This is one of those movies where I didn't feel sad, angry or even happy when it ended. I just felt content. Felt like I just witnessed life happen, it's so weird to explain. Also, we don't talk enough about how good Scarlett Johansson is in this. She's really exceptionally good.

It's like being trapped in the prison of your own life and a beautiful bird flies into your cell. It doesn't change anything. You're still in prison. But for a brief moment, you appreciate the life and beauty this bird is bringing to your cell - a brief reminder of the life you used to have outside these walls.

well said. I don't really agree with marking this movie down because there was little to gain for the characters. sometimes a movie like this one that reflects reality can actually be a good movie without having to have some kind of epiphany at the end.

We don't have to worry about Bob Harris. He's fine, still alone in a desire to share his impossibly glorious life because his wife has no desire to explore. He'll still be okay because he needs nothing of life purpose. Charlotte, on the other hand, is very lost and needs reassurance. The embrace and kiss were not for Bob. What's important is the whisper that we aren't privy to. I know what it was and it's the key to the movie. He told her she has nothing to worry about because she's awesome and she WILL find her way. Hearing that from a guy like Bob Harris will be enough to lift her. You may think that is giving Bob too much credit but isn't the whole buildup leading to that? We get insight into his wisdom and kindness. He has the money and wherewithal to put himself into the circle of genius and you get the feeling he has, or at least been in very close proximity. His reassurance will mean everything to her. Don't you think that also he has the clout to get in touch with her again sometime down the line? I don't believe in any romantic sense that they'll carry on a relationship, but love can mean a deep and abiding interest in someone's well-being. PS: Her husband is a Hollywood/Madison Avenue machine tool. For her to achieve anything in the future she needs to sever herself from that boat anchor.

There's a lot of great behind the scenes drama with this movie. Giovanni Ribisi's character is supposedly based on Spike Jonez who Sofia Coppola was married to at the time. The character played by Anna Faris is rumored to be based on Cameron Diaz. When you look at it through that lens it's pretty interesting.

Lost in Translation was said to have been kinda semi biographical, based on Sofia Coppola's experiences in Japan. A little FunFact: Anna Faris's character was based on meeting Cameron Diaz. lol I guess Sofia wasn't a fan.

Lost In Translation (2003) is one of my favorite Bill Murray movies. Known more for comedy than serious roles, he nails the part in this one by playing a version of himself, a "past prime" actor in his self-reflective years seeking a connection with another generation. For another serious Bill Murray movie, I strongly suggest the WW1 era drama The Razor's Edge (1984). BTW, that's the same year Ghostbusters (1984) was released. Talk about range.

I love this movie. This is about a man and a woman meeting at a place they don't understand. In some way, they are each other's couple; she is his younger wife at the beginning of his marriage, and he is her husband in the future. I believe the secret whisper in the end is about that. The title, LOST IN TRANSLATION, has a double meaning, like Lost in Tokyo, but also lost as people - but in the end, they both get it, don't make each other mistakes in life - or something like that.

Oh I really liked this film. They are both at a loose end and they meet in an odd way but they really connect. Bob does not snore like her current husband plus he smokes so that's not a problem either. Bob is funny, supportive and a decent singer. At the end I think Bob tells her he is going to get a divorce and return to her as fast as he can. It gets lost in translation. The song at the end is also perfect, kudos to Ms. Sofia

Rewatching this movie and parts of it I take it as these feelings of isolation or depression never end or go away no matter your age or relationship status. A lot of people think that being wealthy or being married is a solution to never being alone or feeling these things. Whether you are young or old, or new in a relationship or married for x amount of years, at the end of the day you have to find the things and people that let you enjoy life and give it meaning. Also that these feelings are also very cyclical. You might feel happy or content but there are times that you won't for some explicable or inexplicable reason. I think the backdrop of Japan conveys that foreign place but you can be feeling these things in your own home or native country. Japan I think just illustrates it better artistically due to the cultural differences. The ending isn't suppose to give you a definitive uplifting or down feeling. If it does, its fleeting because you and they will feel this way again as you two stated or "they are where they were at the beginning of the film". They are but do they know now what it takes to change that?

