That's true if you saw it at the time. This scene pioneered lots of stuff that's so common now it doesn't register as anything out of the ordinary. The digital double of Legolas, the fluid animation of the troll, the handheld camera integrated with CGI. More than anything, the staging Peter used was ingenious - the culmination of years of experience in low budget cinema. This scene earned the price of admission on its own.

I remember seeing the first part of the trilogy and thinking, wow, if this spectacular action scene was just the battle of Moria, which had been basically a skirmish in the book compared to Helm's Deep or Minas-Tirith siege, what would those be like. And indeed they delivered.

The sound design in these films is incredible. There is music permeating throughout, but when brutality comes into play (this fight, certain scenes in helms deep, the mumakil charge, etc) the music cuts out. @@kjdempsey Technically, they’re the same thing; Tolkien explicitly states in the foreword to the Hobbit that “orc” is basically just a Sindarin loanword that literally means “goblin” in English, and the books actually uses the two words interchangeably; the buggers squatting in Moria are generally referred to as “orcs” in the Fellowship book, while the Uruk-hai are actually occasionally referred to as “goblins”. The reason why fans tend to use “Goblin” to mean “mountain/cave orc” is because the Hobbit book, which features said mountain/cave orcs, favors the g-word over “orc”.

One thing I've come to love about this fight? The idea that, should that Troll land a solid hit, that guy is done for. Balin's coffin gets smashed, a stone bridge gets shattered, two orcs get splattered like flies by accident, Boromir gets tossed across the room and winded for a full minute, Aragorn gets hit by a glancing blow and is knocked out... There is just an ever-present sense of danger the longer that troll is alive and swinging. Rings of Power's troll battle can frankly be tossed in the garbage for being the LITERAL opposite of this scene.

Over the years, I've come to find myself relating more and more to Boromir. He's not nobility, not a Elvish prince or a lost king, just the son of what is essentially Gondor's middle-management structures. He has no supernatural abilities to draw on. He's lived every day in the shadow of evil, and his life is one long headache. He knows the end is on the horizon, and even though he's convinced of the hopelessness of the struggle, he goes along with it. Thrown in with a group of strangers he's charged with the protection of what are essentially four children, and he does his best to protect them (with a few key failings). He's the first to take action in this scene, to make a move to shut the doors, and he's greeted with two arrows near the face (foreshadowing his death). With climate catastrophe looming, billionaires controlling world economies, and the rise of modern dictatorships, I really resonate with the exhaustion, the irony, and the sense that, yes, shit will always get worse, but, oh well, draw swords in that line "they have a cave troll."

Agreed. It's why he and Sam are such beloved characters, they're the 'everyman' of the films, rather than the supernatural or prophetic others. IMO people who you can personally relate to are better characters, you can relate to them more easily. And this is coming from an Aragorn fan.

He has a much better anchor point, his right elbow moves back and slightly around his head on release, a sign of the stronger back muscles working and a simple (yet hard to do) relaxing of the fingers. Orlando definitely had a bit of training to look like he was an experienced archer. What makes this scene work is the subversion of tension. At first. You see the skeleton fall and the noise echo. No music. No other dialogue. Just the expressions of our characters and a quick shot around Moria. We have a chance to breathe with our Fellowship, Gandalf dresses down the idiot and we get ready to move on. Then the drums. One at first. Then another. And another in succession. A shadow stirs in the deep, and the light grows brighter . . .

The main thing i love here is how much teamwork is going on in the fellowship. Aragorn and Boromir stopping the cave troll standing on sam, Aragorn saving Boromir and at 3:46 Legolas shooting the troll in the shoulder, saving Gimli. Those are just a few examples, but probably my favourites. There's this constant notion in the fight that no one in the fellowship would survive very long without the cooperation of the others. Fantastic pacing and direction here.

Fun fact, the opening shot of the Mines of Moria we see from the beginning of the video to 18 seconds is actually a practical effect with the actors edited in. Nah, Gimli in the movies was both awesome and funny. Dwarves as a fantasy race tend to be objects of humor in most depictions. In Gimli's case, it was done, in my opinion, tastefully and appropriate for the setting and atmosphere the movie set and he still retained his toughness and reliability as a warrior and character. In short, I feel as if Tolkien's version of Gimli was simply added upon here, without overdoing it.
@brooksboy78
@brooksboy78 3 жыл бұрын
@@BFCrusader This is a misunderstanding of the tropes Tolkien was drawing on. Gimli very much feels like Dwarves out of Norse mythology, which is a very sophisticated portrayal. "Fantasy Dwarves" were not a thing Tolkien was drawing on, he was instead inspired by ancient legends and myths. The movies have none of that sophistication and replace it entirely with jokes. It was a choice made for modern Hollywood expectations rather than anything Tolkien himself would have chosen.

Yes, we've got stuff like the dwarf women scene, and the Battle Banter with Legolas during Helm's Deep, but scenes like those are him keeping his or others' hopes up during a bad situation. I remember that the prologue battle with Sauron and this moment in Moria blew my mind. Goosebumps, Awe. The score as the camera pans on the Halls, it's just incredible. What a movie.

Part of what makes this fight sequence so absolutely fantastic and visceral is that following the tense build-up, once the Orcs break through the door, there's NO MUSIC at all until about 3/4 of the way through it. Even then, the score doesn't overpower or unnecessarily dramatize the action. And until the music sets back in (around 4:22), it's just hand-to-hand combat. Really just one of so many staggeringly good scenes in this trilogy that stand up just as wonderfully now as they did two decades ago.

Such a great scene - and it's the only time in the entire trilogy we get to see the entire Fellowship fighting as The Fellowship.

Love how the music turns off during the battle to add to the realism of the chaos. A Legolas always lands on its feet!

I love how everyone works together to beat the troll, the strongest characters all struggle and the weaker characters get some good shots in and the heroes all care about and protect each other. Just makes the RoP scene with galadriel one shotting that snow troll seem so much more badass because shes the only one who does any damage, and she clearly doesn't respect or care about anyone else in the fight. Don't you just love characters who have no concern for their comrades, talk down to everyone and can effortlessly defeat any enemy? Way to go amazon for giving us the best TV series of all time! And keep deleting the negative reviews because people who dislike the show even if they have good reasons to deserve to be silenced.

People cannot imagine how beautiful Moria/Dwarrowdelf was in its prime. This was the most important dwarf kingdom of middle earth, greater than the lonely mountain. In The Hobbit, they show the lonely mountian in its prime, so you can try to imagine that x3 for Moria

Dude, i think i miss something...when the orc's (goblins maybe, these guys in Moria are a bit diferent) took over that kingdom from the Dwarves no one help them? This is relationed with the fact Moria have a fuckin Balrog?

@@teminternetemmordor7178 The Balrog was the one that drove all the dwarves from Moria (which took around a year). It is only after Sauron heard about this that he then populated Moria with orcs to set a stronghold in the Misty Mountains and to loot anything they can find in the treasuries of the kingdom.

Yes, I didn't kill myself... Yet... Just didn't have lots of free time. And... The copy I had - is quite a shitty one! Even tho it's blue-ray, upscaling it was a real 🅱️tch. But oh well, I did what I could. I guess I shouldn't bother at all. But, whatever. Lotr will always be one of my fav movies of all time, and I really like thoose fight scenes they have. Had to delete a couple of moments, so YT could eat it and, yeah, thats about it.
