It had a lot to do with the real-life (unconsummated) romance between the leads. All the showrunner had in mind was a revenge tale culminating in a final showdown in the last episode. Even after s3 the writers refused to accept Jisbon was happening. But the relationship developed on and off screen to the point they couldn't deny it anymore.

@@smurfyday that's not true: there is clear and confirmed intention of a romance setup to run parallel to the revenge; the refusal to confirm that romance was intentional until it was canon is absolutely standard protocol for every show like this, of which there are many. The actors and the writers can be found admitting the love was there intentionally from the start, including Baker. Set up the possibility, let it slow burn, maintain plausible deniability, and if the chips fall correctly you can initiate a canonical romance--I can give you dozens upon dozens of examples. Implying that Baker and Tunney were itching to screw the whole length of the show and somehow that won over the writers to create a love story last minute is ridiculous and disgusting. Tunney spent time with Baker's wife and children: his family visited the set and even starred in episodes--she speaks of them all with love and kindness. Imagine your own father and his colleague and friend's wonderful work on a beautiful story being a stranger's fodder for bemoaning the fact that he didn't cheat on your mother with her. Sick!

Cho's unanswered question about how Jane got a change of clothes is just a throwaway line, but it makes one wonder. After Jane killed RJ and made it all the way to Venezuela, it occurred to me that he may have had spare clothing, money, and supplies in hidden emergency locations. A nomadic upbringing and hardwired habits of sleight of hand would make squirrelling away cash fit his character. It would also attest to the fact that he never intended/expected to die in his pursuit of Red John. Just a theory.

So confusing, if Jane really in love with Lisbon, why he asked Kristina Frye for a drink in Season 2 x22 then dated at 2 x23??? If Lisbon really in love with Jane, she won't tell Kristina Frye Jane was in the motel looking for the "real Carman" in Season 2 x22 to make a chance for them to get alone with each other, so I think they still not in love with each other, but had some special feeling until Season 4, Jane really got a huge trouble of killed the fake RJ - Timothy Carter & went to jail, the worried from Lisbon really shown she cares so much about Jane & in love with him, and Jane, after he worked with Erica Flynn, he turely can feels Lisbon's jealous, he seems like start in love with Lisbon & care more Lisbon's feeling until Lorelei shows up in Season 5......

their relationship grew with time, it's like Lisbon said in the last season she couldn't admit even to herself that her feelings for him changed. And her sleeping with Walter and Jane going out with someone he thought interesting do not mean they didn't love each other already but they couldn't deal with that, even more Patrick he was trapped in his past and he was afraid of Red John he would never risk being with someone till kill him. Patrick with Erica was also very superficial, he thought her interesting, Lorelei was just a mean to an end and he ended sympathizing with her story cause Red John made her in a way. When he said I love toher and pretended not toremember was a vent, he was sorry for leaving and worrying her, missed her, and was terrified that RJ asked for her death. He almost said something when she was trapped to the bomb also, when he was poisoned with the tea his allucinations were his own thoughts, he did think about Teresa as a woman not just a work friend, with time his dependency, trust and admiration to her became loveand vice versa, her goodness, kindness and honest saved him. This is one of the best couple on tv ever, the writers did a grea tjob just teasing and keeping all so with so much realism.
