it still astounds me that people dont make the connection between this scene and the scene where kid Ben Linus sees his dead mother. Its the entire reason that Ben was 'chosen' and considered 'special'. MiB can talk to dead people, is considered special while Jacob isnt Ben seemingly talks to a dead person his mother who died when he was a baby - just like Mib did - and so is considered special and is propelled to Leader of The Others by Richard. Although Jacob later realises he was never special and makes this clear to him in the statue. In reality Locke was the special one whilst Ben was in many ways another Jacob, a loyal daddys boy who wasnt special and wanted nothing more than to please his daddy (Jacob) but who got no love in return and was ignored. Jacobs relationship with Mother was the exact same. Jacob was always of the opinion MiB was the one meant to become protector because he was special. This is why when looking for potential candidates he also looked for those who were special - special people are meant to take his job. The job he never should have had. The position of Leader of The Others was essentially Protector-in waiting. So this is why Richard was always looking for special people to become leader, they were the most promising candidates to replace Jacob. Except Jacob got it wrong most of the time, and ended up with leaders like Eloise, Widmore and Ben who had no real depper connection to the island. Ben thought he was special, was told he was, all because Jacob mistook him for having the same abilities as the boy in black

In reality Jacob is in some ways responsible and possibly considered as the antagonist by killing his brother. There flawed people, both Jacob and MIB, Jacob’s arrogant and greedy, whereas MIB lacks attention, it makes him disconnected to his mother and brother, resulting in him wanting to find ways off the island.

When she said "she is not your mother, I am"... it was almost disturbing coz she was telling the truth, and the little boy felt it. You know, truth tlike that never let you go once you know it. @MMMCVIDEO I always considered after watching 'The Candidate' and 'Across the Sea', as well as Hurley's journeys throughout the second half of the series, that the dead (Claudia, in particular) were feeding MIB information just as they were Hurley. And so, MIB's specialness was simply Hurley's ability and him being talked to by the dead. He had his own agenda, sure, but this ability and his dead-friends (or perhaps only Claudia) helped him complete it.

Notice her agelessness, her dire warnings about what happens if you enter the cave (knowledge through experience?), her amazing capabilities in terms of sealing the well over and destroying the village (parallel that image with the destruction at the temple), consider the way she was killed (stabbed in the chest before even speaking), etc.

I think he is kinda like Parallax from Green Lantern, the energy source already existed but he became an embodiment of that power, he controls it and it's part of him. Jacob explains the island as though it's whole purpose is to stop "the darkness" from escaping, which to me implies that the dark energy what turned his brother evil in the first place.

Thanking her killer for doing the deed. That's what mother was, a guardian who suffered the same fate as ol' smokey.

@M4ttM3224 A better question; is it possible that, while they were already flawed in various ways, Jacob had actually influenced events in their lives? MIB tells Saywer that for a very long time Jacob had been pushing him, pulling strings as if he were a puppet in order to have him make choices he otherwise might not have made in order for him to be on that island. Jacob's only reasoning for selecting them were for their flaws, but some he approached as just children.

Theory 2: Mother is The only protecter of the island for an unknown amount of time. She has the abilities of the light energy and the dark energy to protect the island at all costs. Either by accident or like Jacob does in the show, brings Claudia’s ship to the island on purpose. She knows she has twins and intends on passing on the roles of light protector and darkness protector to them, raising them as her own. She cannot allow them to leave the island because there has to be a balance between the 2 energy’s. the darkness cannot be separated from the light. Inevitably this plan backfires and mib learns the truth. He feels betrayed and kills mother ;who no longer is immortal after passing on 1 role to Jacob. Jacob then knocks mib unconscious and he drifts into the light cave where the darkness is kept at bay. His want to leave the island+hatred+anger other things fuse with the darkness and he becomes the physical embodiment of the darkness, the smoke monster. Jacob is already the embodiment of light. Both by now are immortal. Both the darkness and MIB are trapped on the island willing to do whatever it takes to escape.

I'll also add Hurley's behaviour in the epilogue. Like I said before, neither scenario can be entirely ruled out. And I guess that strengthens both our sides. So to each their own, I guess.

It's crazy if you think about it. Practically the entire story happened due to a coincidence. It's near-impossible to get to the island. They only stranded there by sheer, improbable coincidence. That ship landed on the island and set a massive chain of events into motion.

There was no smoke monster. Jacob tossing his brother into the source before the cork system, a brother who could not die by Jacob's hands, caused the dark energy of the Island to fuse with the brother's consciousness producing Smokey. Like Yin-Yang. Yin is the glowing light and Yang is the dark counterpart. MiBs obsessive desire to leave the Island became infused with the Yang energy. Yang is bound to the Island, Yang is bound to the Light. The ONLY way Yang could leave the Island is if it turned off/destroyed the Light (Yin). But this means killing the protector (Jacob) and anyone else who would take his place (candidates) and destroying the Island but also destroying all of existence, because that Yin-Yang is the source of all life...a little of it exists in every human being. And if that Light goes out here, it goes out everywhere!

Theory 1: Mother is the physical embodiment of the island itself. Always protecting its energy, while keeping the Light energy and Dark energy in balance. But the island is lonely? so it kills claudia and raises her children as her own, hoping that they can become the new perfect balance of Light and Dark, essentially both protecting the island. Claudia’s people discover the islands energy power and plan to use it for their own purposes and benefits. This makes the island feel threatened and she deals with the threat in the most extreme way by killing them… she makes Jacob the protector of the Light, planning to make MIB protector of the Dark? But this plan obviously fails. Things go completely wrong and the 2 argue with each other and start this whole conflict. MIB learns it killed his real mother, feels betrayed and kills Mother. Jacob then knocks MIB unconscious drifting him into the cave. His want to leave+hatred+anger other things combine with the darkness and he becomes the physical embodiment of the darkness. Jacob is already the physical embodiment of light. A new balance of the 2 forces is made that cannot be separated or else.

help4343 But did he though? Smoke Monster took control of John Locke's identity after his dead body was brought to the island, but his dead body was still there, dead. It stole his identity but wasn't actually John Locke. When Jacob killed MiB, the smoke monster appears but Jacob later finds MiB's dead body by the riverside. Seems to me that smoke monster existed before Jacob and MiB and merely stole MiB's identity when he died on the island, the same way it eventually did with John Locke. The smoke monster is more than just MiB. It's something that's existed far longer than either of them and is far more mysterious than people seem to give it credit for. In a scene where Jacob is talking to Richard explaining Jacobs purpose, he mentions that the island is a seal which prevents evil from escaping from hell. He mentions without the island and someone protecting it, the evil would escape and spread, infecting the world. That is why Jacob is so obsessed with protecting the island and bringing others to the island to find a candidate to protect the island when he is gone. The smoke monster could be some abstract evil identity from hell which is trying to escape it's confinement on the island to spread evil upon the world (hence why it's so obsessed about leaving and implanted that idea into MiB's mind when it appeared as his mother and started talking about what's beyond the sea).

There's no real mystery there, he could have easily one back and forth the same way as anyone else could. Able to appear as a ghost isn't just a trick only Jacob has, but the ashes thing - well...that was certainly something different.
