One last comment. This would be a great example of why, as a hiker community, we should all volunteer to do trail maintenance in our local areas. We kinda of owe to ourselves to keep up our local trails so everyone can enjoy the outdoors.

If you ever would like to camp at Fort Ancient State Memorial, Ohio, it's a reasonable price, if not free. Just take a portion of your trip to volunteer with park maintenance. Or you can volunteer a day or week earlier from when you plan to camp.

1...The down side of solo hiking is that no one else is there to collect the spider webs and clear the path for you. The upside is you can do what you want , when you want , where you want and never worry about hurting anyone's feelings. 2...As far as going the wrong direction, If anyone asks , it was such a nice trail I decided to retrace my steps and see the other side of the trees. 3...Being lost , I knew exactly where I was all the time , everyone else didn't know where they were. 4...The 24:39 mark with the Whippoorwill topped it off , now if you only would of had some Owls talking to you during the night.

Chuck Littleton well made points, if you are planning on doing a multi week hike with a friend DONT share a tent. Eat the weight and each carry a tent. You will be with each other all day long so you will want some time apart. I think the best part about being solo is that you aren’t following anyone else’s schedule.
@TimWatsonOutdoors6 жыл бұрын
I will admit the freedom to do whatever I wanted was nice. The Joshes had never stopped me from doing that but this time around I didn't ask anyone anything! :D

Nathan Rieck. Beside backpacking I have spent a lot of time paddling a canoe. When I would set up a trip for myself or a trip requested by some friends. I had one rule , Each person or canoe has to be self contained like they are the only one on the trip. We would be in a group but everyone had a choice of doing something different. In camp we would share some adult beverages and snacks around the campfire. There was always a good variety of snacks and drinks not even thinking of the B.S.
@Oldsparkey6 жыл бұрын
Tim Watson....Going solo you only have three people to please , Me , Myself and I. Trust me , the three of us have gotten into some good arguments about things at times. Especially in some situations like you had on this trip.
@nathanrieck21126 жыл бұрын
Ya whenever I’m on any kind of trip I try to be prepared for most things and be a self contained unit, especially going with friends. You can share some things but it’s nice you have your own stuff and not having to wait around to use a stove or something. That way if we do decide to do something different it’s no problem. If you share a tent than you have to wait for the other person to pack up or whatever. Most of my trips are in groups but it’s always nice to head out on a little day hike or something by yourself. Just don’t do anything stupid -my dad :)

I always have a since of pride when I see a hiking video in my TN woods . You're right about the trail markings in big south fork! If your hiking in the south in fall or winter always carry some Hunter orange vest or something just to be safe . great video!

Hey Tim,I have learned that aeronautical navigation is easier than trail navigation any day. The difference is there are no significant obstructions in the air(excepting restricted areas of course) but on the ground things become obstructed,unclear,not well marked etc.You made the right call by knowing when to say "when".

Dude, great first solo trip! You made it back alive and on time for the reality back home. I'm with you, backpacking is more fun with your buddies but when they can't make it or life gets in the way and all you can do is go by yourself it's still worth getting out there. I've done 5 solo trips and their fun but their more fun when you can enjoy the adventure with others. Travel safe bud!
@standriggs24206 жыл бұрын
Great video! Excellent example of what to do when you are not sure what to do. You 100% made the right call. Always listen to that little voice in your head, and stay out of trouble. Although you technically were not lost since you knew where you were on your phone's GPS, you lost the trail (or it lost you) and bushwhacking is dangerous. Safety first (or a close second, nothing worth doing is completely safe after all). So here is a funny bushwhacking story. Last weekend I was with a Venture crew on the FLT, and we decided to bushwhack about half a mile from our bivouac area to the trail to start off. This was to avoid going on a trail NE and then a road walk SE to the FLT. All we has to do was go due East for half a mile through the woods. Well we put one of the youth in the lead, and we managed to circle around in the woods and ended right back at our bivouac area! It was funny, but points out how dangerous it is to go off trail. It is very easy to drift and circle if you are not following a compass or the sun. All trees look the same out there. Always stay on a trail unless you really know what you are doing. Even then you can get turned around and go in the wrong direction on the trail, but at least you know the trail leads to something! PS - thanks for the 30% discount!

