Extreme winter vanlife arctic trip to Sweden taking my self-built campervan up north to the cold, snow and ice. cold overnight temperatures freeze my engine coolant
This episode Is a winter visit to the brilliant Ash and Marie of “lost in Europe” at their off grid barn in Sweden
Which results in lots of digging snow, playing around with tractors and getting used to life in this cold.
Ash and Marie take me on a trip to a nearby frozen lake I use some borrowed snowshoes whilst they Nordic ski through the winter forest
It was -21c overnight and I discovered that the glycol mix in my engine coolant isn’t quite right and it started to freeze and slush up. lucky the engine webasto thermo top v preheater is up the job. after leaving Ash and Marie I head back north on my trip towards the Arctic and buy some glycol and do a glycol coolant change on the way.
For this trip I have even brought the drone along to get some cinematic shots.
Check out my cold weather & winter van life upgrade videos to see what changes I made to the van for this trip.

I have been lost in sweden deep in forest in a old square 1978 Datsun at -20c ish , ran out of gas as well so we pushed the car the whole night and rolled into a abandoned looking gas station, the owner lived same house on the top of the station ,his dog woke him up when we pushed in

Never mind the induction cooktop travesty, tennis rackets on the ski trail is much worse! Ha-ha So now that bit of fun is over, lets get serious. for the most part, the expansion tank fluid is static, so its good you removed some from the radiator. The amount removed from the radiator is the amount that got boosted from the concentrate. Unfortunately, concentrate needs to be diluted with distilled H2o to archive maximum freeze protection. The expansion tank may remain full concentrate for a long time and the bulk of the coolant hasn't been boosted as much as you calculated. PS I love using my induction cooktop!
@MispronouncedAdventures

I wouldn’t use snow shoes on a groomed Nordic ski route as they just bad form. But only a self made trail in deep ish snow they made them self it isn’t too much of an issue. As for the coolant is was fixed a few days later. Had my induction cook top and air fryer over 2 years now, love them

Just been watching your arctic journeys all afternoon.. just a question .. maybe a silly one .. are you a snowfreak like myself ? You can tell how dry the snow is due to the sound. The humidity seems very low. I miss that crunchy sound. Your walk in the snow would be done on a snowmobile in the US. Also more noise and a bit less of a nature experience. Saw the snowmobile in the shed, so much fun in the winter :) Also nice to see you driving on the correct side of the road :)

Yeah humidity was around 20-30% on my temp sensors, which is why you getting that really dry snow. I mean it makes sense there not to be much humidity since it’s so cold most moisture has changed phase somewhere. Seen hundreds and hundreds of snowmobiles on the trip! I would love to get online

The drain valve makes you wish it had a better way to drain it without making such a mess. I wish there was a twist valve with a pin in it. That would be like your standard house outdoor water value (in the US at least) I feel bad for your jacket and gloves getting antifreeze on them! :( I always try to travel with work clothes (insulated one piece) for that kind of situation. I hate getting snow/ sand / rocks up my back, or getting covered in oil / dirt with my nice clothes. Thanks for making the content.
@MispronouncedAdventures

I would agree that drain valve is ridiculously inaccessible and borderline useless. I appreciate the consideration for my clothes those are where are my old work insulated jacket now for a van project jacket so no issues getting dirty and his gloves actually found the car park!

@MispronouncedAdventures

Glad you are enjoying it. I keep the batteries warm in two way. Automatic heat pads for one of them. Which worked fine for the last year. However a recent addition for this trip with a lifted the batteries off the ground by 25 mm so there is an air gap and then have waste warm air from the diesel heater cabinet blown by a small van underneath them. as any environment where the batteries potentially are getting cold I’m gonna have the diesel heater on anyway.

How do you keep your fresh water from freezing? A second question, can you top up your fresh water with snow?
@MispronouncedAdventures
@MispronouncedAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
All of my water tanks are internal, and in conditions like this the diesel heater is always on so ambient temperature doesn’t really get low enough. However since I have the main cold water pipe which runs through the floor for this trip I decided to switch to 2 x 10 L jerrycans for water and have them on the same side as the tap and the kitchen. Using snow is pretty ineffective, I mean you definitely could. But easy enough just to fill up or buy water
