causality does boggle the mind! I think we can only speculate as to what happened to Charlotte's body after they left her behind in the distant past. It is possible that the Egyptians came across her remains. And what they might have made of her clothes and appearance (fair skin and red hair) is interesting to ponder. I don't think it would have necessarily caused any time loop causality because no consequences of her body being left behind are ever followed up on nor mentioned again. They probably merely had an "Adam and Eve bodies in the cave" moment. I suppose we could hypothesise that the Egyptians finding Charlotte's body is what led them to the rope several yards away. I just hope that whoever came across the body gave her a proper burial.

This got me wondering if Jacob + MiB (post transformation) remained civil at first. In his guilt, Jacob might've promised to find a way to reverse his brother's condition so he could leave the Island but because their scientific knowledge was limited Jacob brought outsiders from Egypt to study the Light. The two may have even governed the Island together, thus the symbols/structures of reverence to both. One of the things the Egyptians recreated was the teleporting wheel which may have worked for anyone but MiB. Eventually they theorized his condition is tied to the Light and temporarily "disabling" it could allow him to go free. Thus the primitive version of "Swan station" was built at The Source to facilitate this. What they didn't anticipate was by dimming (or rather overheating) the Light, the entire Island would begin falling apart. So the experiment was terminated and Jacob outlawed any other experiments on the Light from that day on. This would've marked the beginning of their unending conflict and probably the split of the civilization on the island.
@LOSTEXPLAINED1082 жыл бұрын
I had also considered something along these lines. The idea that Jacob was trying to fix his error by instructing the Egyptians to create a system in the cave that would dam the flow of light and thereby save MiB’s soul, or re-corporealize him. I like this interpretation too. And it could absolutely be a possible version of the events that played out.

I always wondered if it was supposed to be Calypso's island at one point. Maybe Calypso ruled the island before 'mother' or maybe she was mother. Calypso kept Odysseus on the Island for 7 years and promised him immorality if he stayed. She was also said to weave on a loom. Some versions also say she bore Odysseus two sons. Athena makes Calypso release Odysseus because it's not his 'destiny' to die there. Edit... I had to come back and edit because I realized that Desmond's whole goal is to get on his boat and get back to his wife Penny, which is short for Penelope... which was the name of Odysseus' wife, who he wanted to build a boat and get back to...

Since this is the best Lost Examination channel out there, might as well share my long held theory. When writing the first season of a TV show, you don't know if you'll be picked up for further seasons so you have to write with 2 minds at the same time. 1) Write in a way that you can wrap up the series if you're given 4-5 episodes notice that this will be the only season. 2) Write open ended enough that if you're picked up for more seasons you can spin things forward organically. These are cross purposes, so only the best writing teams seamlessly navigate this until the network decides one way or the other. (This is why so many first seasons of long running shows feel oddly paced, have dropped plot threads, etc) With this in mind, compare Locke in episodes 1-18 of Season 1 with Fake Locke in Seasons 5 and 6. They feel very much the same, especially when contrasted with Locke of Season 2 and 3. I think Locke was written during episodes 1-18 so that, if the series was to end after Season 1, it could be revealed that he had been murdered and replaced by the Smoke Monster. Look at how Locke is recruiting people in season 1 and how he never does that again ... until Seasons 5 and 6. Locke goes out of his way to endear himself to (recruit) Walt, Charlie, Boone, and Michael in quick succession. He intentionally pits Sayid and Sawyer against each other, even giving Sayid a knife (remind you of Season 6?). Look at how Locke moves and operates in episodes 1-18 and compare that to Fake Locke in Season 5 and 6. The confidence, the lack of fear, the manipulation, the recruiting. It's uncanny. There's a lot more to this but to keep this a manageable length, it's obvious that the writers course corrected immediately once they knew how popular the show was and saved this plotline for the true ending of the series. If my theory is correct, then the writers are even more brilliant than we ever gave them credit for because this kind of double minded tap dancing is VERY difficult to pull off and they did it so well you don't even notice.
@CucumberCheese3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure Locke recruited people. I think in Season 1, he was helping people. He helped Michael find Vincent, he helped Boone get over Shannon, he helped Charlie with his drug addiction, he helped Claire build a crib etc. You say he never recruits anybody again, but he spends a lot of time in Season 4 trying to convince people to stay in his group, to protect them. Pitting Sayid and Sawyer against each other doesn't really echo MIB's character either. Him doing this is no different to blowing up the submarine, the flame and killing Naomi in seasons 3 and 4. The way he moves and operates, and this confidence, is due to his miracle regarding his paralysis. And through this reverse paralysis, he gains a connection to the island that he truly believes is real. This makes him seem off, creepy, and later determined and somewhat reckless.