Hey Tim looks like you had a good time even though it was not exactly what you planned. All I can say is that I always have gone solo backpacking and this trip you had reminds me of a trip I took to the Trinity Alps Wilderness in the northern eastern Sierras California and three days in the snow and almost rain Non-Stop and a little getting lost and couldn't find the trail half the time in Trails being washed out. I learned a lot about myself that trip and and definitely more prepared and more capable the next time I go out. Have fun be safe and do some more solo trips they can be very very fun.

If you do not get lost on occasion, you are not trying hard enough, heh. There is satisfaction to be found in being lost, and finding your way back to a place you know, and adrenaline does a body good. Each time I have gotten 'lost' or made a wrong turn, or anytime I am in a sucky situation, I always remember that Clint Eastwood film Heartbreak Ridge and hear him tell me, "Well adapt, improvise and overcome it." And then I do, and each time it gets a little easier. Thanks for sharing your trips that do not go quite as planned. A good learning experience.

I lived in Knoxville, Tenn for about a year or so. Hiked into the mountains on my day off. I only got one day off at a time. I forgot how well everything is marked down there. Up here in WI, there are some little tiny trail markers full of bullet holes, if you are lucky. The campsites are pretty nice by me, though. Not that many, but they have a fire ring and a picnic table. There are already wood ticks galore out. I was going to camp in this one site by the river and do some fishing and 2 girls were camping there. I couldn't believe it because hardly anyone hikes around here.

Brother Tim. I have been there. I was trusting my smart phone while exploring a new area and useing Google maps to get us going back in the right direction. Google maps had me walking in circles for over an hour. Only had about 60 to 90 minutes of light left and we had no idea where we were. Luckily when we sat down to get ready to spend the night I found a compass. I used Google maps and the compass to find the direction I wanted to do in took a berring and bushwacked out in the dark. I just can't express how happy I was to have my 5c's with me. If I had to spend the night I would have been uncomfortable but prepared enough to have a shitty save sleep in the bush. Great video Tim. This has happened to all of us a one point or another. Glad everything turned out ok.

Looking at your Cat-can stove. I was just testing my new Esbit for the first time. My handmade Penny Stove boils 2 cups of water faster on the same amount of fuel (0.5 ounce). I did a quick search on Elias, closest I came was a fisherman. LOL There are tons of test vids! Anyway, my experiment on the Esbit can: I fashioned a top to cover the large open fill hole, taking care not to block the jets. That didn't change boiling time for the worse or the better. Oh, well, I had to tinker around. I got the Esbit because of its lid. I can store alcohol in there and not have to burn it off when I pack up - like I have to with the Penny Stove.

The app works really well and links with your laptop/desktop. Depending on the trail, either you or others can insert way points to help when in the field. Also, you can download the map to work off-line on your phone or if you have a Garmin or other GPS device. I use my Apple I-Phone in conjunction with my Garmin In-Reach and have been able to avoid similar situations that you ran into.

Lost is a matter of perceptive. Once on a solo hike, most of my hikes, I was not lost but then again if you don't have a map, well no more then the NFS stick maps, and you see the main peak you are circling it is all fine til someone put a high alpine swamp in the way.. Hi Tim, don't worry all backpackers get lost at one time or another. FYI I'd be more inclined to take advantage of your Mountain House deal if they would cut the sodium content by 50%. What trail is this? Blue Heron? I did that trail last summer and planning on a 2 night trip on the John Muir Trail there. Great video, keep them coming!!

No didn't go on blue heron. Lots of the JMT (south) and john littleton and laurel fork.

I was just wondering why you don't use the Sawyer coupling to attach the Sawyer squeeze to your smart water bottle and use it as a gravity filter?
@TimWatsonOutdoors6 жыл бұрын
Mostly time, I usually don't want to wait for a gravity feed. I forgot my sports nozzle attachment this time around but it usually fits in the bottle when I squeeze the bag.

When you hang your "bear bag", is that really to keep it away from bears or from rodents? Is the bag system listed on one of your other videos? Thanks! Great video.
@TimWatsonOutdoors6 жыл бұрын
This area chance of bears are low. It's more from rodents. It's not much of a system. Outdoor Products (walmart or amazon) dry bag and Lawson equipment ultraglide bear line.
