Side note: I recently revisited the original Alien in preparation for this, and I was reminded how well the film has aged. Despite being from an earlier time and maybe feeling “old” to a guy born in 2001, the production design, atmosphere, performances, and especially the directing and editing are all still as evocative as the first time I saw it. It's a testament to the enduring quality of the craftsmanship and vision behind a simple idea -every pipe in the wall, every droplet of sweat, every breath, all of it holds massive impact. i’d love to hear your thoughts on it in a proper review if you can make the time!

On the topic of the prequels' sleekness (or lack of scruffiness), Ridley Scott has mentioned that Prometheus looks the way it does because that mission was being funded by the wealthiest man alive, putting all of his resources into all of the top-of-the-line gear, whereas in Alien they're the bottom-class citizens flying an old, rusty truck with cheap, outdated gear. Knowing this, the production design of Romulus becomes less nostalgia-bait and more thematic. In fact, viewed through this thematic lens, the production design of all the Alien movies becomes very intentional.
@chrisho68744 ай бұрын
Also the design of the Prometheus bridge comes from the original concept art for the Nostromo bridge by Ron Cobb who did the designs for all the human aspects in the film like ship and suits while Giger did all the alien designs for the film that Ridley wanted to give a big contrast to both designs. He didn't use Rob Cobb's first design for the exact reasons explained above which in the end really worked out good and glad he came back used the original Nostromo bridge design for Prometheus.

Even Prometheus had David the android and Shaw the main character that you really remember, shit even those knucklehead science idiots who got killed by that snake thing were memorable, this aliens romulus had zero, the black android was memorable somewhat but zero personality and I don't even remember his name. Thing back to Aliens, Vasquez was a minor character with maybe 5 lines total and 30 years later anyone who ever watched the movie probably remembers her. I think that should be a question to ask right now. Where is all this going? What is the alien franchise about? What is this movie made for? Will we really continue to consume another and another Alien movie made exactly like the original? The first two films were more than just pieces of entertainment, they expanded the imagination and, for better or worse, Prometheus tries to do that too. In fact, I still think Prometheus is a great addition to the franchise, flawed but still fascinating. Too bad Scott listened to the bad reviews then and tried to please the fans with Covenant instead of perfecting his Prometheus ideas.

Both Prometheus and Covenant are legendary IMO and for the first time after 40 years it expanded the lore of aliens. It was in the comics but now they've explored the engineers the black goo and mad scientist AI but I get not everyone liked it. The alien TV show is supposed to go really deep into the alien mythology.
@curtsampson68744 ай бұрын
Your second question is very easy to answer in multiple parts. Of course, the Alien franchise has always asked one basic question, ""Are human beings actually the apex that they think they are?" The first films gave resounding answers to how humans feel when they no longer answer yes to that question. The Prometheus turn gave us another answer: We are and we shouldn't fear to explore anywhere else. Alien Romulus kind of boils some of those two together. The ability of Romulus to do that seemlessly is in young people. Young people are always invincible until adversity evitably hits. Its what Fede Alvarez has doen with almost all of his films. This movie is obviously made for the reset we are talking about. Alvarez shows how to get Alien back to its roots without doing away with any part of the franchise; a shear navigation of each and every iteration before it. Now where it should go... You can argue. Every successful older franchise does follow a similar path like she said. This will not have a direct sequel. But what it should represent it that it does tell a story that doesn't necessarily follow characters from previous movies. Hopefully the Alien TV show will also focus on Weyland Yutani a bit more like Star Wars' did with "Andor." I also still think they can play around with the concept of life itself in different ways in the universe. The key is to go all in like this movie did. Its funny, the series is built upon biomechanics being the centerpiece of a perfect organism but we've never seen a full go at that.

Yeah, my main issue with the film is that they had too many callbacks, when they had the chance to move things forward. The fact it takes place between the first two films, it literally felt like a film stuck between the two. In terms of audio and visual, the film excels in sound, music and effects (especially, practical), but the script/story suffers from rehash and mishmash of previous Alien installments. Sure, there are enough elements to the film that should satisfy the Alien fandom as a popcorn movie - particularly visually - but there are so many plot deficiencies and lazy tropes employed, that the overall takeaway for me was just ‘what was the point’ or ‘could have been so much better’. Had high hopes of Romulus, but ultimately it was just another meh addition to the franchise that probably sits somewhere around Alien 3/Resurrection. Given the high bar of the first two films, that’s probably enough to keep many people happy; I just continue to live in hope that there has to be another truly great Alien film possible that leaves you breathless.