I actually have noticed the difference in how the entrance to the Source cave looked between Across the Sea and the present, in terms of the brightness of the light. It was nice to learn the reason. Makes perfect sense - the light was pure and natural before the Egyptians, but then with the cork and water cooling system, it didn't appear as brilliant from the outside. Very interesting!

THIS is the video I should have watched before commenting on your "after The End" video! Wonderful explanation, this has always been one of the fuzziest pieces of the mythology for me. I saw a fun theory recently that the Israelite's Exodus from Egypt, in which the ocean appeared to open up before them, led them to The Island. They could have been there for centuries and come back "40 years" later.

in Star Wars, Yoda chooses Dagobah (a dark swamp) as his hideout after Ep III, because it is a dark place; Sidious would have found him otherwise. I think the "Dark Territory" is where light hasn't been channeled yet. Jacob helping waves of people bring light to locations creates resentment for the MIB, who promptly dispatches anyone in them. So the Temple was originally literally that, a sanctuary of light in the dark. The island as microcosm of the world, you can see ancient structures (like the LA church) everywhere, threatening MIB's (s*t*n) grip over it.

The thing is Jacob saying, at the end, “they’re all dead.” Lost purposefully never told us much about the Egyptian era but they left the husks and remnants of their time. This was very purposeful, and something I imagine many Losties were expecting answers for, but the show left this all as inference. The important point was with Richard appearing Jacob started acting, I think he knew he could hide away like the last 1600 years and merely survive or start preparing for the ultimate conflict. I like the idea that maybe he was involved in the Egyptian period in some small way, maybe learning something, but that when he has the conversation with his brother in the season 5 finale opener he has finally decided to do something he’s just hiding it from Smokie. Possibly time traveling losties gave him important information, that’s where he came up with building different mechanisms and disguising his plans, his brother Immediately took up being manipulative and deceitful like the people he found and Jacob genuinely found that distasteful but maybe after the Egyptian period, everyone dying, he decided he needed to do something and it wouldn’t be obvious but secretive. Thanks to time travel he knew who would come and he began using that for his plan, and it’s not a mistake he would meet with the leader of the others up to Ben. Widmore and Eloise genuinely needed guidance that would extend far off the island but he knew everything because of time travel. Final point is people need to remember Jacob is not the island. I think dreams were the island, fake Christian/Yemi is smoke monster, but Jacob was profoundly limited in his powers. He wasn’t going to force people to take the job but give them the option, this was his fundamental choice when he started realizing he wouldn’t make it out alive. Back in the day people used to think Jacob was super powerful but I now imagine he was not quite so powerful. He couldn’t make Sawyer’s parents survive, he might not know anything about Sawyer until the man traveled back in time but “whatever happened, happened.” I think some abilities are just for whomever is the protector of the island and maybe both Smokie and Jacob were able to sense and understand who showed up, but when we get to the setting of the show Smokie’s desire to just kill people, Like the episode Dave, was now competing with an actual question about the essence of humans Jacob had long sense figured out and used to his side, also Hurley couldn’t doe because he had time travel stuff to do. While Jacob had given up on convincing his brother about the nature of the human soul in the end he would prove it thanks to his plan succeeding. And for people who don’t understand the non-paradoxical time travel “whatever happened, happened” ends in the actual present tense so in the last episodes he really could of killed off everyone. Everything after Jacob died was up in the air. It’s a TV show so of course it worked but still, this is why so many people would die in that season

It kinda feels like the Egyptian era on the island is jacob’s “goth period,” in a way. Like the “pop” culture that moved him most in his “adolescent’” time, no matter how different those words were for him. It’s like that’s his jam and what he refers to when building his ethics, beliefs, and habits. Which kinda means it comes after the Greek, which is his mom’s era, or to say it in a modern way Greeks are boomers to Jacob.

