Morning Steve its lovely to see so many people sitting outside in the streets chatting and not a mobile phone in site, lovely architecture cobbled stoned streets well worn through the passage of time. An array of flowers and bushes around and above the door ways, adding to the beauty original all blending together in an infusion of colors complimenting each other....

Hi Steve, you’ve really made my day with your video of my old home town ,”Lost in Birkirkara”. We left there to come to Australia when I was 12, I went to the school there when it still was only 2 storeys high. In regards to Tal Herba Chappell, two of my sisters were married in that chapel. My uncle the painter( artist) Joseph Briffa did some of the paintings in that chapel, as well as in one of the side chapels in St Helen’s Basilica. He also has works at Bormla or Cospicua, which he did after they were war damaged, as well as other churches around Malta and Gozo. Again thank you for a wonderful experience. Cheers Frank

Whenever I spent weekends at grandpa's as a little girl, I used to go to Sunday mass at Santu Rokku chapel while our dish of roast meat and potatoes was cooked in the bakery next door. Many people used to have their Sunday meal roasted at the village bakery for a very small charge. The baker's wood fire gave food such a special, mouth watering taste! This video takes me back over half a century!

Thanks for a very interesting video, Steve, in the back streets of Birkikarra, places I've never seen, so it was good to see different buildings and little alleyways. It was good you found Laura's old home, she must have been pleased to see that. The ladies in the lovely little church were nice and friendly. The Basilica looked similar to Mellieha Church outside, but different inside, both lovely, as are all the churches in Malta. Thanks for sharing.

Aloha, Great Video! Thank you Richard Calleja for sharing! This brings back many memories! of Santa Elena and il Madonna tal Herba. My Brother Joe Calleja may he RIP. He loved Santa Elena. Birkirkara Boys school. Back when the Boy had one side and the Girls had the other.Early 1970's.There were no windows on the outside. When it rained with all the wind all the hallways would be wet and everyone would slip. Just trying to get there morning milk. Thanks mate! Great Video. Cheers!

Thanks for sharing this video. We were there last year in August for the Festa of St Helena and stayed just around the corner in a beautiful three storey terrace. My Mum was born here so we took her back to experience this great part of the town's history. The bells rang constantly and I must admit woke us early in the morning and kept us up late at night! But besides that all beautiful memories. Loving your videos!!

My 7 brothers and sisters all went to that school in Birkirkara and to Saint Helens every Sunday until we emigrated to Sydney in 1967. Nothing has changed in Birkirkara since our last visit recently. We lived in Anglu-Mallia Junction. My house at 2 Botany street, Carlton NSW, is named "Birkirkara" , which we believe is the only one, so called, in Australia. The pastizzi shop close to the the church is a little treasure.

The churches are nice to see as well. I went to a wedding at one of them but back when I was at school so I don't remember which church it was. I hope Lara enjoyed it all, I know I did. There is the miracle (or legend, whatever you want to call it) of the Ta' Liesse Church, which in short is something like this: There once was Princess Ismeria (a Muslim princess), which tried to convert the knights (of Malta) to Islam. However the Knights did not want that and spoke a lot of the Virgin Mary, they told Ismeria that one sight of the Virgin Mary would be enough to instead convert her, and catch her heart. She told them to create a small statue of Saint Mary (to see her and to see if the knights were right) giving them a piece of wood, brushes and some paint. The knights, who were 2 brothers, prayed and prayed to the Virgin after the princess left them. That day, they instantly fell into a deep sleep and an Angel (sent by the Virgin Mary), carved out a beautiful small figurine of the Virgin Mary. As soon as the statue was done (professionally - overnight) the knights woke up to find the ready-made statue, and they immediately bowed down into prayer. When they called the princess, she was blown for one the statue was very beautiful and done overnight and two she had never see anything like that. Ismeria immediately converted to Catholicism and was Baptised. Later on the Virgin Mary appeared to Ismeria, predicting something I don't know, but the story continues..... (Don't know it by hard). Then there is the miraculous Cross in (Valletta) Ta' Giezu Church, which has a lot of devotion. The story says that once the priest who was working on the cross couldn't make Christ's Head and face, and one night he woke up finding the same cross ready with an amazing face. Then there is the Pittura of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Valletta, in the Basilica itself). A lot of people are devoted and pray to this and the Virgin Mary, and have received a lot of graces. I also wanted to mention that us citizens (Beltin) - Valletta, have other nicknames: 1. Tal-Palestina 2. Tal-Belt (Tas-City) 3. Tac-Cfuf ('Of the Ties' - Because back in the old days Valletta people were the richest amongst Maltese people) 4. Salott ta' Malta (Living Room of Malta) etc...
