You picked up on the basic theme of the lyrics: a relationship falling apart. The key part you're missing is the context of the band. Fleetwood Mac, just before the recording of this and the previous album, consisted of Mick Fleetwood (drums), John (bass) and Christine McVie (keys, vocals), Lindsey Buckingham (guitar, vocals), and Stevie Nicks (vocals). Of the five, four were romantically linked: John and Christine McVie were married, and Buckingham and Nicks were in a long-term non-marital relationship. Just before the recording of this album, both of those relationships collapsed. You know how they say great art often comes from a place of pain? Well, that's exactly the story of this album. This album was fueled by an unbelievable amount of drama, and it seethes with emotional pain. I mean, imagine having a nasty breakup, and then having to see that person again almost right away for days upon days in the confines of a recording studio... This is one of the songs Nicks wrote in response to her breakup with Buckingham. Buckingham wrote some songs of his own, including "Go Your Own Way". The breakup was Nicks's decision, not Buckingham, and his bitterness about that is really clear in his lyrics. You guys should really react to "Go Your Own Way" soon. It would be cool to see you guys compare these two songs, and pit the two perspectives against each other. PS: Any live video of these songs is worth watching to see how much tension there is on stage between Nicks and Buckingham. Sometimes, they look like all that's keeping them from attacking the other is the need to stay close to their microphone.

Stevie Nicks had the most erotic sounding voice. You can hear Christine McVie's voice. Some songs on the album are fronted by Stevie and some are fronted by Christine. I remember seeing her as Christine Perfect, singing with the band Chicken Shack in the late 60s. I also saw Fleetwood Mac when Peter Green was with them and before the girls joined.

When Fleetwood Mac were recording their _Rumors_ album, they were all in emotional turmoil. Mick Fleetwood (drummer) was divorcing his wife (not in the band), John McVie (bass guitar) and Christine McVie (keyboards, vocals) were having a major split in their marriage, and Stevie Nicks (vocals) was ending an 8-year relationship with Lindsey Buckingham (lead guitar). The whole album is full of turmoil (in a good way for the listeners). When Christine McVie wrote "You Make Lovin' Fun" it wasn't about her husband. "The Chain" is the only song where every band member wrote some part of it. I read somewhere that Stevie and Christine shared a hotel room near the studio because they didn't want to go home with their men, but felt that the band was important and the album was important. The group stayed together for several more albums after this one, even if their personal lives had fallen apart.

If it's both, yeah. If it's mostly Stevie, then in studio, the technique is called "tracking"... something the Beatles seiously pushed the envelope on (using tape decks, long before digital) back in the early sixties. That vocal example wasn't "innovative"... just damn, damn well done harmonicaly. 😮 Have a listen to the end of Berlin's Masquerade with Teri Nunn singing against herself (x3). eta: and my first love back in '79 was a 90% Stevie clone... What a fool you are Beckie. She wouldn't even be in the band were it not for that "Sorry Ass man", BTW He pretty much made that band as evidenced by the fact that after Stevie threw her tantrum acting like a spoiled child and had him fired they tried to replace Lindsey with 2 guitarists and even that didn't work. I used to like Stevie Nicks but she destroyed one of my favorite bands with her pettiness. Personally I think she was pissed because he spent the last year touring with Christine McVie!

Many of the songs Stevie Nicks wrote we're about her long time boyfriend, Lindsey Buckingham, and their turbulent relationship. He is the guitarist in Fleetwood Mac. He wrote several about her too (You can go your own way). Imagine going on stage every night and singing songs written about you and your messed up relationship. That's one reason their songs have so much emotion. Can't go wrong with Fleetwood Mac. So many hits, great band. Worth your time to dig into their catalog

Perfect starter song for them. One of their best. Stevie Nicks is the singer in this song but frontman Lindsey Buckingham sings a lot of their songs as well and they sing together in many tunes also. Yes, Stevie is female and Lindsey is male, go figure! Buckingham is one of the most underrated guitarist there is and Nicks is one of the best vocalist ever. A band that had many great hits, a staple in classic rock.
