Hey Nurse B! Im a professor at a nursing school in the STL, and I am an educator in a hospital. Hospital bedside nursing is challenging for everybody, those who have lots of experience and those who don't. You are growing, and it's going to be intimidating and humbling, but keep pushing forward. You have probably heard of Dr. Patricia Benner's, From Novice to Expert. You were at the top of your game in the nursing home, so you were an expert, but now as an RN, you are a novice. With time and experience, you will become the expert again and be back on the top! I think you should continue working on this floor for about a year to continue building and sharpening your RN skills and then venture out to something else. This is the beauty of nursing! Its so many things you can do. But what I heard in your video is that once you build your RN skills, you would make a good wound nurse! You would just need a certification. And also, if you felt like going back to school for your MSN, you would be a great clinical instructor or nurse educator! (But dont do it for the money. Don't get me wrong, the pay is decent, but the money is in bedside nursing overtime or agency contracts). As you said, everything you have done in the past has prepared you for where you are today! Whatever you decide, just know that you got this!! Love your videos, and I also have one of your videos (How to study for Pharmacology) posted in my course as a resource for my students❤

You're right. The energy in the hospital is different. Do nurses that have been there a while have time to sit down? If not its just the type of work it is. It took me one year working part time to really feel confident on med surg. Then I had a bully and i switched to cardiac. It was a lot for me to handle, i ended up quitting. In a perfect world i would have stayed in med surg a little longer bc i finally got my groove. But im not staying anywhere where my license and mental health is at risk. You got this ❤

Ur right, most of the nurses on the unit are up most of the shift working. I’ve definitely gotten more into a “groove” since I filmed this video. I’m just taking it one shift at a time and asking God to give me all the tools I need to be a great nurse. Thanks for the perspective. I hope that you have found a career or a place in nursing that fits your. There are SO many options

Tbh your positive attitude is a skill in itself! It makes the job so much better! I am a hospice visit nurse now and I love it! The families and patients are so appreciative and grateful. That is not always the case at hospitals.

Hey Nurse B. I hear my virtual god daughters in the background so I'm going to make this quit. Have you thought about utilization review or management or how about medical coding and billing? Think about it, look it up and get back to my god babies 😊. Take care sis and you got this❤.

I felt this. I’m transitioned to the hospital and it almost made me give up on nursing. But I’m going to push through.

Travel nurses only have 2-3 days of training. It sounds like she has to adjust to the learning curve of nursing home vs hospital.

I feel you completely... I just past my NCLEX RN... and 15 years of long term care and corrections and I'm not sure if I'm going to make it in the hospital. I'm actually contemplating the thought of doing the rn to acute care program. When I say your videos come right on time sis... self doubt has no space in our heads.😊

I think you should try a whole new specialty, maybe go to the ER (your original plan) try the ICU , or mother baby. Work on your BSN and be someone’s instructor…. You are an educator. Also it’s going to be hard for you to get in the swing of things at this hospital job because your not there everyday.

This is exactly what I’m going through as a nursing student. I had always felt so excited and engaged in my studying to where now, all of a sudden, I’m like so unmotivated 😞 🤷🏽‍♀️

So, I was able to finish this vid today and would like to clarify and add to my original comment. Firstly, thank you for being open about your experiences as a student, LPN and RN. The motivation is greatly appreciated. I'm currently transitioning from LPN to RN and the struggle is real at times. You'rejourney is inspiring. I also agree, that nursing school shows you how to be academic. The clinicals are beneficial but there aren't many throughout the program. Keep up the great work!

Ive been watching you for so long. Seeing your transition has been so beautiful. I'm looking at the situation objectively and I really know how it feels to have your work performance being so heavy on you. The more comfortable you get, the less you will feel that way. Give it a few more months!

When your mindset is limited “I’m a nurse already” “brandy you know this, nursing is nursing” you’re being too hard yourself and you need to accept that you are a blank slate. You didn’t bridge to RN just to be the same ol’ nurse. Don’t feel ashamed of learning new things. hospital RN is a whole different ball game, critically thinking is different. Sometimes we gotta eat our humble pie. And it’s even harder to learn when you’re a new grad that’s only working prn/float. Start saying “I can learn this” “I’m amazed by how complex this is” “I love learning new things” It takes consistent practice/shifts and studying outside of work.
