LOST LANDSCAPES 02023 City and Bay in Motion: Transportation and Communication | Rick Prelinger

This year’s LOST LANDSCAPES (the 18th!) sets the Bay in motion, revolving around the myriad mobilities and means of communication that have kept Californians in touch with each other. Casting an archival gaze on San Francisco and its surrounding areas, the film revels in the textures and activities of everyday life, work and celebration, replaying known and unknown historical moments, daylighting lost and found infrastructures, revealing the scars of settlement and pointing to more hopeful futures.
This year’s film is drawn from over 3,000 archival films newly scanned in the past year, including home movies, government-produced and industrial films, feature film outtakes and other surprises from the Prelinger Archives collection and elsewhere.
Each year, LOST LANDSCAPES donations bring in about 25% of Prelinger Library’s annual budget. Please consider supporting this famed experimental research library, now in its 20th year, that provides access to artists, historians, community members, researchers and readers of all kinds!

Rick Prelinger is the founder of the Prelinger Archives in San Francisco, whose moving image holdings may be found online at www.archive.org. With Megan Prelinger, he co-founded Prelinger Library, a publicly-available collection of historical periodicals, books, print ephemera, maps and government documents.
"LOST LANDSCAPES 02023 City and Bay in Motion: Transportation and Communication" was given on December 4, 02023 as part of Long Now's Seminar series. The series was started in 02003 to build a compelling body of ideas about long-term thinking from some of the world's leading thinkers. The firework "City of San Francisco" train portrays an EMC-E2A locomotive, which entered service in 1938 and was used until 1948. Later, the color scene showing trains arriving at the Transbay Terminal must be between 1939 and 1941, as the last train of red cars is from the Interurban Electric Railway, which was the Southern Pacific's East Bay commuter operation, which shut down in 1941. Many of the cars later operated on the Pacific Electric in Los Angeles.

At 46:30, you can briefly see El Cerrito Creek, which formed most of the Northern boundary of Rancho San Antonio (Peralta Land Grant). Rancho San Pablo (Castro Land Grant) is to the North...1820's. There's a historic marker on San Pablo Ave in front of the Wells Fargo bank noting this.
