Yeah but British Railways shot themselves in the foot as for a steam engine per day it was £18 but a diesel was £68 per day. Then take the oil shortage of the late 60s and diesels get quite expensive.

Financially speaking, coal fired steam locomotives are terribly expensive to operate. For most railways, the transition to diesels was purely financial. Diesels only require one source of fuel, they aren’t as difficult to maintain as steamers, and they are far more fuel-efficient. With that said, steam could be run on a limited scale.

Good one again Sam. Not silly at all mistaking L1 with 2P they are very similar. In fact Hornby converted the tooling of their Triang Hornby L1 available in SR green in 1972 to make it a 2P the LMS version you are showing , which came out in 1973 . The L1 apparently was not a big seller and the feeling was the 2P would be better . Not sure if it's was. I bought one about 20 years ago second hand and it's a nice runner. I think the main difference in moulding is the cab. The 2P has a cut out cab while the L1 had windows
@SamsTrains8 жыл бұрын
+Russell Benton Thanks a lot mate, and yeah It was quite the pit-fall since they're so similar! And I have noticed that the chassis on both the L1 and and the 2P are almost identical! And agreed, I'm not too sure which I prefer - I do think the L1 perhaps has more charm! :) Cheers, Sam :)

Out of all of the lost locomotives you've showed in that video. My all time favorite has to be the ol mighty strong 2-8-2 LNER P2 locomotive. It is ashamed that first they converted the P2 into a 4-6-2 locomotive and named the A2 class and having the class scrapped with none preserved. This would've been the UK's only 2-8-2 passenger locomotive to be on British Railways and the strongest too even though we got the 9F being strong with those 10 driving wheels. But thank christ they are making a new P2 locomotive running number 2007 which is Prince of Wales. I can't wait to see the brand new finished modern P2 locomotive and seeing it come back!

I'm not sure if having the E2 pull two coaches was an intentional parallel to Thomas, but I like it. I can definitely see how you confused the LMS 2Ps with the SR L1s. I got them confused a lot as well, but now I can tell them apart. Now I need to work on finding the differences between the Southern L1s and the South Eastern & Chatham's D1s and E1s.
@SamsTrains8 жыл бұрын
+Russell Streak Thanks a lot for the comment - haha, it wasn't intentional but I could pretend it was! She's only light, and won't pull much more than that! 12:44 *no 3041 **_The Queen,_** originally named **_James Mason,_** was an example of this class allocated to Royal Train duties.* *Number 3046 **_Lord of the Isles_** has enjoyed a certain amount of celebrity, having been chosen as the prototype for a Tri-ang model locomotive. Since then the engine has also been modelled by Brio and Matchbox. In 2006, Hornby also produced a limited edition of the same model, this time bearing the name **_Lorna Doone._* Footnote : WikiPedia *"None of the original class survive, but a static replica of The Queen was commissioned by Tussauds for the Railways and Royalty exhibition at Windsor and Eton Central railway station. The replica loco was completed in December 1982 and displayed outside Steamtown in January 1983 (where it was constructed), before being transported by road to Windsor on 12 January 1983 and arriving on 14 January. The main frames, footplate, 'boiler', smokebox, cab and splashers were fabricated by Babcock's of Tipton. The tender was modified from an LBSCR C2x tender. Parts from a GWR tender, that came from the Dumbleton Hall Preservation Society, were used to provide the wheels for the front bogie and the real wheels. The top halves of the driving wheels do not exist, and were cast from 2 quarters, being bolted together to make a half, and the driving wheels also don't sit on the rail, so the loco could be wheeled into position on its front bogie and rear wheels. Some boiler fittings were obtained from the Great Western Society and sandblasted, and the dome and safety valve bonnet were made by Newcastle Metal Spinners. Tussaud's fitted smoke and steam generators, so steam was emitted from the cab, whistles, safety valves and smoke from the chimney. A sound unit was also fitted.* *The engine remains there, but the tender was scrapped to make more space for the shopping centre occupying that station building. The Bluebell Railway Atlantic Group purchased the axleboxes, springs and the complete wheel sets from the tender for use in their newbuild Atlantic project.*