Love this theory/explanation. My only question is about the temple water and it losing its healing properties after Jacob died. Doesnt the island give Jacob power, and not the other way around? So even if the current protector is dead, as long as the heart of the island is still intact, shouldn't the temple water still heal?
@LOSTEXPLAINED1082 жыл бұрын
Excellent questions! There are a couple of ways of answering this by using two different analogies: The first is that Jacob, as a protector, was connected to the heart of the island. But so too was the Man in Black. I describe them as being like a battery. Jacob was the positive charge and MiB was the negative charge. As long as Jacob was alive, there was a balance between these polarities. But after he died -- without a new protector to take his place -- the balance shifted to the nearest charge, aka the Man in Black. In other words, the light began to dim as the Man in Black's influence grew. The negative charge was taking over. Another way of looking at it is that The Island is alive. The light is its lifeforce and the water flowing out from the heart (and around The Island's rivers) is its bloodstream. A circulatory system, if you will. Jacob is essentially the immune system protecting the light and water from corruption or infection. So, by killing a protector (destroying the immune system) The Island becomes "sick". And the Man in Black is the infection spreading throughout the bloodstream. Which disrupted the natural circulation. When we return to the heart of the island in the series finale, the water running into the cave is very weak. It is stagnating. Whereas in 'Across the Sea' the river is deeper and pumping through the cave normally. It's a healthy heart. Basically, no protector means no protection. And The Island cannot function properly without that key component in place. The light and water are not flowing as they should be. The heart becomes vulnerable. Therefore, the temple spring waters no longer run clear because the light has dimmed, and now a literal darkness is falling over The Island. That said, the temple spring *does* still heal because it saves Sayid from his wounds. It's just that it has healed him whilst under the infected influence of the Man in Black. I hope this goes some way to clarifying what's going on with the spring.

I really appreciate you saying that. In an absolute dream world, I would love to be part of any future LOST project. I have many, many ideas for how a spin-off could work. But I think ABC would rather bring in more seasoned showrunners if they were to ever create a new series. I also think it is sometimes unwise for fans like myself to be in charge of something they are a big fan of, simply because fans are not always as objective in creating new stories. Such shows/films often veer into fan fiction territory and don't feel as dramatically organic as their original sources. Still, I take what you are saying as a very high compliment!

It certainly could be an amazing prequel series. However, I fear that Mark Pellegrino and Titus Welliver look too old for the sake of continuity to play their parts again, considering they were both supposed to be ageless. Thank you for sharing your insights and in such a concise manner; they have filled in a lot of holes for me, particularly how the Egyptians fit in to the history and that there was likely an "ancient incident". I would love to hear your thoughts on how the drain plug works, specifically how pulling the plug can stop water from flowing into the cave, and restoring the plug can restart the water flowing, and how the wheel apparatus works, specifically how the simple turn of a wheel can destabilize the entire island.

