I don’t know if I’ll ever have another trip quite like this one. Nearly having a moose swim into the side of my canoe, just minutes before having a wolverine run along the shore beside me! These are just a couple of the highlights from this incredible trip through Canada’s Boreal Forest in northern Ontario.
In the summer of 2023 I (Keenan) and my trusty travel companion Betty-Lou planned a trip through a seldom traveled park in northwestern Ontario. St Raphael provincial park only sees a handful of canoeists every year and there is very little information about this park. Although, I had high hopes that this would be an incredible canoe trip it completely exceeded my expectations!
Seeing eagles, moose, wolverine, bear and what felt like hundreds of loons, this trip was exceptional for wildlife. Catching a never-ending supply of Walleye just added to this incredible journey. Honestly, it’s hard to ask for anything more on a canoe trip and I feel very lucky I had the opportunity to explore and canoe through this amazing place.
I also want to give a big shout out to Brad and Leah @ExploreTheBackcountry (studio.youtube... the work they put into their website and videos. I used their maps, which were incredibly useful. If you haven’t already, head on over to their channel and check out some of the incredible trips these guys tackle.

Simply wonderful video, 10/10. What a special route this is and I couldn't agree more about wanting to go back, especially after watching this. I thought woodland caribou would've been the pinnacle of wildlife sightings here but no. Still can't believe that and on that beautiful little unnamed lake (I think) to cap off your trip...wow. You got the royal treatment here man, and your captured it all magnificently

Thanks guys. It’s a special place. You’re right, I didn’t get the caribou swimming directly at me but the wolverine was a pretty incredible moment. It was on the little unnamed lake. Still can’t believe it.

@@CanoeTheNorth Caribou can be curious. My hubby , while in the northern bush, came across some caribou. They were a long way off but he could see heads turning towards him. He simply sat down on a bolder and took out his thermos of coffee. While he enjoyed the coffee he was watching some of the caribou slowly coming towards him...curious. They stopped about 20 ft. away, sniffed the air and watched him a while longer then took off running up the hill. Maybe your caribou simply wanted to check you out.

Yet another amazing production. The wolverine came out to thank you for all of the happiness your hard work has given us. The moose was awesome. Once, while canoeing the Bell River in the Yukon, I came around an island to see a cow moose that had just birthed her calf on the bank. Steam was still coming from the calf and the mother’s legs were still weak. They were so close I could have touched them with my paddle. I just froze and floated by them forever burning that memory in my mind. But I never saw a wolverine on a canoe trip. So cool. Thanks again.

Buy an airplane ticket to Thunder Bay ontario,or Whitehorse, Yukon territory, or Ottawa ontario and rent a car .anywhere north of Barrie ontario is pretty wild country! Buy a GPS,with an emergency beacon, and a warm sleeping bag (20° f rated! Ground can be cold)and a rain tarp, and come on over, there's lots of room out in Timbuktu! There's Fort Frances to Kenora, with thousands of puddle lakes, bush, fish moose, dear elk? Caribou etc! And black bears! And have a fantastic time!

Fantastic film mate. This is the first video I've seen of yours. Beautifully shot and nice soothing music and tempo. I'm from Australia and whenever I watch a Canadian canoe tripping video I'm always envious of the access you guys have to such fantastic paddling. Consider yourself lucky (I'm sure you already do!). Also, it's so great that you're able to take you furry companion along on these trips. In Aus, even though we have huge amounts of wild public land, unfortunately dogs aren't allowed in the majority of it. I have a Kelpie (an Australian working dog similar to your Heeler) and every time your dog made a sound my dog perked right up and watched (I think he's also jealous haha). Thanks for a great video mate. All the best.

That first sunset was outstanding. I for one appreciate your choice of dinners. Simple and easy to fix. Nothing complicated. As for the noodles what's wrong with that. You need your carbohydrates. Perfect timing for me. I was in need of some escape time. Such a wonderful place to escape toooooooooo! Now that's the kind of Walleye fishing from our trips in the early 60's. I remember making five casts and catch 4 fish consistently. Thank you for your time making these.

Wow, I love these solo trips as there is just the right amount of communication and it feels like you are speaking directly to the viewer. I love, love “Lost Lakes” and now you have been added to my watch list! I found this so relaxing but I think it’s because you seem very relaxed in your environment. The wildlife certainly didn’t disappoint! Tbh I particularly enjoyed the loons footage. I like your dog Betty Lou, she is perfect companion and she loves fishing, double whammy lol.

this is better than most documentaries, i mean national geographic might have you but, do they?? considering financing and the crew behind it, in my eyes you got them!! its absolutely incredible that you are by yourself, your filming skills, beautifully edited, saturated color for each scene and attention to detail on those close up shots is incredible under the circumstances(on a boat in the wild alone for example), i cant say ive seen better from anyone solo doing backcountry footage like this and i watch them all, lost lakes probably my 2nd favorite after your work for editing and quality of footage.. awesome he commented - cheers! subscribed

@@CanoeTheNorth utmost respect when someone wholeheartedly put all they had into something they love, that's rare these days - i'm on my second watch and the camera panning work is insanity.. you couldn't catch all the work that went into this in one view but ill continue to re-watch this and appreciate each frame, keep making content like this and you'll make a hell of a life and living out of it, mark my words there.. from a fellow ontarian, can't wait to get out there myself with my wife backcountry camping, and my kids once they are old enough for that type of thing - we have 5 boys from 2-8 and a 4 month old baby girl so we are busy but this is what we dream of.. we try to go to driftwood provincial park a few times a year with the whole squad but it can be hectic with the age group.. this is on another level but we are building up to it, wicked memories to be had in the north.. again cheers & exceptional job

Hello from Oklahoma! Thanks for the video! New subscriber for sure. Brought back a flood of memories! I spent a lot of time in Northern Ontario and Manitoba back in the 1970's and 80's. There's nothing like fresh caught walleye or pike cooked for a shore lunch! Leaf Rapids was usually our starting point in Manitoba, Sandy Lake in Ontario. I worked at a church camp one summer, for 3 months, it was called Luther Village, it was on Dogtooth Lake. I'm an old man now, I hope to go back North soon. Thanks again for the video! God Bless!