The original Alien, the Terminator, the Predator, etc; what’s so hard to figure out? You nailed it, a malevolent, mysterious force stalking the characters with unrelenting resolve. Along the way, were treated to the gradual revelation of all their terrible abilities. At first we know nothing, then the terror and tension ramps up with each encounter. Formulaic for a reason. Now I understand why the original captivates me so much while the later entries fail to hit so deep. Add the existential dread of something from outside our normal frame of reference that we can’t fully understand in a hostile environment, and you have the real recipe for cosmic terror. It’s also why sequels(prequels) tend to fail. The fear of what we don’t know is gone. We just watch the latest characters deal with it for his/her first time without experiencing it as deeply as we did originally. For me, the best of Romulus is seeing a new phase of the Alien’s morphology. The cocoon phase fills a hole in the original creature’s development. This is amplified by the Alien dragging 2 corpses into the new hive after hunting. It’s clear the bodies aren’t being used for implantation but for something we haven’t seen before-namely nutrition. Now we can understand how they can gain size between the chestburster phase and the fully grown zeno. That part of the original film has bothered me for years.

The problem with the Alien sequels, including Aliens, is that they demystify the creature more and more. The solution would have been to make it less understandable. It’s “alien” after all. It has acid for blood! That’s impossible! It’s the personification of the Grim Reaper…. You simply can’t understand that it is death itself! Should have made it more insane… guns should have never been able to kill it! Ok, maybe slow it down a bit so you could run like hell, but basically if you encounter this creature, you are dead! The films should have been about how the help you escape death itself! … oh, you don’t!

I feel like I was watching a laurel for the series in the form of a mashup of themes from each film. From all of Aliens to, surprisingly, even Prometheus. Which can be charming. Alvarez pays homage to his predecessors, the filmmakers on whose work he grew up. Just like in Evil Dead, where he did something similar, But here the threats between these quotes and nods are terribly apparent. There's EVERYTHING here that we know from the series, at the same time there's not much new, and what's added is often... well, unfortunately, a bit silly 😅. Still, I hope it sells and Alvarez makes another film. Maybe then, after paying homage to his predecessors, he will tell something truly his own, because his technical skills and understanding of horror clearly fits here.

I somewhat sympathize with your concern about the next direction of the franchise. I think this movie did a couple of things to ensure its future however. The first being that the survivors are still in possession of the black pathogen goo. And weyland yutani knows it. They are also headed to a system that doesn’t allow weyland yutani to operate there. So there’s definitely some room to play there. Also, because this film tied into the prequels with its black goo arc, there’s also an opportunity for more origin story lore to be developed with a potential third prequel installment. Where did David go with his version of the xeno and black goo? How long has weyland known about David’s endeavors etc. plenty to play with thanks to this movie.

Some say it copied the other films. I was nicely surprised by how close it was to the other films. I liked it.

First time visitor here... just watched Red Letter Media's take on this film and essentially they said the first 30 minutes was very exciting/good. However, the remainder of the file devolved into what essentially were a stream of call-backs to the previous installments. I'll probably just buy it when it comes out on media and take a look then. Thanks for sharing!!!

Impressive review! We did see Romulus two days ago, and it is impressive. I would rate it #3 in the series behind Alien and Aliens. Great zero G sequences.

it doesn’t quite grab you , the problem with the movie is that the Ripley substitute we know is never in danger for a second?

To be fair, even with the original Alien and Aliens, there's a point where you realise Ripley is going to make it.

First time watching your content, this was a great review. Very grounded and constructive and I agree with your points. Those first 30min should be expanded upon IMO, the Wayland work class and mine work was so interesting, the setting etc I was so hooked and sad that it jumped to the mission too soon.

i haven't been so excited to go to the cinema for a movie since LOTR return of the king and more recently Rogue One. I think this movie offers the opportunity of exploring a parallel adventures series regarding the struggle to survive when dealing with an Alien. Parallel to the originals featuring Ripley and somehow in the same approximate timeline. Also, it highlights the main idea, no matter what you do don't try to mess with Alien, its just pure primal evil by its very essence and cannot be tamed or bent or augmented or whatever, just destroy it and survive. No other way. Ripley had it right from the beginning. I hope to see more of the adventures of our main characters.

I had forgotten it was filmed for IMAX. A pleasant surprise at Lincoln Square. Being in front of a screen that big makes it feek like I'm on a field trip.