This is so fascinating! I was like yayyyyy! Were going to be talking about Egyptians today lol. You probably covered this but why did they have to put the cork in the light? Was it because the birth of the smoke monster? Did that diminish the light or caused disruption of the light so they had to put cork in there? The cork was there to keep back the evil darkness everything bad from being released so was there none down there before? Why didn't they need a cork before to keep back the evil and stop Island from sinking? It had to have been the smoke monster right that introduced the evil and him trying to destroy the island? So many questions I know you'll answer them and make it as fascinating as all your other videos. I'd love to see them building that statue. That's incredible! Wow explainer for the temples and I heard someone theorizing theres tunnels under ground Smokey uses to get around lol.
@LOSTEXPLAINED1083 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have covered some of this. All of your questions about the light (and darkness) have technically been addressed in Chapter One, Chapter Two, Chapter Four, and further elaborated upon in this chapter. However, the next video will go into these ideas in greater detail. I am circling back to the beginning of this series to clarify these points. Essentially, the thesis of my video series is that there is no such thing as original darkness, or original evil. There is only the electromagnetic light beneath the island (and the whole world), which powers living consciousness and existence itself. There is no darkness or evil down there. Jacob only explains the cork in this antiquated way to Richard Alpert in 1867 because it was the only way a god-fearing man from the 19th century could possibly understand a metaphysical concept and quantum mechanics. Through good and evil. But we know it's far more complicated than simply light vs dark. The smoke monster is raw disembodied consciousness (it’s what any of us would be turned into had we gone into the light like the Man in Black did pre-cork). If you watch back this video on the Egyptians (specifically around 15:56) you will see that I explain the reasons for why the cork was installed. The first turning of the wheel in ancient times caused The Source, aka the heart of the island in the cave, to destabilise, thus creating an ancient version of “The Incident”. Very similar to what happened with DHARMA. The Source was weakened. This required Jacob to guide some willing Egyptians to plug the leak down there, which cost many of their lives from the radiation exposure (hence why we see their bodies down there).

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 wow! That's a AMAZING analysis! Yeah I'm remembering it as I'm reading your reply and of course will rewatch those videos you said but thinking about it now I'll probably just rewatch them all because all these videos are extraordinary awesome lol. That's why I loved this show. The amazing mythology and history of the island with the awesome and amazing characters and unique story telling. I can watch a show just about the island. Start at beginning. You've probably already said how the island was created and why. Obviously like theres a heart to the island, the island itself is the heart of the earth. If anything happens to the island, the world basically ends. Maybe even the universe lol. I just thought of that and when reading your reply it reminded me about the hatch lol. The hatch especially how the showrunners described it is like plug in a big dike filled with lots of energy and if you take the plug out or dont push the button then the electromagnetic energy is released resulting the world to end which didn't happen but it's very similar to the island but the island has a literal plug or cork that's also holding back lots of electromagnetic energy but if the plug isn't put back in would it be same as hatch? Where it blows up but doesn't end the world. Cause that's what was supposed to have happened when you didn't push button obviously they just told them that like Jacob told Richard not exactly accurate but I think the cork not lut back in would destroy island like hatch but in this case also the world lol. Maybe not universe lol. I'm so fascinated about the island and the light which is same light in everyone and the smoke monster and I've never heard anyone describe him it like you did. Wow that was mind blowing and makes so much sense like of course that's what he Is lol but we needed you to unlock that knowledge for us lol . I prefer to think that the Egyptians built the statue of Tawaret to appease the fertility god because their women and children were dying after the ancient incident with the stone cork.
@LOSTEXPLAINED1083 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is also a possibility! I like how it would also tie into the show's theme of "history repeating itself". The only reason I omit the mention of this scenario is because, unlike the incident of 1977, the fallout from the ancient incident did not have a lasting effect on pregnancies. At least not going into the 20th century. The only way that it would make sense to me is if the cave of light was in a dangerous state of flux for several years following this ancient incident. And this caused the fertility issues for the Egyptians. Making the stone cork system would have taken a long time to construct -- dozens of workers putting in hundreds of man hours. Once the cork was installed, the issues with fertility stopped (until the incident of 1977). The statue of Taweret would probably have been built afterwards as a god-placating monument for continued good health and fertility, because I can't imagine the Egyptians having enough people to build both the stone cork system and the statue concurrently and within the same timeframe. There might be some holes with this theory but there is a logic to it as well.

