Cutting off the scene with the final confrontation between Gandalf and Saruman (and Saruman's death!) in the version of the movie shown in theaters, to me has always seemed an absurd thing. Nonsense! Saruman was one of the main adversaries and, even though the movie was already very long, this was not a part that was redundant. It was very important, to show how he ended. It would not have been a problem, to have 10 minutes more in movie, I think... Great movies, anyway, all the first three! Surely! Greetings from Italy!

Honestly the wind really added to the effect of him standing atop the tower. I always thought that was a bit of dramatic over exaggeration though, to act as though they'd be able to hear each other from so far away. In the books he speaks from a window. It makes him seem a lot more cowardly than this scene portrays.

From what I read they did have "hero" staffs for both wizards, that means the most detailed realistic props but were only used for closeups. So he's probably using a stand-in that would be digitally altered in post production.
