That's true if you saw it at the time. This scene pioneered lots of stuff that's so common now it doesn't register as anything out of the ordinary. The digital double of Legolas, the fluid animation of the troll, the handheld camera integrated with CGI. More than anything, the staging Peter used was ingenious - the culmination of years of experience in low budget cinema. This scene earned the price of admission on its own.

They’re goblins not orcs
@umbrellashotgunman3 жыл бұрын
@@kjdempsey Technically, they’re the same thing; Tolkien explicitly states in the foreword to the Hobbit that “orc” is basically just a Sindarin loanword that literally means “goblin” in English, and the books actually uses the two words interchangeably; the buggers squatting in Moria are generally referred to as “orcs” in the Fellowship book, while the Uruk-hai are actually occasionally referred to as “goblins”. The reason why fans tend to use “Goblin” to mean “mountain/cave orc” is because the Hobbit book, which features said mountain/cave orcs, favors the g-word over “orc”.

Nah, Gimli in the movies was both awesome and funny. Dwarves as a fantasy race tend to be objects of humor in most depictions. In Gimli's case, it was done, in my opinion, tastefully and appropriate for the setting and atmosphere the movie set and he still retained his toughness and reliability as a warrior and character. In short, I feel as if Tolkien's version of Gimli was simply added upon here, without overdoing it.
@brooksboy783 жыл бұрын
@@BFCrusader This is a misunderstanding of the tropes Tolkien was drawing on. Gimli very much feels like Dwarves out of Norse mythology, which is a very sophisticated portrayal. "Fantasy Dwarves" were not a thing Tolkien was drawing on, he was instead inspired by ancient legends and myths. The movies have none of that sophistication and replace it entirely with jokes. It was a choice made for modern Hollywood expectations rather than anything Tolkien himself would have chosen.

Yes, we've got stuff like the dwarf women scene, and the Battle Banter with Legolas during Helm's Deep, but scenes like those are him keeping his or others' hopes up during a bad situation. Why do you treat like it’s some competition for superiority? It doesn’t to have be. Fiction isn’t about one outdoing the other.
@anna-mariamarkova9584 Жыл бұрын
@@arcticangel1628 Because LOTR is superior for many reasons that people can discuss, but there is one thing that the majority of us agree on - its superb casting. The actors make you believe you are there with them, all the time. You feel it. You sense it. You experience their emotions and you connect with them. For comparison, " Rings of power" proved to the world that in order to create a masterpiece that is in a league on its own you can't simply do it with a limitless budget and CGI. Peter Jackson created something extraordinary that even 20 years later you can watch and relive, you can relate to in a magical way and feel part of.... and this is what genius is.

Boromir - One of the greatest warriors to have been produced by Gondor. Legolas - a prince, son of a well known Elvish King. And one of their best fighters and expert marksman. Gimli - hardcore brawler and the only dwarf to go into the undying lands. The Hobbits - Resilient and hardy people. Gandalf - One of the biggest baddest wizards of all time. Over the years, I've come to find myself relating more and more to Boromir. He's not nobility, not a Elvish prince or a lost king, just the son of what is essentially Gondor's middle-management structures. He has no supernatural abilities to draw on. He's lived every day in the shadow of evil, and his life is one long headache. He knows the end is on the horizon, and even though he's convinced of the hopelessness of the struggle, he goes along with it. Thrown in with a group of strangers he's charged with the protection of what are essentially four children, and he does his best to protect them (with a few key failings). He's the first to take action in this scene, to make a move to shut the doors, and he's greeted with two arrows near the face (foreshadowing his death). With climate catastrophe looming, billionaires controlling world economies, and the rise of modern dictatorships, I really resonate with the exhaustion, the irony, and the sense that, yes, shit will always get worse, but, oh well, draw swords in that line "they have a cave troll."

One thing I've come to love about this fight? The idea that, should that Troll land a solid hit, that guy is done for. Balin's coffin gets smashed, a stone bridge gets shattered, two orcs get splattered like flies by accident, Boromir gets tossed across the room and winded for a full minute, Aragorn gets hit by a glancing blow and is knocked out... There is just an ever-present sense of danger the longer that troll is alive and swinging. Rings of Power's troll battle can frankly be tossed in the garbage for being the LITERAL opposite of this scene.

I love how everyone works together to beat the troll, the strongest characters all struggle and the weaker characters get some good shots in and the heroes all care about and protect each other. Just makes the RoP scene with galadriel one shotting that snow troll seem so much more badass because shes the only one who does any damage, and she clearly doesn't respect or care about anyone else in the fight. Don't you just love characters who have no concern for their comrades, talk down to everyone and can effortlessly defeat any enemy? Way to go amazon for giving us the best TV series of all time! And keep deleting the negative reviews because people who dislike the show even if they have good reasons to deserve to be silenced.

What makes this scene work is the subversion of tension. At first. You see the skeleton fall and the noise echo. No music. No other dialogue. Just the expressions of our characters and a quick shot around Moria. We have a chance to breathe with our Fellowship, Gandalf dresses down the idiot and we get ready to move on. Then the drums. One at first. Then another. And another in succession. A shadow stirs in the deep, and the light grows brighter . . .
