Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. The business was started as a tribute to Mrs. Soap & Clay's grandmother, the OG maker in the family that cultivated everyone's love for the DIY life. The studio/retail shop opened in 2017 on 6th Ave in Tacoma, and immediately began teaching soap, bath bomb, lotion, and scrub classes to the makers and maker enthusiasts of the PNW. In 2019, the pottery studio opened as well, making the soap shop a busy place full of artistic energy every minute of the day.
Mrs. Soap & Clay has been featured on Business Spotlight, New Day Northwest, and was awarded a coveted place on the South Sound's 40 under 40 list in 2019, an award given to the most influential business people under the age of 40 each year. She cried when she walked up to the podium to accept the award. A lot.
Drawing from her chemistry background and her maker spirit, Mrs. Soap & Clay infuses her favorite things into her soapy designs and creates products that are fun to see, use, and learn to make. Stick around for this ride - she'll take you on a great one.

I discovered lotion bars at a craft fair. I bought 2. Love them, but live in a hot climate and they stick to the bottom of the tin, so they've become more of a salve after a few uses. So I researched butters to try my own hand at improving on the idea. I bought Kokum and beeswax and I have assorted carrier and assorted oils already. I bought tins and want to work on them this weekend. This was a useful video and I really appreciate you using "parts" it is easier to follow. I wish I had someone experienced looking over my shoulder who could say, "oh no Honey, that's not going to work.". But I feel more confident watching this.

Solid lotion bar: 6 parts medium butter, 4 parts wax, 2 parts hard butter, 10 parts oils. Then add: arrowroot or other starch + fragrance. Is this corect? Did I miss something?

I do not like the waxy feel of wax. I am using a recipe simpler than yours (equal parts wax, cocoa butter, and liquid oil), but decided to substitute the wax for cetearyl alcohol and it worked. It was a different texture but I liked it. I bet stearic acid like you mentioned would also work. :)
@MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay Жыл бұрын
Totally! So cetearyl alcohol is the main ingredient of an emulsifying wax, and while it’s overkill in a recipe for a lotion bar which requires no assistance staying in solution, it will act as a (more expensive) hardening agent for the bar. Stearic would be a viable option as well, though I fear it would feel more waxy than a soy or beeswax.

Question: you mentioned that soy wax is too soft to stand among the other waxes in lotion bars, but can you use soy wax as a stand-in for the hard (cocoa) butter portion? Btw, thank you for these videos. I'm learning so much and I'm really enjoying the science behind it.
@MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay Жыл бұрын
Yeah, soy has a lower melt point than bees and is softer, similar to the consistency of cocoa. So it works there, but another wax with a higher melt point is a good idea for structure.

You said arrowroot was necessary to avoid greasy feel on the skin. Can I substitute colloidal oatmeal for the same effect?
@MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay Жыл бұрын
I’ve never tried it, but theoretically it could work. It would be a heavier powder though, and might end up feeling gummy on the skin. Melt down a single lotion bar and add some in at 1% of the total weight to see how you like it!

I need advice. I ordered a lotion bar from an eBay seller. It smells good. It shipped solid, no melting. So, I was pleased. However, it is so hard that it does not melt in hand. I held it and rubbed it for a while. No melting at all. I wondered if I could remelt this bar and add some coconut oil. It’s a round bar, maybe 2oz.

@@MrsSoapAndClay if it’s a two ounce round bar, about how much coconut oil should I add? I have never made lotion or soap before. This bar seems quite hard. Like a solid block of bees wax. Her listing didn’t say what’s in it.

Personally I wouldn’t use olive oil in a lotion bar because it’s a rather slimy oil, but if that’s what you have, try pairing it with a dry oil like jojoba or the like to cut down the stickiness. Have fun!
