This is one of my favourite scenes in the trilogy. It’s just shot so well, the overhead shot of the Nazgûl pouring into the Prancing Pony, then the shot of the innkeeper cowering in fear as they continue to ethereally march in behind him, it all sets out exactly how we should feel about the Ringwraiths, pure DREAD.

I couldn’t disagree more. I love how you don’t know if you can trust this ‘strider’ right away, especially since there’s so much tension in the scenes before. He’s very intimidating but you soon find out he handled with good reason. And I even can excuse him being a little rough with Frodo because he endangered his and everybody else’s life in that tavern when he put on the ring, even if he didn’t mean to. Mighty warriors doesn't mean they can't be overwhelmed. Isildur's 200 Numenorean guards, all veterans of the war against Sauron and splendidly equipped, was eventually grounded down by orcs. The Nazgul as powerful as they are simply can't win if they were dogpiled by several hundred people at once. So, did the Nazgul just... leave? You'd think they'd put the entire town to the sword searching for the halflings, but apparently hiding in the house across the same street is totally enough to give them the slip. What even was that house? Just some dude's home? And he just let in a bunch of strangers who for some reason couldn't spend the night in the nearby inn?
@larry92286 жыл бұрын
Alknix in the book, it’s a different room in the inn, meant for men. Spies told the Nazgûl where they were staying, and which room. After announcing their entrance and making all the racket stabbing the beds, the Nazgûl thought the hobbits would overhear and run off. So they didn’t risk finding them, and if they did stay the entire town would have been alerted while they were still in town. Causing major havoc
@YourEmperorStef5 жыл бұрын
The Nazgul aren't very powerful. They rely on fear and swiftness, so alerting the entire town of Bree, which is quite big, would result in them likely fighting of the only four Nazgul. And then again, the spies telling them the Hobbits were in that room they destroyed and then not finding the Hobbits, but just pillows, just made them think the Hobbits knew of the assault and probably left. So why turn the entire town upside down when you can clearly see you got tricked and whoever's you're chasing probably ran away, so why not try and chase them?

"The closer we are to danger, the farther we are from harm, it's the last thing he'll expect"

Because the nazgul where ordered by sauron to find the one ring and they focused only upon this task. When Frodo put on the one ring in the inn they became aware of his general location but not his immediate vicinity. Saurons spies told them which room the hobbits where in but unkownst to them, Aragorn had switched them to his room. When they found nothing but decoys they guessed that the hobbits had learned of their approach and fled and rather than putting the whole town to the sword looking for them they instead scoured the countryside since they where supposed to be somewhat discreet about the matter nor wanting to risk the hobbits slipping away during the chaos such an action would likely cause. They do not require food or sleep but the hobbits do. A fact the nazgul where well aware of. So they simply pulled back and waited, watching from afar until tracking their quarry to Amon zul. A place where Frodo would surely have met his end if not for Aragorn's timely rescue.

I love this scene but I feel like the book makes the creep factor go up way more. In the original scenario, they all hid in the room together that night but the key difference was that nobody heard the wraiths even do anything. They woke up the next day and their room was torn to pieces, yet not even the innkeeper heard a sound despite not being able to sleep. That’s way more terrifying than this imo. Knowing something is coming for you, and can sneak up without you even noticing it’s there. They’re way more sneaky in the novel.

The same scene with the nazgul stabbing the beds but in the animated version of the movie still haunts me to this day, I think it was scarier than even this 😱

This is my favourite part of the film honestly and kind of creepy !

As much as I love this scene, it has one major flaw: the Nazgul are fooled by the pillows/Hobbits trick while at the same time Aragorn is giving exposition on them, specifying that at all times they feel the presence of the ring.

Jackson didn't care about the books frankly

The ring must worn, for it to be felt by the Ring Wraiths or draw the attention of the eye of Sauron. If it isn't worn, neither Sauron nor the Ring Wraiths can feel the presence of it.

They knew it was close; it *was* close, it was just across the road. The Nazgul seem to need to spend time figuring it out where it is exactly. Think of the Nazgul sniffing over the Hobbits as they hid on the side of the road; the Nazgul knew it was somewhere close, but it couldn't quite figure out where. They were on a quick raid into Bree, a smash and grab, they didn't have the time to sniff about and figure out where it was - presumably once they realised they'd been tricked in the Prancing Pony, they knew they'd lost their stealth advantage and had to book before the whole town raised against them. They went back to watching the roads instead.

The Nazgûl in the books were described to be drawn to dark rooms where their shadows can sneak. Aragorn had a fire and light going on so they were not keen to where he was. Their senses also were different whether it was bright, dark, or if the ring was recently worn.

The Nazgul at the beginning was likely Khamul as he was the most sensitive to the ring, according to Unfinished Tales.

The Nazgul are terrifying for the same reason the T-1000 in Terminator 2 was terrifying. It's just this really powerful thing that's focused entirely on killing you and you can't reason with it or even talk to it.

Or technically even kill it, it'll just come back. Once you've earned one's ire your stuck dealing with it for the rest of your existence, maybe even beyond.
