That is literally the plot of the anime. Ash is late, misses out on the Starters, and is given Pikachu, because it's all Oak had on hand. And this is before Pikachu became the icon it is now, and was just a random Pokemon in Viridian Forest.

Fun fact: there's unique dialogue in SwSh if you lose the first battle against Hop _but_ the only way to do it is to stall against his Wooloo because his starter will never finish yours off or even run out of PP

@@luckluca8982 if you only use Leer or Growl or whatever vs Wooloo, it only has Tackle and will KO your starter before you run out of PP. That's the only way you can lose that battle

You only fight Bede like twice before learning he's a mentally derranged orphan, so it makes it less fun. Marnie is just a very chill gall, and Hop gets sadder every time you beat his ass. I don't think they're bad characters, but it's really not fun to beat down an orphan, a kid trying to get out of his brother's shadow and someone who is nothing but kind and chill with you

1:07 I’ll say it as many times as it takes, but the only battle that is tough because your rival chooses the advantageous starter is the first one. Afterwards, they all do the same and try to form a balanced team. The same that most players try to do. At that point, it’s all about team composition and synergy. Blue/Gary isn’t any more of a threat than any other rival beyond that first battle, up until the final one, depending on what kind of team us players put together.

Antagonism is not the best form of rivalry, like Blue and Silver’s paths took them despite what most Pokémon fans seem to believe (And honestly I don’t think Silver is truly *your* rival). Neither is being too friendly honestly, at least not in the way of XY, but that’s where Nemona strikes her balance. Being so incredibly competitive it pumps you up, being just supportive enough and being both your first and final challenge that you want to beat at her best because she’s already stood at the top from the very beginning and has just been lowering herself to your level the entire time. Not because she’s a bully or a criminal, but because she’s actually your rival, someone who pushes you to be better each time you meet.
