Hi Sam, Nice vid. Which engines were preserved was a bit of a lottery. BR made a list of locos to officially preserve, which formed the basis of the national collection, but even being added to the list didn't assure survival, for example a Claude Hamilton was ear marked for keeping, but a suitable individual candidate wasn't found (although a replacement, an ex GER E4 2-4-0 was saved in her place). Same with the Highland Railway Small Ben 4-4-0s, one, Ben Adler, was reserved and stored, but BR reversed the preservation order and she was cut in 1966 after spending several years in storage. As for private preservation, the locos mainly came either from ones sold into private industry, which were mainly tank locos, or the ones lucky enough to be sent for scrapping at Woodham Bros, Barry, South Wales. Where as most scrap yards cut up locos as soon as they arrived, Woodhams had a vast number of steel wagons to cut up, we are talking thousands, so the locos they brought were stored for future scrapping after the wagon contract had ended. However by the mid 70's the preservation movement was in full steam (pun intended), and Dia Woodham began to sell them to heritage railways rather than cut them up. Not all made it, but most did. Because Woodhams scrappers came mainly from former GWR and LMS region sheds, it was mainly GWR and LMS designs that passed through the yard into private hands. Far few ex Southern types survived that way and only one former LNER loco, a Thompson B1. There were a few locos brought direct from BR by private Buyers, such as the LNER A2 Blue Peter, but these were rare occurrences. May be if yards like Cashmores at Guide Bridge, or Scottish Metals at Springburn had not been so quick on the gas torch more classic LNER engines might have survived. One ex LNWR 0-8-0 has survived, G2 49395, which is currently at the Shildon museum, have recently been operational on the East Lancs Rly. Keep up thhe good work Jon

A county 4-6-0 new-build engine, County of Glamorgan, is under construction at this moment in time. I read about this in one of the Steam Railway Magazine issues. I think, if I'm right, the article said the new-build engine was being constructed either at Didcot Railway Centre or another preserved railway. So, yes, the 4-4-0 County engines were all lost, but one of the 4-6-0 type is being brought back to life. Therefore, the 4-6-0 County engine class hasn't been lost altogether. I'm not into the 4-6-0 County Class engines all that much, but they are of GWR status. The one type of GWR 4-6-0 tender engine, which does put a cheerful grin on my face, is the Manor Class. 7822 Foxcote Manor, whom I have a Bachmann 00 gauge model of, is the one Manor who will always make me jump for joy. I'm sure the real Broome Manor would have done so as well, if she hadn't been scrapped.

The preservation movement was not really interested in freight engines in the 1960s. So those that have survived are either part of the National collection, purchased from Barry or - like 48773 and 92203 - bought from BR at the very end of steam. The Claude Hamilton was a sad loss and was not considered for preservation as it had been heavily rebuilt by Gresley from its original appearance. A G2 survives in the National collection, as do two Fairburn 2-6-4Ts which were a slightly changed development of the Stanier 2-6-4T.

The saddest destruction of steam locomotives you've showed in this video is the TURBO POWER Turbomotive because of it being built back into a Princess class and was involve in a huge accident or crash I don't know what caused this though but it is a pretty sad story :(

Railroads here in the USA dieselized first. The diesel was introduced to the USA in the 1920 and in the mid to late 30s, they started showing their presense. After WW2, Their plan to dominate the mainline began and this plan was completed in 1962.

@ScaniaVabis5807 жыл бұрын
Sam'sTrains.. Yes she/he (i have always called loco's she but being called a Duke i'm not so sure) anyway... Yes the she... Lets call it the duke was built as a replacement for the ill fated rebuilt turbomotive, sadly the duke had a significant issue which plagued it from start to finish with BR only rectified in preservation and that was a poorly matched blastpipe for the size and demand of the machine. In preservation it has since been fitted with the same setup as an a4 which has transformed it's capabilities.

there is a G2 locomotive preserved. Number 49395
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I've seen that one - this was a G2A though, a different variant - and none were preserved (I think!) Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@Spud6076 жыл бұрын
G2A STILL EXISTS. The G2A has been nicknamed The Super D because they were superheated.
@SamsTrains6 жыл бұрын
Ahh of course! Yes that makes sense! But the preserved one is a G2 I believe, not the G2A variant! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

I got a idea for a video which involves our turbomotive friend, how about you do a unusual or strange train running session.
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob, yeah that's a cool idea - I'll have to collect some more unusual models for that! :D Cheers, Sam :)

I’m not a huge fan of Thompson. He hated Gresley designs for some reason and he built some pretty poor designs (like the L1). People say that Thompson’s hate for Gresley was the reason why the P2 was rebuilt into a pacific. Lucky for us a new one is being built

haha absolutely - I think many people feel the same way! All the best, Sam :)

Thanks mate - me too, those are both golden locos! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Correct me if I'm wrong but it seemed rather uncommon for locos to have two bogeys at the front be so far apart like on the 440 county class
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Yeah maybe - I think I see what you mean there, it is a fairly unusual look! Cheers, Sam :)

Sad thing all these steam locomotives being scrapped. I’m from America, and it was pretty bad over here as well, but our railways weren’t nationalized so they could keep there steam locomotives as long as they wanted, the Norfolk and Western kept theres well into the 60’s But I still don’t understand dieselization because even though they were cheaper and easier to maintain, but over here, I have seen 4 locos at the front, 2 in the middle, and 3 at the back, while just one Big Boy or Challenger could handle it just fine.
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's terrible - and yeah I heard lots got scrapped there too! At least we have the ones that were saved though! :3 Thanks for watching, Sam :)

TrainsAndThangs Beans... Check out Barry Scrapyard on wiki, i live just down the road from there.. British Railways sent 297 steam locos there (one of many Scrapyards contracted by BR at the time to dispose of our treasured steamers) 213 of the locos escaped the torch and were bought by preservation groups around the uk, around half that number have been restored to working order, not taking into account the number of loco's that were kept for the national collection that thankfully never went anywhere near a Scrapyard. Over here we have about 10 recreations / newbuilds ongoing of long scrapped steam Locomotives, just limited by funds, the cost for one newbuild, a 2-8-2 P2 is estimated to cost around £5 000 000.

R.I.P. P2, they were so good, more powerful than the Duchesses I believe, I don’t like that they are making a replica of Cock O’ the North, it seems like it’s dishonoring her, I like 2007, though. I personally want to resurrect a Crosti 9f or the MR Lickey Banker.
