The coast guard saved my brother when he was on a sail boat and caught in a violent storm. He called the coast guard with a GPS emergency signal and they recovered him in a really bad storm with his sail boat capsized and a difficult rescue swimmer recovery. A week later with help from his friends, he found his boat and recovered it. It cost several thousands of dollars to repair it. I served 21 years in the Marine Corps with 3 years in combat. But had I known at the time that the Coast Guard has operational missions 24/7 I would have joined them. I'm 75 now. The greatest honor in my life was leading Marines. But I think perhaps an even greater honor might have been saving people 24/7 in the coast guard.

At Marine bootcamp my CO told me not to die, so we say Marines call the Coast Guard. If we were to do things like this we need two rescue boats and 5 coasties and the Navy says: hey Marines, man the weapons and check the deck. Marines don't jump into freezing water.

This one really got to me! Two stories, one ended in 2 fatalities and the other, because they were prepared, we're rescued! If people are going to push the envelope on adventure, they need to prepare for ALL things that COULD happen! It made me proud that the couple rescued was retired military, including 14 years in the coast guard! God Bless you all and keep you safe!

Im glad to see the realities of not always finding them alive. The harsh reality of the dangers of the ocean and Alaska shouldn’t be sugar coated. These guys must have such extreme Highs and lows. Hope each has a solid spiritual and emotional outlet for that.

What a blessing to have such dedicated people… please those of you who enjoy the Alaska terrain, please take time to properly prepare… not only for your safety but for those who are sent to rescue you. Dang this couple was far better prepared and very sensible compared to most people who get in trouble. They had all they needed to survive, no doubt all that training and career the gentleman had. If everyone planned ahead of time as they did, there would be a lot less deaths. My hat is off to them. Love from Scotland

@@gailcraig4495 that's absolutely correct! My dad served in every branch except the Marines, my grandfather lost a lung to Japanese Mustard Gas and my nephew served. My father and grandfather went on to become police in LA and then my dad was an Animal Cop with full police powers in Olympia for several years. He had the walk until the day he died. Statue straight as an arrow when walking and everything had to be perfectly folded and shined. My sister n I loved teasing him.

The people who were developing the critical techniques, knowledge, skills, and abilities, 50 years ago were too often ignored and disregarded, unrewarded at the time. Today, they are 70 & 80 years old or more, unknown. There are still so many things for each of us to learn, and then to teach.

@@troyottosen8722 People think I'm nuts cause all my kits are put together with Alaska in mind, I'm talking 3 separate sources of fire starting gear, food, warm clothing, full medkit (one step shy of a trauma kit for my main camping set), the works. So many people think it's overkill, I think it's barely enough for an Alaska day, and I've only ever seen those days in shows like these and in movies. Absolutely no such thing as being over prepared.

Those waters are so frigid that without survival suits you have approx 15-20 mins tops to get dry and warmed up before you succumb to hypothermia, given the flight time out those pilots either were barely on scene or were still partway out when they succumbed. And at that point even if they had been "alive" the last stages of hypothermia do not give you much option for movement or cognition, so it's unlikely those poor guys would've been able to signal anything. It's one of the terrible truths of Alaska that the cold and the water are more dangerous than the wildlife. You MIGHT get attacked by something if you are very unlucky and do something stupid, but you WILL succumb to hypothermia in a matter of minutes in most cases up there.

The moment the pilot said it was over an hour. I just had a strong feeling that these guys were dead. I felt a glimmer of hope because the video kept showing us that the Coast Guard was still searching. But not a happy ending this time... Reality check.

I always wanted to be in the coast guard as a kid. Unfortunately my coast guard career was abruptly cut short when I was around 12 years old. That was the day I realized I would need to swim deep in the ocean. And just like that there was 1 less potential coast guard member for the future.

I've watched all the Alaska Coast Guard vids posted by Danger TV and I just love the Coasties. The job is so demanding, Alaska is beautiful and it's exciting to watch. I've moved on to the Florida CG stories. The vids are nowhere near as exciting, but on the plus side, the rescue swimmers wear far less clothing. Yum!

