@@richardb2652 OK you're right. In their era, nothing was as heavy as this. They were pioneers and I love them, but given where we are now, I can't see how they could still be considered metal? I think labels that identify music are dynamic based on the era.

KK Downing had a heavy hand in writing this song. The 6 part lead swap between Tipton and Downing is just killer. They swapped the solo three times each and then came together for a joint end. Watching this live they swapped the solos and the rhythm as they went . This came out the year I was a Junior in High School, I bought this album the day it came out.

@@SuperTugz Hell of an album. Today I was listening to Judas Priest on shuffle. Trial by Fire came on and I thought, Ah! Stained Class. Nice. Oh wait... same thing with Painkiller. For moment I forgot which album I was listening to. Been listening Painkiller and then Invincible Shield on repeat today, only interrupted by a few others here and there. I got my tickets! 1.5 Vienna. Been 10 years and only once with Richie. He really came into his own. I love KK, it's why I play Flying Vs. The thing about priest is that every one of their albums has its own sound and style. This entire album is perfect but that intro came directly from the pits of Tartarus. In 2022 I saw Priest at the Met. They opened with one shot at glory. When Sentinel came on, the entire atmosphere instantly changed. The room went silent. In the song both Downing and Tipton play the same riff. On stage they doubled up on one guitar and added a new melody with the second one. Everyone was silent for the intro. Rob’s vocals were amazing the entire show, but nothing compared to the last few minutes of this song. His highs stretched at least half an octave higher, and for that last note he unloaded into a full on black metal shriek. He only gets better with age. Ps I also got to see a 75 year old Glenn Tipton with Parkinson’s walk out and solo.

The Sentinel is the blueprint and the archetype of a great, epic and perfect metal song. To me it is probably the greatest overall metal song ever. The intro that returns in the middle of the song, the sound, the solo, the spoken dramatic part, the ending and above all Rob Halford's voice... I am 60 and I have been a metalhead since 1976 when I was 13 and I sure am not stuck in the past and I love all metal genres and the heavier and more extreme the better.

The reaction George and Ryan are giving here is almost exactly what I expected - really excited about certain portions of the guitars, and lukewarm on the rest of the song (even though they keep emphasizing how much they 'appreciate' the rest of the song). I was a subscriber to their Patreon channel for a while because I always respected how they were experiencing these metal classics so differently from me and were also able to articulate that well. I unsubscribed after their reviews started getting too predictable. The truth is that they have a strong appreciation for the instrumentals but not as much for the vocal style of people like Halford and Dickinson (and similar bands). This is why they never really liked Iron Maiden songs, and have had mixed reactions to many Priest songs (for those asking for an 'Electric Eye' or 'Dreamer Deceiver/Deceiver' review, they already did these on Patreon and again were very lukewarm on both songs). Most Maiden and Priest fans are fans primarily because of the vocals and how those vocals are complemented by the rest of the band. That vocal style had a very heavy influence on many genres within metal. Without this appreciation, George and Ryan are really are not experiencing these songs in the same ways that most fans are. There's nothing wrong with that, and I still enjoy listening to their reactions, but it was a little disappointing for me to finally come to terms with the fact that they were never going to be able to experience Halford and Priest as fully as I do.

51yr old metal head here. mad RESPECT for how you 2 have such a knowledgeable unbiased breakdown of music! calling power ballad metal medium thrash is so appropriate as you can feel what influenced thrash metal bands. Glen Tipton & KK Downing are pioneers of bands with 2 lead guitarists. as far as Priest goes you've probably covered songs like Screaming For Vengeance, Turbo Lover, Painkiller... here's a couple suggestions for some somewhat obscure extremely talented Hard Rock/Metal from the late 80's-early 90's: Future World by Pretty Maids, Black Wind, Fire, and Steel by Manowar, The Headless Children by WASP, Hypnotized by Heathen as for some traditional Brazilian music influenced metal checkout Jumpdaf*ckup, Back to the Primitive, Tree of Pain all 3 by Soulfly lastly, true metal torch bearers the modern band composed of 3 young brothers from KC: Hammerhedd (any of their songs) enjoyed the video. subbed ✌️🐝➕

Devil's horns to the sky when I saw this. I love this song. I saw Priest in 82 and Rob was in his prime vocally. He sounded just like this. Right off the record great. Mind blowing vocals.
