I think his family made him a better person than he was in this episode. This version of Jane is who he would have become if he'd never met Angela and had never had a child.

@@madanperera5097 It's not necessary at all. And it's objectively shown that Jane is a terrible human being without his purpose of hunting Red John. Sure it may have been 'selfish' for LIsbon to show Jane the way she did, but at the end of the day (and in a future episode he states) it's what he would have wanted her to do. Jane is Jane. Everyone knows that. But his character was much more than his drive to hunt Red John. Throughout the show it's expressly shown how patently important his family is to him and for him to forget them like that? He would have lived a terrible life until (maybe) one day he remembered them...but he would have been devoid of both of the biggest pieces of character development he'd had throughout the show.

I believe she had to do it, because not doing it would have much worse results. Red John surely would not be happy that Jane has returned to the "dirty, money- grubbing fraud" that he was before and he probably would have killed Jane or the team. Still, a heartbreaking thing that Lisbon had to see him re-experience the worst moment of his life. Definitely a side of Jane she never wanted to see. :(

Lisbon did it because she had to do it, even though it broke her heart knowing the pain it would cause him. In one episode Jane told her " I'm always going to save you". They always saved and protected at each other even from themselves no matter how much it cost them personally. Lisbon repeatedly told Jane she would stop him from killing RJ not to save RJ but to save Jane, from himself and he expected nothing less from her . Sooner or later Jane would've have been triggered and remembered, and he would consider it a monstrous betrayal of their trust and relationship if Lisbon hadn't of done it.

Lisbon did what she had to do. And I do believe Jane would have wanted her to do it and snap him out of his pre-RJ days. Where would his life have ended up at if she didn't force him to remember the truth about his past? It was clear in the episode that deep down he did know that something horrible had happened to him, but was blocking it out with women and money. If she didn't tell him the truth, it would have come back eventually and it was better that he remembered it with her there with him then somewhere else with no one by his side. And, like Cho said, the deaths of his family sadly did change Jane for the better. :( When he was in his pre-RJ days version, he was taking advantage of people left and right and conning everyone for his own personal gain. He wasn't that good of a person morally speaking and it wasn't going to end well for him. Only after did RJ happen that Jane pulled his act together and actually evolved as a person, giving up using his mentalist skills for himself and opting instead to use them for the good of people who needed them more than he did. So I believe Lisbon did what was necessary for Jane to get his act back together and remember why he decided to use his mentalist skills for true value in the world. The truth hurts, but is sometimes necessary to know. :(

Actually this version of Jane is who he would have become if he'd never met Angela and they never had Charlotte. Jane has said very clearly on multiple occasions that Angela and Charlotte were a good influence on him. Pre-Red john Jane with Angela and Charlotte was different from the man we saw in this episode.

And as a cop, she couldn't let Jane, the man she spent so many years with, building his new life from a terrible past walk away just because he didnt want tl remember his past. But if you forget you wipe them out and by that; dishonoring them. And what if you became a thief, a con man, and became a disgrace to everything you was and had? Fascinating scene, in a psychological way. After another Post traumatic event, when this time he faced death, he goes to what we called in Clinical psychology Dissociated fugue. This event was so distressful for him, that all his fear and pain he has inside him due the way he lost his family, made his mind find a way to escape his emotions. The way Lisbon bring him to his reality is to force him to confront his pain. Sometimes is the only way for help a person to recover his way back, but can backfire because triggered the most painful emotions that the person is trying to escape from and can take him to a deep depression. Jane is a fascinating character, he is smart, manipulate, bold, with sociopath traits, with the ability to read the behaviour of people, understand the patterns of how human beings do things in their environment. I see him as person who had to deal with the pain of been used instead of Love by his dad for his capacities to feel and read people. We didn't have the chance to see more of his early age relationship with his family. But the little we saw, he seems to be a good heart boy, but raised up to be a conned. That was he dark side, but deep inside he did care for others, but he got conflicted between what he was taught how to deal with emotions in other to survive the world, and how did he really felt. His family were the one who gave him some peace. When he lost that part, he was force to deal with his emotions, loosing his mind. And to survive again he needs a purpose, revenge is a way that he can control de pain, the lost of peace, he had with his family. The persona he developed after the death of his family, is also a conman but this time his purpose is different, to find the person who took away the only people who gave him the peace and love that he couldn't find anyway else. Lisbon is now the only person who he can find that part of peace he had with his family. Lisbon is the connection of his positive side. Red John knows that, & he torture Janes, by let him know, he can take away his peace. Torturing Jane emotionally, is a way to made Jane to embrace his dark side & never have peace.

I don't think Lisbon was being selfish. She was not doing it for herself it was always for him. He might've been happy for a little while but he would've remembered. Would he forgive her for not telling the truth? Would he be worse off than he was before he lost his memory? Letting him live a lie would not have accomplished anything, it took all of her strength to even take him there in the first place. It was obvious that she struggled with making him relive his past, but it was for the best.

The incredible thing here is how Lisbon detects that Jane was beginning to remember something and that he himself was feeling it and that's why he acted like that, escaping. She knew that she had to do something for him, that she had to save him again, making him face the truth and the pain, even if it meant a heartbreaking act for both of them. You can't live in a lie.. nothing good would come of it. Just seeing how Jane is about to fall to the floor when she realizes everything when she opens the door is... terribly sad. But this time he wouldn't be alone, she would be there, by he side... 🥺💖💔😭

Even though it might seem like Lisbon was being cruel or selfish, I think she knows Jane well enough to know what he’d want. I would guess that it would be more devastating for him to realize he’d forgotten his wife and daughter even existed than for him to remember what happened. He wouldn’t trade their memory for the “happiness” he found, which is another part of this-I think even he could tell that he wasn’t happy. Like Lisbon said, he was starting to feel again and didn’t know what to do. I think even when he said he was happy in the hospital, there was an emptiness in him that he was able to deny less and less as the episode progressed.