I haven’t seen it yet, but I find that these movies, other than the first and second, and “Alien Resurrection,” which I found promising and forward looking; to be quite repetitive. Prometheus, was also very promising, and although it kinda devolved into another slasher near the end, there was the hope of going to the genesis of this whole alien universe. But no, more regurgitation, in fact, Covenant, was a rip off of Prometheus, promising beginning, and quick devolution into foolishness. I think Ridley has a deeper mind than this and the franchise needs to realize its potential by confronting the origin(s), rather than doing mindless repetitions or reimagining. Yup, you’re right, StarWars did that too. That’s Hollywood, if it makes a buck, until someone sticks their neck out and makes that rare break through movie, that blockbuster, they just won’t risk originality for cash! I’ll probably catch this one when it comes to TV.

As an Alien fan. Me and my son enjoyed all the Easter eggs. We would cross talk throughout the movie. That's from Aliens, that's from Alien.....the little set pieces no one else would notice. Unless you watched all the Alien movies.

Sounds cool, will have to watch it. I remember seeing the first Alien in 1980, and thinking it was amazing. It would be good to see an other good version of the story.

I enjoyed it when it was carving its own path in the franchise but whenever it does a "Say the Line Bart" moment (quite literally that one time) I wasn't. Problem was it kept telling Bart to say the line

Great review, the director has a clear love for the first two films and has crafted a very enjoyable entry in the franchise, but I have to admit I just didn’t like the ending, but the journey to that end was well conceived, i’ll Definitely watch it again.

I liked Romulus. Its a rehash, but it works. The guy who played the android was amazing. It could have had better pacing to build tension and so we could slowly know the characters more.

I wanted about 15 more minutes of world/character building in the beginning and cutting back a lil on the “almost endings” in the 3rd act where you think it’s gonna wrap up but they kept dragging it.

Did like it, and would have wanted to see more of the society it's placed in, the group working itself free from the company's grip, and have the alien only pop up later as an effect. Overall, the story shared the same beats as Ressurection, which I had more fun with, but it wasn't bad.

Well I have found a new favorite reviewer. I have to say the first third on the colony was pretty interesting. That was the moment when they could've easily deveoloped the characters but they didn't. I didn't care about any of the characters dying. I didn't really know any of them

3 times watching in the theater so far hahaha 🍿👽🫶 Super fun, and maybe the 4th best of the series 🎬 I would still put the original trilogy first, and then add in alien Romulus 🤘💯 (did not like the end of the movie as I'm not a huge fan of the prequel black goo hybrid newborn, mashed potato alien Resurrection final monster, etc.. Lol) Prometheus if you want to get super weird? AVP part 1 if you just want to see some cool alien versus predator action... Other than that,, don't watch any others 🙏

went to see it yesterday - I enjoyed it. It does try to do too much tho, and has too many homages/cameos etc. On the whole a fun experience tho. in regards to prometheus - its genuinely good if you watch it as if it were a B-movie.

I just wish the filmmaker didn't have a fanboy mindset who wanted to cram as many arbitrary fan service moments into the film as possible. Because the film was well-made, the acting was good.

Having seen the original Alien in 79 when it was released and all the subsequent releases,this was one of the better one's,and I ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would,certainly more than Prometheus and Covenant.

The main problem for me is the characters. I didn't care about any of them. They needed more character development. Also, they were hard to understand in parts. The background music was louder than them.

hey I enjoyed it! I thought it was great fun and I liked the callbacks. Although I guess I ignore some of the bits that I don't like as much. And now for some controversial thoughts because why not - so they had some great ideas, they thought of things to try that other Alien movies would never try, I won't spoil it by giving examples, this movie seemed smarter. It was like a Japanese anime. For those who don't know, anime is always better written than western stories. In anime they take the material seriously and they will come up with turns in the story that are properly rooted in the subject or source material 🙂

Esthetic a music was there. I fully agree with you that Andy was by far the best character, beautifully played. The rest of the cast is all right. Overall the I was entertained, though I had a feeling that I was watching reworked "the best of" Alien - Alien IV with re-used dialogue.

I liked it as a whole, but there were some creative decisions I strongly disagreed with. I did like how they scaled back the cast to a smaller group because from Alien 3 onwards, there were too many nameless characters just there to be picked off. I liked these characters.. Its not without its problems, but I think its worth watching.

The simpler the concept, the better the Alien. This was probably my favorite since the Assembly Cut of Alien 3 if not Aliens. Would've enjoyed it even more if they didn't start tying it to other movies in the franchise. Just a few Easter eggs here and there would've been perfectly fine.