The Island was not purgatory. This is a misconception. The Island is real and it exists in the living realm, and everything that happened on it was real and happened in the living realm. Whereas everything in the flash sideways was in the realm of the dead -- the afterlife. But this afterlife is connected to the light beneath the island. how did they put the cork in the light without also turning into black smoke?
@LOSTEXPLAINED10819 күн бұрын
It is not simply going into the cave that transforms a person, you have to go directly into the open aperture of light beneath the cave to be transformed. Remember that the Man in Black’s unconscious body is carried along by the current of the river stream which feeds directly into the hole of light. His body was sucked into the hole. That is how he transformed. To build the cork, the Egyptians moved around that hole to construct their stone system. That is why Desmond sees skeletons down there in the cave. Some of the workers died from radiation exposure.
@TECfan13 жыл бұрын
Wait...if the giant cork plugged up the light from being brighter, why did it completely disappear once the cork was pulled?
@LOSTEXPLAINED1083 жыл бұрын
So, The Source was always "on" beneath the island. It's an elemental force responsible for our whole existence. It exists on a fourth dimensional plane, hence why we perceive it only as "light". Since the beginning of time, water naturally flowed into the open aperture of The Source, keeping the light cool and the energy in balance. But when the Egyptians fiddled with the properties of the light and tried to re-route the water (aka the natural circulatory system of the island) via the donkey wheel, it destabilized the core of The Source and caused its energy to overheat, which put the light at risk of burning itself out. This was "the ancient incident" that I talk about in the video. The only way to prevent the light from burning out completely was to perform a kind of heart bypass surgery for the island, which involved plugging a cork into the open aperture of The Source and damming the flow of both the light and the water. Without the cork and the coolant system, The Source will overheat and burn out. And the world will fall apart, returning us to the volcanic magma planet that Earth began its life as. My chapter on "Moving the Island" gets into this in more detail, but that's it in a nutshell.

@LOSTEXPLAINED1083 жыл бұрын
Look closely at a screenshot of the tapestry (either on this vid or on Lostpedia). You will see that the figures on the boats are facing away from the island, as are the directions of the boats. The tapestry is telling the story of the Egyptians chronologically from top to bottom. The top of the tapestry is "The Eye of Horus" reaching out to touch chosen people. The Egyptians associated Jacob with Horus, so that part of the tapestry represents their coming to the Island.

Is there a specific reason why MiB is never named?
@LOSTEXPLAINED1083 жыл бұрын
The writers decided that leaving the Man in Black unnamed added to the mystique of the character. Had he been called "Samuel", as some fans anticipated, it would have given the smoke monster too much of a specific human identity, which might have undermined his mythic nature and confused his predominant guise in season six as "John Locke". In terms of the canon, it is implied that because Claudia had no second name picked, Mother simply left Jacob's brother without a name.

Ok about the egyptians but what about the acient Greek writings .Whats with the writing from the Odyssey? did Ulysses at one time got stranded on the island?
@LOSTEXPLAINED1089 ай бұрын
The implications are that, at one point in time, The Island was located in the Mediterranean Sea, and was accessible to multiple cultures that shared the border of that sea, including the Greeks. There isn’t as much data about the Greek history on The Island to extrapolate what their story probably was. All we know is that Jacob interacted with them due to his use of their language in his tapestry works.

Think of the island like a living organism. The Source in the cave at the heart of the island is its literal heart. The other light pockets around the island are its organs and arteries. And the water that flows around the island is like blood flowing through veins. When the Egyptians rebuilt the wheel and turned it, this rerouted the bloodstream from the heart and caused an "incident". It drained The Source of power, de-stabilizing the core and causing it to overheat. Basically, the island had a heart attack. So, this forced Jacob to carry out a form of "heart" surgery. He instructed the Egyptians to contain the energy before it burnt itself out. This required installing a cork in the aperture of The Source in the cave to keep the light from leaking out. Think of the cork like a pacemaker that keeps the heart beating, while the continuous water stream helps to keep The Source from overheating. When the cork is removed, the water drains out. And The Source starts to turn into volcanic fire. This fire would effectively spread across the planet and turn our world back into the volcanic magma world that it started out as billions of years ago. The light is the soul of the world (and the soul of all living things). Hope that makes it a little clearer :-)

Only issue I have with this. The GREEKS, ran Egypt for nearly 275 years through the Ptolemy line. Cleopatra, was Greek. Egyptians had not been running Egypt long before that, Nubians, Kushites amongst others controlled Egypr before Alexander showed up. So, Egyptians could have been coming to the Island decades before Octavian took it over. Cleopatra was the first Greek ruler to bother learning the language. The key to the Hieroglyphics was given to us by the Greeks, not Latins.