I love this movie, and everything Sofia Coppola does. Funny story about this. I found a credit card on the ground and decided to look up the owner. It was a local doctor and I emailed him. He said his wallet was stolen and the card was already deactivated but asked if I'd send the card anyway, so I did. Like a week later I got a letter back from him with a whole bunch of movie gift cards as a thank you. I took the girl I was seeing to this movie.

idk you guys know but the director(Sofia Coppola) of this film inspiration was her marriage her. husband which was another director(spike Jonze). they were married in 1999 and got divorced in 2003. she director lost in translation to show her point of view of her marriage which was not seen and not heard and spike directed the film called her in 2013 of his point of view also. also scarlett johansson stars in his film too.

I don't know about Japan, but I lived in China as a 6'1" tall man and everything was always very short for me, the bed, shower, etc., not to mention standing head and shoulders above the rest of the people. Michelle...Bill Murray's character was never going to find anything from his short relationship with this girl to get him through any of life's hurdles. He's trapped in a loveless marriage and only remains because of the kids. Scarlett's character just provided an escape at a time when he needed it the most.

to me how I see it , the lost in translation is not as first degree as it seems , he's on decline career and she wanted to be included in her husband life which apparently he's not really into let her and show not much interest in her being there with him , both lost souls in a foreign city , they found each other and learn to appreciate each other , she being jealous and him missing her quite some , the end is to me the real lost in translation meaning , they both from different world and generations but both " in love " with each other but not able to translate it in real life as both are in their world part , not apart but not together as well , why he kissed her and she let him as well , both want it that way but at same time an impossible story , lost in translation not from the foreign place they both are in but they just can't translate their feelings for each other that's my take on it

I like your description Michelle of mildly entertaining. You definitely get a sense of how bored ScarJo and Murray are, it has a nice pacing to it. I was also getting The Intern vibes with the interactions between De Niro and Anne Hathaway but they only had the bedroom scene where they were just friends and had an somewhat intimate discussion. Just what popped into my head as I was watching it.🙂 Did not see this in the theater. Thanks Ladies and Bob!

Bob Harris is an English DJ from the days when a DJ was a bloke who played records oin the radio. He was known as Whispering Bob Harris because of his husky delivery ( as ina husky tone and nothing to do with dogs). I disliked this movie initially because old Bill seemed way too old for Scarlett who seemed too old, and he was not averse to taking advantage. Maybe I was wrong. (I'm very familiar with the nightmare of days upon days (and weeks upon weeks) in a hotel on your own.)

To forces of light entertainment. Thank you for this movie. Most reactions are the same movies 1980s onwards. Some suggestions. Casablanca 1942. The Caine Mutiny 1953?. The Ten Commandments 1956?. Spartacus 1960. Lawrence of Arabia 1962. The Agony and the Ecstacy 1965. Dr Zhivago 1966. The Lion in Winter 1968. Romeo and Juliet 1968. Love Story 1970-the ultimate baby boomer chick flick. Lastly, Gone with the Wind 1939,- a really great movie with the stain of racism, but it was 1939.

I like this movie. It's an interesting story, believable, and funny. I like Scarlett's character; laid-back, nice sense of humor, directionless. Perhaps she thought marriage would give her more of a direction. Bill Murray's character is pretty much just himself, though with a touch of underlying sadness; the direction that his marriage has taken him to. I think the idea in this movie is that marriage is what can get lost in translation, such as when it doesn't turn out like what you thought it would be. I enjoyed watching with you.

I think the way to appreciate this kind of movie is not to see it through the prism of a traditional story arc. This is just a slice of life and people’s actual lives don’t change in an instant like they do in Hollywood movies and it is more honest. Some grand happy or tragic ending isn’t the way people experience life. The reason I love this movie and others like is because it doesn’t have a traditional happy or sad ending, just like life.

For me, Bob and Charlotte will move on to different partners. Bob has already started the separation with the one night stand with the singer, and Charlotte was woken up with the "lavish you with attention" line, realising what is missing from John. It's a happy ending, we just don't see it in the film.