Right after the episode, I totally agreed with all saying Lisbon was cruel, and I was sure that he'd be angry with her for making him remember. However, after a few days of pondering, I believe that Jane would (or will) be thankful. Nothing matters more to the man than the demise of RJ. Sure, he might have been superficially happy, but I think this scene was beautiful and sweet, because it was seemed like Lisbon was actually REALLY trying to help him in his quest more than necessary, and normal.

It was less about gratitude and bringing back the past and making him "better" again as it was about his safety. Lisbon noticed that Jane was starting to "feel things inside", meaning that the memories were coming back. If left alone he WOULD have remembered, possibly by the end of the week. Either she could try to spark his memory, when he's with her, safe, before he's cut ties...or she let's him go and he remembers what happened, all alone, after sleeping with who knows how many women, making who knows how many more enemies, and breaking who knows how many laws. He'd have no support system, possibly break down again.

Lisbon might have done cruel thing by letting him relive the moment, but he would wake up at some point (week or months is uncertain, but it's not like he lost parr of his brain). And yes, as he did break the law unnecessarily (when he eventually wakes up, he won't mind breaking the law for catching RJ, but he would be angry at Lisbon is he broke the law for assaulting women or destryoed properties.). So saving him from breaking the law or messing up his life (to which he would return to his CBI self little while later) would be the right path to take.

No I would not. Being lied to, and especially something this big, I think, is one of the biggest forms of betrayal, and I would rather be told the the sad truth, than live a lie. Even though he wouldn't have known, eventually he would have found out and he would probably hate Lisbon for it. This is one episode that could have done better as two-parter instead of ending it as abruptly as it did. The build up was amazing and the climax could have been the House scene while the next part could have focused on Lisbon's actions, implications as well as introspection from the both of them. that would have been amazing.

We only can assume things according what we know before this episode. Jane was raised by his father who was a con artist, he always has the ability to read people, but his father exploited those abilities for conned people. In one of the episodes, shows Jane's younger, he didn't want to coin a grandmother with a sick girl, but his dad force him to do it. So is grow up to be a con artist. He did the psych reading as a con artist for living. He also grow up to be arrogant. Is not clear at this moment that he was a Playboy. But he did love his wife very much as well his daughter. Later series he talking to Lisbon and told her that his wife and him wanted to escape from the circle they were grow up because they have to be con and if they weren't a con they were mark (mean that they have to let be conned). So they escape that life, implying they were uncomfortable coning people. But because Jane was so arrogant, he never think in consequences. His behavior to show how smart he was, cost his wife & daughter their life. After RJ killed his wife & daughter, he changed his way about conning people. He always has had a darker side, but his wife knew that and Love him anyway. I my opinion his wedding ring that he always refused to take off, symbolise the guilt he carried for let his actions take away what really matters for him.

Well, we don't know whether or not he would hate Lisbon for not telling him the truth, I agree with that. And I beg to differ about your last statement, obviously Jane in fugue was very happy, did you ever see him like that in his normal state? Quoting Batman, sometimes the truth isn't good enough. Sometimes, people deserve to have their faith rewarded. Even in a lie you can feel safe and loved. Why would u want to suffer in truth if you can rejoice in dream, anyway?

Go to Google write in : project free TV the mentalist and Write In The Season you want to watch. click on the above link and then choose your episode. you will find a large number of options how to watch the episode I usually choose VIDBULL after you have pressed on VIDBULL, at the bottom of the screen in blue there stands: CONTINUE TO VIDEO in blue. click on that. Remove all adds from video and double click on the video to let it download... this works with all series. Again this is how I do it so cool. u can also download movies...;D

I don't like that Jane doesn't show any emotion other than sadly staring down when his memories return. Suddenly realising that you had a wife and child, remembering their faces and the times you shared with them, and then also remembering them lying dead on the floor, should make you start weeping inconsolably immediately. It would be like reliving their deaths all over again. His reaction is tame compared to what it realistically would have been, even for a guy as cold and rational as Jane.

He was clearly in shock and you can see how he is about to collapse... 😒😞 the impact of pain does not necessarily mean screaming and crying... emotions work differently in each person, many cannot even express a word, and that It doesn't mean that they are not feeling it. In fact, silence is the most heartbreaking way to experience a duel. The scene says a lot and makes the viewer understand what obviously happened... Jane evidently broke down and Lisbon was there to support him... only she could see that pain in him💔

@xDamons Live a lie...but showered with joy and laughter. So what if it's a lie? It's still happiness. And it's not like he remembered with someone else in the ending scene. He still remembered alone, just because Lisbon said sorry doesn't mean they remembered together. Besides, it's not Lisbon's right to decide why Jane has to forget. Painful memories are cancerous, it's better to forget than to remember and live through it every single time.

@TranslucentBubble Picture it this way, although I know being the series they are they cannot drag this out, but letting him live in that state would make him happy, as opposed to stopping him and his joy altogether. What is the use of being safe...if you have to suffer for a very very long time? Would u rather not forget and be happy even in a lie?

@xDamons Yeah, I agree the best healing we all can get is not forgetting, but accepting. But man, is accepting extremely difficult. It's like building titanic. I guess Lisbon has her own reason to did what she did and although the writers of Mentalist have the tendency to just forget this kind of thing, I wish Jane would ask her why. He's got the right. She's been preaching for him to move on and once he did in a way, she pulled him back. There must be a reason and I wanna know it.
