Opeth and Gojira have a thing in common; they are not ones to shy away from playing the absolute heck out of a riff if it's tasty enough. Some bands seem like they are scared to stick to the same groove too long; but these guys....they know when they have the Gold, and they let it shiiiine.
@BigHomieSteveTheMetalHead2 жыл бұрын
I agree, many people complain about things being too repetitive, but I see it a different way. Having a great repetitive riff will create an atmosphere and even has the capability of putting you into a trance, it also allows you to add little layers in the background that build up to a climactic moment. Tool is also a masterclass in how to use repetitive riffs correctly, those guys are on another level lol.

"O-muthafuggin-peth, man." I had heard of Opeth before, but never really checked them out until I saw your reaction to "Ghost of Perdition." Once I gave them another chance, Opeth quickly became one of my favorite bands of all time. "Harlequin Forest" is the song I listened to immediately after watching your reaction, and it is still my favorite Opeth song to this day. I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. Perhaps it's time to check out some of their earlier stuff? The albums "Still Life" and "My Arms, Your Hearse" are filled to the brim with AAA songs. You pretty much can't go wrong, regardless of which ones you pick. If I had to insist, though, "The Moor," "Godhead's Lament," and "April Ethereal" would be at the top of my list. EDIT: I agree with the other comments, though. Anything before "MA,YH" would probably be too rough (recording-wise) for your tastes. Another EDIT: Opeth's "Serenity Painted Death" has a 'transition' better than most metal bands could hope to create. Anybody who has heard the song knows precisely which one I'm talking about. "Holographic Universe" by Scar Symmetry would be another excellent selection for you guys, I think.

Yes! Requested this song way back when they first reacted to Opeth. Haven't even watched yet, but this is great! How can they not like this track? (clearly not a Patreon member lol)

Every Opeth song is composed of songs within a song. You never know where it's going to go. When you think they are going right, they go left.

Oh this was a pleasant surprise that popped up. Been casually longing for this. I've been listening to this song a lot lately and trying to learn it on guitar by ear atm. Almost finished just a few riffs to go. Not learning it from the beginning but jumping around on it going from easiest to hardest. The way he comes in with the growl with that riff in the background always soooo good. Right after the line "If I'm haunted, then you will see"... And so it comes🤘

The transitions between the technical sections and the groove sections are so subtle it would be easy to miss them, but they are definitely there. Very subtle feel changes.

It amazes me how you get the escense of the song inmediatly..... It may not be your musical genre, but you get it well..... It shows how people who love music will always get along no matter which genre they listen to.

I would love to hear lepar affinity. Very first Opeth tune I ever heard and had me hooked. Such a great opener for such an iconic masterpiece.

Opeth have more perfect songs on this album alone than most bands have in their whole discography. They had a run from late 90s to late 00s releasing one masterpiece after another, I personally think it's unprecedented in the world of metal. Words can't describe how good they were

I was always against the "cookie monster" growls until I found this band 20 years ago.....Awesome band. If you have never see the Live At Shepards Bush DVD do yourself a favor and watch to see their full potential....

Life can get busy. Great review and song. As a musician outside of everything in my life including family I still try to dedicate and hour a day to listen to music or an album. It’s so healthy at times. Keep rocking guys!

You guys are getting into those odd time signatures more and more each time you come back to this band! That's how opeth gets you. The more you listen the more you get how talented these guys are. Another thing to keep in mind; those time signatures, and a lot of defining factors in progressive metal all stem from deep roots in jazz. If you're into jazz, and you're into metal, opeth is for you! Opeth has been my favorite band since I was about 13. I'm 34 now. They have been making music almost as long as I've been alive. Long live opeth!

Such a fantastic album - every song is an amazing journey - Deliverance also has an amazing ending groove!

I'm swedish so quite biased here. But Opeth and Mikael Åkerfeldt in particular is one of the best song writers ever in my opinion. Not only are the songs great but some of the melodies are out of this world. My most listen to band in the 2010's according to Spotify.

Same fren. I had a period of time where they were on 24/7. Ghost Reveries, Still Life, and My Arms Your Hearse are my favorites. Everything up to Ghost Reveries is 10/10 perfect.

To me, Opeth's music is meant to be experienced as an album. When you have an hour to just escape - put the album on and disappear in it.

If you ever react to Opeth again I hope you do a song from their album Watershed, I don't think you've heard anything from it yet. It's one of their best albums in my opinion and felt like Opeth on top of their game. Heir Apparent, The Lotus Eater, Burden, Porcelain Heart or Hessian Peel would all be great songs to react to. Also you guys gotta check out Cult Of Luna, their transitions are also butta smooth! Nightwalkers, Ghost Trail, I: The Weapon, In Awe Of, Finland, The Fall... any of these songs would be great ones to start with.

I second this. Watershed is my favourite Opeth album

I'm 100% with you, including the Cult of Luna, and I'd add to that Greater Call or Chevron with Julie Christmas.
@travistotle2 жыл бұрын
Strong disagree. I like Watershed but it is one of Opeth's most challenging and non-inclusive listening experience albums, especially when you hear those songs for the first time. When people recommend songs for George and Ryan, TRY TO PUT YOURSELVES IN THEIR HEADS AND THE KIND OF VIBE OF THE MUSIC THEY LIKE, don't just pick your favorite albums. They like groove, and strong rhythm with a nice melody alongside it, Watershed has some of their most jarring transitions and obtuse arrangements in the band's history, I doubt they would like a single song off of that album.
@eternalwings2 жыл бұрын
Best Opeth album imo. Perfectly balanced between the heavy and soft sides of Opeth. Watershed has a few jarring transitions but also a lot of sections that flow into one another smoothly and organically, and there are a number of sweet grooves on the record.
@toamcdohl2 жыл бұрын
@@travistotle Yeah, if Ghost of Perdition, Bleak, and Harlequin Forest -- highlights off of much groovier and straightforwardly rockin' prog-death records than Watershed, and far more accessible to boot -- are bordering on being too challenging, there's not gonna be much for them on Watershed. Coil might be worth checking out since it's a breezy 3 minutes of relatively unique Opeth material, but even the clean vocal stuff like Burden and Porcelain Heart has a level of stop-start abruptness and somewhat patience-testin' proggin' out that I think would keep them from making their playlists. That said, I do hope they react to The Lotus Eater or something eventually, just because it'd probably be a fun and silly watch.

When I started listening to metal, I used to pause this song and move on when the growling started 😂. My ear def started to develop an appreciation for the mood it creates and also the different types of growling/distorted vocals out there

Ghost Reveries is my favorite album of all time. To me, it's a start to finish experience where every song melds perfectly into the next one, telling a complete story. You guys are getting GOOD at articulating your feelings on time signature changes and noticing shifts in the musicality define Opeth and other bands (specifically in one of the bridges where you both noted that the drummer Martin Lopez was playing more muted, but still giving such distinct feel to the softness). Watching you guys discover and dive into music that has been dear to me for decades is one of the best feelings on the planet, and I'm so thankful you guys do this for me to experience.

Opeth is the Greatest ever! This song is one of my favorites so many transitions and changes in melody, voice, etc.. Blended up nicely!
@bigounce5622 жыл бұрын
This is one of my favorite Opeth songs, and I go back to the My Arms, Your Hearse era. You can REALLY hear how their transitions became more smooth over the years. The first two albums are just riff salads; not bad but immature in composition. Still Life and Blackwater Park are probably their peak, but their recent stuff has some gems.
