Today we're looking at a handful of Nintendo characters that were lost to time, spanning franchises such as Super Mario, Donkey Kong, and The Legend of Zelda. Some of them were featured in games that were cancelled, while others were tossed out before a games final release.

The funny thing is: Whilst Camelot's Warupeachi was shelved by Nintendo Big N allowed Intelligent Systems to make their Shadow Queen to possess Peach and alter her appearance to an evil version of herself just about a mere four years later. Probably because the Shadow Queen isn't ugly. And a one-off too.

There's a bit more to the "Warui-Peach" story. Camelot was struggling a bit to determine a doubles partner for Peach, and asked Nintendo for an idea, and Nintendo suggested Daisy, since she had appeared as Luigi's caddy in NES Open Tournament Golf and thus already had a presence in the sports games. Camelot obviously took the suggestion. Then, after Nintendo gave approval on the creation of Waluigi, Camelot pitched an idea to Nintendo for an evil counterpart not only for Peach, but (and here's the part you don't often hear about) also for Daisy. Nintendo's response to the idea was "We don't want to see that."

There was also an unused animal buddy in Donkey Kong Land - a ram with big horns called Bunkshus. He appeared in an issue of Nintendo Power and was apparently a good way to find bonus levels.

I remember Bunkshus! He was sort of a crossover between your everyday ram and an obscure bipedal fetish I've seen. I think I must've read that Nintendo Power issue from front to back a million times as a kid. And as I would flip through the pages at a rapid rate, I would always pause when I got to the page with Bunkshus. I don't know why I hesitated whenever I gazed at his render. I don't know why I felt a hot flash of guilt when I'd break the eye contact and turn the page. I don't know why I'd excuse myself from a family dinner to go to my room to hypnotically flip through that specific issue of Nintendo Power. All I know is that until today, I thought that Bunkshus was my own little filthy secret. You're the first bloke I've ever met with the same problems as me. If you're ever in the neighborhood I'll buy you a slice of the best artichoke pizza you've ever had bro!

Two things about M09: 1) It looks like an Xbox 360 launch title, not a Nintendo game. 3) It was clearly inspired by some executive going "We need to utilise motion controls" and the game was built from the motion controls, integrating the concept into the scheme, instead of building from a concept and integrating the motion controls into the concept.
