Ready for your next Doctor Who cosplay? Here's a quick tutorial showing how to convert my steampunk gas mask into a Doctor Who The Empty Child style. I think these would be great for group Halloween costumes because they are cheap, quick, and pretty easy to make yourself from EVA foam sheets.

OOOOooooh! I might use your DIY to make a Pyro mask. I can't find a good one online that doesn't have bad reviews or is too costly. The best one online has triangle eyes, and Pyro's mask has round opticals. I"m so stoked I"m gonna go ahead and subscribe cause it looks like you have lots of cool plans and ideas.

Sweet! I just updated the pattern a tiny bit, (I forgot the little triangle pieces) so make sure you use the newer version if you are making the Empty Child one.

The canister that I think you are talking about is a filter which filters the air from things a human can’t breathe, the filter could be attached from the gas mask to a hose then to the filter like the gp-4 but the gp-5 has the filter attached to the mask itself, you have to be careful with some old filters because they might contain asbestos and is deadly to breathe in.

Apt name. The triangular bit is a design borrowed from a real mask, the English Civil Duty Respirator, which was meant to hold the exhale valve. This specific type of exhale valve is called a flapper valve, and was present on most respirators between the early 1900's to the early 1940's.

You mention Mod Podge Melts in your supply list, but the glue coming out of your hot glue gun looked black. Are you using a black hot glue stick?

Probably. I've seen colored hot glue sticks bevore.

Yep, I am using black glue sticks in this one- I just wanted to try them out to see how they compare to the normal ones I use. They seemed a little softer and not as strong, so I wouldn't recommend them unless it is important that your glue is black.

I haven't had that problem at all, It might depend though on what brand hot glue you use. The only thing to really watch is that you don't leave it in a really hot car and have the glue melt:)

How small a head? The pattern has three sizes which would cover most adult heads, and the small fits my 10 year old son. I do have the pattern I used for my 3 year old daughter which I could make available if you wanted it.

You can Spray paint this type of foam, but I hardly ever do it- spray paint usually dries pretty brittle, and cracks easily.