The Fowler 2-6-4 tank was one of the few LMS engines that Stanier thought was satisfactory (along with the Crab, the Royal Scot and the Baby Scot or Patriot). You can draw a direct line of strong influence from this engine to Stanier's 2-6-4 tanks, to the Fairburn 2-6-4 tank and finally the BR standard 2-6-4 tank as well as the Northern Irish 2-6-0 and 2-6-4 tank (Jeeps) and finally the BR standard Class 4 4-6-0.

The Patriot class were known as Baby Scots having the same chassy as the Scot with the boiler designed to improve the LNWR Claughtons. Stanier took the Baby Scot and put his new tapered boiler on. Unfortunately, the original boiler inspired by the GW low superheat and the draughting meant that the new locomotive, the Jubilee, was initially inferior to the Baby Scot and required a lot of work to make it a successful locomotive (not seriously improved till they increased superheating to the LMS levels not the GW).

The E2 tank engines where actually Technically prototypes because they were only examples they weren’t actually full-fledged locomotives yet the 10 that were built were only examples of what they would look like if production was to start on their class I believe and Thomas is actually the only one of his class to have extended side tanks because the E2 class weren’t meant for long trip Journey’s they were meant for short distance freight trains and shunting.

+GWR23 Studios Thanks very much mate - and I'm gutted that I made this video before you sent me those - It'd have been great to have included them! I might still post them on Facebook though (If you're happy for me to!) because I bet people would love to see them! :D How are things with your trains by the way?? Cheers mate, Sam :)
@JaeV20008 жыл бұрын
Sam'sTrains you can put them on facebook by all means. and I may be moving my model railway into the loft because my room space is getting smaller, and thanks for asking
@donsharpe57865 жыл бұрын
This model of the 2P is a sort of amalgam of the L1 and 2P which were not dis-similar externally. The cab is incorrect for a 2P as are the chimney and dome. The L1 was probably the better engine in that its valves were better than the 2P. Although the 2P wasn't a brilliant engine, it was useful and was quite strong pulling on hills. When used as a pilot engine, the 2P was able to pull the heavy train and train engine which was slipping and accelerate it while going up a bank. It was liked in Scotland and on the Somerset & Dorset.

That's very interesting Don - thanks for the info! They did use the same chassis for both models - so they must have known how similar they were! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Thomas wasn't based off of the E2. Well, not entirely, at least. Thomas was based off of an E2 with extended side tanks, but you were pretty close. XD
@SamsTrains8 жыл бұрын
+Biscuit Cat Productions Yeah, I guess it's the same thing - the extended tanks were the second class of E2 - I'm not sure if Hornby made a model of that though - maybe? Cheers, Sam :)

@SamsTrains8 жыл бұрын
+Lewis Shields Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed the video and didn't find it too dull! All my tips are to not let it get too long, and try to show popular locos to start with! I edit with adobe premier, but most editing software will do the job! :) Cheers mate, Sam

there are still 2 2-6-4 steam tank locomotives preserved that are running on the haverthwaite and lakeside railway.

@gavinshell89827 жыл бұрын
Sam'sTrains the 2-6-4 tanks at the L&H railway are Fairburn tanks not the Fowler type. the Fowler tank newbuild is to be built by the LMS Patriot project once 5551 has been completed.
@ScaniaVabis5806 жыл бұрын
Yes they are "Fairburn" 2-6-4 tanks, designed by Fairburn as opposed to Fowler.

@Marco-xz9sc7 жыл бұрын
If they have the same name and number as one of the orginals locos they are a replica, but if it is like tornado where non of the other members of the class had it its name or number it is a genuine member of the class

that means the new patriot is a genuine member of the class
