Gilraen was a very special woman; her parents, father Dirhael and mother Ivorwen, were both seers with the gift of foresight, quite like Elrond himself; she possessed the gift to a much lesser degree but knew her son would be the Heir of Isildur and the last hope for Men. Lightning Snow Originally, he was supposed to have this showdown with a restored Sauron at the Battle of the Black Gates. It was then replaced with a troll when Jackson realizes that this battle wasn’t about Aragorn defeating the Dark Lord, but simply a diversion to aid Frodo in destroying the One Ring. If you go by Tolkien’s writing, Sam, the only ring bearer unaffected by the Ring’s power, is the true protagonist of the story. Still, you’re right in saying he undergoes the most develop in the trilogy. From a ranger to a protector, to a captain, to a king.

I agree as well, we see Frodo’s development in the story in overcoming his doubts to destroy the evil of The Ring (with help from Sam and, unintentionally at the end, Gollum), but Aragorn has a great character arc as well overcoming his doubts about the race of men to restore the Kingdom of Gondor as King.

Watching this, I feel as though Jackson made Aragorn a more emphasized character than he already was in the books. Sure, Aragorn left Rivendell on the quest with a determination to finally (after years of suffering hardship and a general internal struggle to become a man he could live with being) reclaim his birthright as a king, Jackson directed Viggo in such a way that I feel it's broadened my view of Aragorn. The poor guy had a shitty life; father dead, mother slowly going mad with grief and a strange obsession with the Throne of Gondor, finally learning his heritage (with all the tainted Isildur history going with it). He then spent from age twenty to age forty-nine wandering Arda, helping others, learning, taking charge of the Dunedain, and basically trying to be someone other than just a man with the bloodline of a Gondorian King. If that much happened, well... I don't think I'd be extremely cheerful or open to claiming something like that. I feel like Jackson made Tolkien's epic more realistic.

I know some people complain that Aragorn in the film is too far a departure from the confident, self-assured Aragorn of the books, who knows from the start that his destiny is to take up the kingship of Gondor. Personally, though, I find Viggo's portrayal, and Jackson & co's writing, to make for a much more interesting character. Aragorn's inner conflict, his doubts and demons, and the weight of his lineage and history, channeled through Viggo's expressive acting, add up to one of the best characters of the trilogy-and make his eventual triumph far more uplifting.

@@lukew6725 I don't think its right to call the original presentation of Aragorn flawed. It's obviously meant to hearken to Alfred's exile and miraculous reclamation of Wessex from the Heathens and perhaps the consolidation of England that stemmed from it. Two kings in exile fighting impossible odds to reclaim their birthright and save their people from thralldom. I think at the end of the day it's just a change made to suit a mass palate over the artistic vision of the author, which, I feel is nothing deserving celebration.

It's so underrated and not talked about enough that- THATS HIS MOTHERS GRAVE AND ELROND KNEW TO FIND HIM THERE. Can you imagine now often he must have sat there? Considering that J.R.R. Tolkien was a Christian theologian and close friends with C. S. Lewis and other Christian philosophers and theologians, it is actually Tolkien who wove biblical truths throughout the entire LOTR epic. The story is laden with truth, quite intentionally, to help people see glimpses into the very nature of God...as well as glimpses into the nature of sin (represented by the ring) and the Adversary, Satan (represented by Sauron). I can't speak on behalf of Peter Jackson regarding his intentions, but Tolkien's intentions are undeniable.

Knowing full well why Gondor has a Stewert and not a King on the throne, I completly understand and do not blame him for not wanting to rule Gondor, dispite doing a great job at being the Dundadian Chieften. And give what some if his ancestors, like the Black Numenorinan chick, did to sent Gondor into a coup...Aragon's disintrest as being king and Boramir's scorn at the idea of a king of Gondor are entirly justifed.

To be honest, been rereading the books now, Aragorn is nothing but proud and determined to take his throne in the books. He is a bit cocky even. They wanted him to be more humane I imagine, because Mortensen's Aragorn is just too sympathetic, kinder and nobler than the one in the book who can be commanding, sarcastic and sometime sharp tongued.

They did well to cut this scene. Films can take a certain license to deviate from a book, but this goes way too far. Aragorn didn't want power for the sake of power, true. However, he understood that by claiming his birthright as Isildur's heir he could do his part in defeating Sauron and repair the fault of his forefather. That was his duty as Isildur's heir and he never doubted his birthright.

I agree, so many people say that it was one of Jackson's best changes and criticize tolkien's writing, yet completely fail to grasp Aragorn's literary character. He is quite literally a born king of greater blood than lesser men, guided by an Angel to take his rightful throne and destroy a pretender. And people still don't see the very heavy monarchistic views inherent to that story.

One of the biggest character travesties. He always knew he would be king and accepted it. His only reservation was it was after the war was won. He feared dividing Gondor with civil war if he tried to take the kingdom from Denethor and wanted the people united and focused.

Travesty? Good grief! On the contrary, this scene, and his overall portrayal in the films is FAR, FAR better than in the books. A true arc, the reluctant King, a good and humble man. He is what we would all aspire to become. And of course Viggo was incredible at conveying that.

Fantasy movies in the past like Neverending Story were otherworldly and lack genuineness. In LotR, Peter Jackson purposely made it being historical so that audience would feel that the story took place like 7,000 years ago on planet Earth. As a result, audience find the characters relatable and hence empathize them. We feel what they feel. That's one of the factors make LotR above the other Fantasy movies. Thank you Peter Jackson and Tolkien.