I'm definitely a HUGE fan of the Coast Guard and Search and Rescues!!!!! I think they are hero's everyday!!! But I'm curious on the PIW call, why would they search the shorelines first especially since they said earlier in the search that the current were against them getting to the shores? So that took over an hour! Not trying to blame anyone, just wanting to know the reason if they knew it'd be difficult if not impossible for anyone to make it with this current?!?! I'm sure there's a reason, just curious.

I think because they had called on their cellphone saying they were swimming for shore. CG almost always do the shoreline first in hopes they made it and when they don't find anyone, then they start the water search

They have whole crews that drill this sort of thing. Emergency plans for all situations including this or coming across a sinking ship so on and so forth, it's a floating city. Pretty much a town of 400 to 2000 depending in size of cruise ship

Just a quick question and maybe I’m not totally clear about this but when we lived in Kodiak many of the crews on vessels had “Gumby Suits”? This also included USCG Crafts. I noticed on all of the videos I seen, these stranded persons did not have them. Just wondering if this should be a requirement for all sea going vessel should have the?

When fishing on a boat in cold weather they should be forced to wear a survival suit. The suits should have gps and have a shit load of led lights all over the suits with batteries that last a long time would be really easy to have this stuff in the suits and not even that much money. The gps will give the rescue team the area and the lights will help find them in that area.

I heard leadership not superiority. He is teaching military personnel how to stay alive in a worst-case scenario. Holding their hands because they might be delicate flowers isn't his job. I grew up in the mountains of Colorado and also went through one of the earliest Outward Bound courses and our instructors sounded just like that. 50 years ago

Did you hear the Coast Guard Swimmer trainer in earlier episodes? He was exactly the same. This is how military and police training is in the real world, where real people face real challenges. And they're all volunteers. It is not a 'safe space', nor should it be. If a person can't take it, he or she or they don't belong in SAR. Our police have to deal with people throwing Molotov cocktails, bricks, guns, knives, and laser beams aimed at their eyes. The vast majority of them are everyday heroes. When you hear someone breaking into your house, who are you going to call? A guy who was trained in social working, or a police officer willing to take on a life or death situation?

Usually the first instinct of people that go in the water is to swim towards land. After checking all the land around the search area, and not finding anyone, it is pretty clear that they will still be in the water within that search area. It just helps to speed up the time of rescue by checking the obvious places first, then starting a more difficult water search.

And by the time the Coast guard got there it was already 1hr+ since the call without a survival suit the water is just too cold they had to make it to land but even if they did hypothermia is sets on so fast

It feels like there is something a bit off about this .. Like generally if they're not getting anywhere, they have about 3 rounds of crews on the case!! Why didn't they in this instance, and 1 crew could have checked S/l, and another crew could have stayed in the water...

There are so many factors not just weight, weather wind, air temp, remaining fuel, etc. also, the priority is human life and, believe it or not, environmental impact! Seen these in other episodes! Aloe of times you will see people got back to retrieve items.

They don't tell us why they had weight restrictions - fuel was what I was thinking, but as John Klinger posted there are many things that would contribute to that. I would not question it if I was told they had restrictions. Priority is to get back home!

Not to be hard on the Coast Guard or anything here but shouldn't they have concentrated on the water first and found out which way the current was moving in their last reported location and looked down stream from there? I wouldn't waste a lot of time looking at the beach when they were reported in the water for crying out loud. This team is kind of brain dead if you ask me or has not comprehension of any signs of common sense. Of course you not going to find them where they aren't even reported of being. See instead of wasting time looking at the beaches and going to the last reported position of the overturned boat and going down current from there they might have been on time for one person but two hours after capsizing no way they are going to rescue it becomes recovery time. All do to negligence in the actions of this commander/captain on board this helo. This is the second time he has done this on an on going operation. If it is not the outcome of what you wanted why do the same method of your searching. to do the same thing knowing the result and to still do it expecting a different outcome is the definition of crazy guys. Your protocol is severally messed up here.
